Re: Had Martins again but no breeding. Looking for some advice

Hi All, Looking for some advice if possible. This was our second year having gourds out, and again we had Martins visiting. I couldn't ID whether this years were male or female, but they were Martins and the song is obviously not mistakable. Over a 2 day span we had a pair messing around popping in...

Re: Too Late for ASY Male in Central Illinois?

I had to move my housing this spring. The farm the housing was on was sold. I was fortunate that we had land less than 1/4 mile away on a pond. I was concerned, because there is timber around and I knew owls were around but my housing has the deeper nesting cavities. I had 15 pairs, then I had racc...

Re: Can a PM be too big for crescent hole?

maddaug, Have you checked the height of the crescent entrances on the S&K door? I learned from Emil Pampell and John Miller that the height of any SREH needs to be checked with a Go/NoGo gage to confirm that the height is within acceptable limits. There are many posts about making one of these Go/N...

Re: Can a PM be too big for crescent hole?

Our Starling and HOSP are really low and they do not seem to care about our house and gourds. Some males were taken care of earlier in the year.

We will do a wait and see. Someone else suggested some traction tape which we may try first.

Thanks for your input!!

Can a PM be too big for crescent hole?

We have one pair sitting on eggs in our gourds and another pair that are SY staying at our house. The female has a terrible time squeezing in and out the crescent hole of the S&K house. We did notice she has one foot that has something going on with it. She is otherwise in great shape. It is painful...

Re: Would appreciate some coaching, New at this.

Don't put the eggshells on the porches or in the gourds. That could attract pests and you don't want that. I feed eggshells in a bare dirt spot in my garden. You can also use a raised platform 4' high or so. Brad could you elaborate on the pest statement? I would think if the eggshells were cleaned...

Re: New Colony question

Update, we aren't sure our pair have been staying overnight anymore which worries us. I am usually up about 4-4:30am everyday and watch for them to come out of their gourd. The evenings we haven't noticed them either. We also feel throughout the day we see them somewhat less. We do know they are try...

Re: New Colony question

Thank you for your insights. We watch these two obsessively and will be crushed if they would leave! We for sure have some SY in the area but can't tell if they are male or female at this point. We saw the male ASY come in tonight like a rocket and into the Troyer Horizontal Conley II he went. We di...

New Colony question

Good afternoon, this is our 2nd year trying to start a colony. We had lots of interest last year and now this year we've had a committed couple. We have an ASY couple that have been here since May 7 staying overnight coming and going all day bringing back 2 Sy martins most days (this morning a ASY m...
