Indiana late evening action

We are located in northern Indiana, near Plymouth, and every evening now for a couple weeks starting at about 8:30 ish the Martins start returning home. Slowly their numbers grow as they swarm around. They'll land and take off flying in large circles and then eventually start landing for the night a...

Re: Vent holes

I just had my first jumper a few minutes ago, most likely due to this relentless hot spell. Glad you were able to get the one back in the right home! I actually asked this question to Andy Troyer. He claimed that in the northeast, drilling the vents on his gourds is all that is needed. I doubt this...

Re: Vent holes

Anyhow, due to my concerns with this heat I drilled six 1/4" holes in the upper neck of the gourd on Sunday. I planned to plug these once rain was forecasted. Are holes this size doing anything? Any other suggestions for me to try in a pinch? The forecast cools a bit this weekend then back to 90s a...

Re: Vent holes

I would think at 2 weeks or younger missing young are from a predator or SY male. I would only guess a male, I've never seen any predator come close. I do have the guard on, no large trees anywhere near, and no bushes. It's just strange, I figured I'd find something in the grass, any remains, but n...

Re: Vent holes

I'm in the south and mine are drilled out. One thing is for sure it couldn't hurt and at 90 degrees it would certainly help with some air exchange in the gourd. You could always use some white caulk or silicone to seal them back up if the need arises. Thank you, I appreciate the response. Another r...

Vent holes

For those who have added vents into your gourds. I am debating on adding some but unsure if we need them, we have the Troyer vertical gourds. I am asking this because our last nest check we lost 3 hatchlings, not from the same gourd, 3 different, their body's were not in the gourd either and we did ...

Re: Too Late?

I appreciate the encouragement. I do have a box that plays a morning song starting at sunrise and for about four hours. I also have two decoys on the house. Martins circle overhead but I never get any takers. Iā€™m location challenged with trees, so I have the pole attached to the second floor of my ...

Re: Too Late?

June 8th was the last pair we had last year, however, and this might have possibly been a pair laying a second clutch, but June 25th another pair arrived and laid 5 eggs, all hatched.

Re: Too Late?

I wouldn't. I live in Northern Indiana and if I remember correctly, I can verify it when I get home. But I remember new pairs coming to the beginning part of June.

Territorially

So this is our second year with Martins, and our luck continues from last year, from 10 pairs, to over 30 Martin's now, hard to really count with the constant flying. One thing I've noticed is with a larger colony they've become much more aggressive with their territory. I first noticed when the adu...

Darn cold air!

I was looking forward to a much earlier arrival this year in northern Indiana, then came snow last week and they stopped their northward march at Indianapolis! Now I get to watch the scout map in envy as they're heading north around me šŸ˜ hopefully after next week, the long-range forecast shows tempe...

Re: My 12 Unit Deluxe Gourd Rack Won't Go All the Way Up

Would you be able to post some pictures of your setup? Maybe close-ups of your crank assembly, the whole thing and the top of the post as well. Somebody might be able to see something that you might be missing. Hopefully we can get resolved!

Re: Cool picture I took. Add yours.

2nd and last attempt To add to what else was stated to you, I was having the same issue for a long time posting pictures. I always had to crop the heck out of something too get it to a small enough size, but at that point instead of seeing an entire bird all that was left was a beak šŸ˜’ I did some re...

Re: Cool picture I took. Add yours.

Very nice! I love taking night pictures. This is with my Pixel 4xl using it's astrophotography mode. This is a 4-minute picture. when I took this I did not even notice it in the sky at the time, but if you look above the left hand side of my shed you can see a string of lights. I accidentally caught...

Re: Strengthening Pole

I did the same thing to my 3 section pole last month. It was swaying like a palm tree. I taught my son, who is 14, to weld not long ago so here he is doing it for me. He's pretty smart. He knew welding galvanized metal was dangerous so he ground off the coating with a 60 grit sand piper wheel befor...

Re: Strengthening Pole

Just adding to a topic I started last year. I had got around to finally strengthening my k-24. I brought it to a local welder and had the two 8-ft sections welded the together. I grinded down the welds a little bit so the system could pass over as I raised and lowered it. Once I slid it back over th...
