Re: TO PLAY OR NOT
My opinion will be continue to play until you get 8 or 10 birds by then they’ll do the work for you. I know everybody talks about the dawn song that the birds do early in the morning but I have never witnessed it at my colony. I’ve been out early in the mornings and never hear a peep out of mine. M...

Re: TO PLAY OR NOT
Keep it playing! It can’t and won’t hurt. It will draw birds in while your pair is off feeding. Your pair will also draw in new birds. Once you have a handful of birds you likely won’t need it anymore.

Re: BO11 plus with clinger entrances
Can’t go wrong with a clinger or crescent. Conley II is for sure the easiest of three for them to use I would say but as you found some starlings figure it out.

Re: Illuminating a scarecrow to ward off owls.
From a previous postdaveh wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 9:45 amI've done motion detector lights on top of poles, scarecrows, bird spikes, radio noise, flood lights shining on the houses and gourds, and wire cages. Nothing works well for me. Barred owls are usually the problem but last season it was the great horned owl.

I have clinger entrances and they fit no problem. That bird is just being shy give him some time.

If you have an asy returning you have a very high chance of at least getting him to find a mate and nest.

Re: New hopeful landlord
If they spend the night consistently they have chosen your site and will nest. Keep them safe from sparrows, starlings, and snakes and you're sure to be successful. They'll also attract more martins to your site as the season progresses.

Looking good except those round holes.
The day a starling shows up you’ll be as surprised as I was. Never saw a starling out here ever then one day two land on the gourd rack I was in shock. I see you have the simple plug and switch tunnels so you’re all prepared. Enjoy the birds!

Sounds like you’re off to a great start this season. Those modifications will surely lead to an even more attractive successful colony. Best of luck to you and the birds!

Re: Starling resistant hole
How long do the Purple Martins stay? Is it too late for them to make a nest now? They stay at your site until a week or two after the young fledge then they begin to join migrating flocks and start heading South. I have had martins with babies in July. So I would say you have a few more months. Wor...

Maybe your birds are just running late. I do not think you expanding and upgrading would scare them off.

Re: Is It Unusual For ASY Males To Pair With SY Females
They usually pair with the first females that arrive, but will pair with a SY female if they haven't found a mate. They always will get a SY female it is the SY males who really have the uphill battle getting a female. A lot of new colonies will have the one SY male working hard but fail to get a fe...
