Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

I use a cheap pump up Crosman rifle with a 3-9 x 40 scope on it. The most important thing I can recommend is pacing off the distance you plan to be shooting from and then set up a practice target and practice getting your scope set up and then shooting until you can hit a golf ball sized target with...

Re: Winter sparrows

I leave them alone during the winter. Winter is hard up here so i cut them some slack. Removed 100 during the season last summer though.

Re: MITES! I had no idea!

Thanks all for the advice. The old Sevin dust I found did the trick. It has been one week since I noticed the mite infestation and put Sevin in the nest boxes and todays nest checks showed zero mites. That stuff sure did the trick!

Re: MITES! I had no idea!

Turns out my wife had an old bottle of Sevin powder that was given to her years ago in the garden shed. I put some into the nests and cleaned the exterior off using a spray bottle filled with hot water and some dish detergent. I will check in a couple of days to see if it was effective. How long sho...

Re: MITES! I had no idea!

It looks like Sevin (carbryl?) is not available in Canada.
Are there any other good options for dusting the nesting material?

MITES! I had no idea!

I did a nest check today and the houses are swarming with mites. They are everywhere and got all over me. I needed to wash my clothes and take a shower. Can the mites infect humans?? I a only a second year landlord. Did not notice many mites last year and did not plan on intervening at all. But this...

Re: Here is my set up that has martins thriving in a small residential yard.

I won't be adding any more housing, I figure 16 nests is plenty for a small yard. They are pretty noisy at times and poop all over the place and I don't want to have upset neighbors. I'm sure not everybody appreciates them as much as we do. I partially monitor and intervene. I open up the houses onc...

Re: Here is my set up that has martins thriving in a small residential yard.

There are 5 pair in one house and 4 in the other so they seem to not prefer one over the other. They do like the power lines and perch on them quite a bit. As far as sparrows, I shoot the odd one with a pellet rifle but I get most of them with a repeating trap I made. 55 of them have been removed th...

Here is my set up that has martins thriving in a small residential yard.

Our first attempt was last year and we had 4 pairs. This year there are 9 pairs. Hopefully next year we will have more (there are 16 nest trays total) Currently 21 eggs and 17 hatch-lings (Canada so they are well behind the southern birds) The houses are at each back corner of the yard about 11 ft h...

Re: Dealing with neighbors while trapping sparrows

I purchased a pellet rifle last year for the same reason. Today I shot a male HOSP that was raising hell with the Martins and now peace has returned to the back yard. This HOSP would not go anywhere near my repeating trap so the gun was necessary. My advice is to watch some you-tube videos to learn ...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

I have counted 12 Martins hanging around now. It could be a good year if this keeps up. And the weather has finally turned for the better with many warm days forecast. They seem to really like the large porches and almost always choose them over the perches. The sparrows have been plentiful. A pair ...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

Fuzzmeister, we seem to have a single male who showed up day one and perhaps two pairs staying here so far. No nesting activity yet. Probably as it is cold and not much to eat. It is hard to be sure how many permanent birds we have as they tend to disappear all day. Sometimes there are none here, so...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

Just read this review on TripAdvisor: "After a long trip we stayed a night at I-Carumba's Inn. What a great place! Clean, modern and roomy. No annoying Sparrows to contend with. Highly Recommended!! However, we continued our journey north and then tried out Fuzzmeister's B&B. Well there was no bed a...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

Fuzzmeister, I am waiting for a report on the quality of your accommodations from the 3 martins I sent your way a week ago before I send more. I have a reputation to uphold! Emil you are correct it is all 3/4" The holes are 3" wide by 1 3/16" tall (exactly) I radiused both sides of the opening with ...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

It stormed here bad all day Sunday. Got about 10" of blowing snow. -10 degrees C. The Martins disappeared for about 24 hours. I opened the houses to clean the snow out of the compartments and check for any dead birds. There were none. As I was cleaning out the snow several Martins showed up and then...

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

UPDATE: Houses have been up for just over a week. One lonely male has stuck around since day one but there have been no single females for him to chirp at. Three asy male/female pairs stayed a night or two but moved on. Today there is a lot of action with about 5 asy males and 3 females. Got cold we...

Re: Best way to dispatch a sparrow?

I use an empty peanut butter jar with a couple inches of water in it.
Hold them in there under water for about 10 seconds.
No blood and no smelly ether.

Fuzzmeister, you will be happy to know that 3 of the 4 Martins that were here overnight left today. I think they were heading your way.
I did not do a scout report.

Re: Hello all. New member. Here are the houses I made.

That didn't take long! I put the houses up today after work at 6 pm and 2 hrs later there were 3 Martins on one house and one bird on the other. Not sure if they are here to stay or just passing through but it was neat to see them again. I was going to wait until May but glad we put them up early.
