Re: I'm sleepy

Glad you had success. It is funny watching the fledglings even the wind gives them issues when perching that first day. They sure figure it out quick

Re: Did I mess up?

Not at all. They are likely off feeding and will be back at nest building tomorrow.

Re: Jumpers

Yes I think another 5-7 days and they would be fledging. These are too young easily noticed by the short tails. The ones I find dead are slightly smaller as if they couldn’t compete and then some gourds they are piling up on the porches (no panting) as if they are so hungry they are getting desperat...

Re: Jumpers

Troyer gourds all vented. We are in the lower 80s this week from this odd pressure system. I don't think it is heat there are young in almost every nest dead. They are weightless with a sharp keel bone. Ready for the season to be over.

Jumpers

I am finding jumpers daily. I just can’t keep up most are very weak and just sleepy. I have treated mites but between the lack of rain and the three crazy windy days we had this week I don’t think the parents can keep up. Any one else in FL having issues? Once they hit the ground no one feeds them. ...

Re: Today’s nest check

I always assume that martins up North get to business so much faster. Here they arrive and it’s a few months before they even start to build nests sometimes.

Re: Transplanting Martins from one colony to a new one

There has been documented cases where mated pairs with young were captured in gourds and transplanted to another location and the adult pair even leave when they have young, So even the parental responsibility is not strong enough to make them stay. Federal law also prohibits this practice. I too h...

Re: Transplanting Martins from one colony to a new one

Capture a pair of martins and release them at another site. They’ll fly up and never be seen there again. If you’re luckily they’ll return to where you captured them.

Today’s nest check

Everything from newly hatched to soon to fledge. I didn’t have time to check all the gourds and houses but here are some photos of nests for those who are interested. So far I have not found any mites.

Re: Help with house design

Great looking house. As stated by Kegger deeper compartments are more attractive to martins, but I see you have gourds too. I would just keep trying are you playing dawnsong?

Re: Colony Recovery After Owl Attacks

I had a colony of 30 gourds all occupied with nests in 2020 at a commercial property this was a 3 year old colony. I cleaned them out and upgraded for 2021 and not a single bird returned this year. I am in FL so they would have all been here by now. Last year I noticed less activity and put up netti...

Re: Qestion

From the studies done it appears that birds that nest farther North start migrating later then southern nesting birds. Once they go they cover ground pretty quickly but bad weather can clearly slow them down.

Check out this GPS study if you haven’t already.
