Re: Purple Martin News From Northwest Louisiana

Steve, Why do you have 2 gourds down low by the snake netting on most of your poles? Thanks, Doug

Re: Anyone help with IDing this house

Hey, I disassembled the Coats 3 story and have a few question. When cutting out the 3" hole connecting the 2 cavities, should the bottom arc be level with the floor or have a step up? If up, how high from the floor? Should I have a removable base insert of some sort or just pine straw on the galvani...

Re: Purple Martin News From Northwest Louisiana

Steve, I enjoyed all the information about your colony. Lots to think about, some things can be thwarted and some are in the hands of nature. Your martins are very lucky to have you. Thanks.

P.S. great pics always a plus! Doug

Re: Vent holes

I talked with a lady a Troyer and she recommended stuffing the elbows with cotton balls when cool/normal and remove in heat. Today it is 94 degrees and 99 inside the gourd.

Re: Anyone help with IDing this house

I think I found it...Coates 3 story. If some of the smaller holes are where someone shot through the aluminum metal, I carefully bend back the edges of the hole and close the holes. Mark, it looks like paint drops so much easier fix! Thanks much for the great info, Doug Just witnessed a house wren a...

Re: Would anyone like to help?

Thanks all,

FYI, yesterday I removed an empty horizontal gourd, drilled and added elbows. With no nesting material, the outside temp was 92 degrees and the inside of gourd was 98.......later in the day the temp dropped to 88 and the inside of the gourd was 83.

Re: Anyone help with IDing this house

Hey Mark, can you explain the side by side modification? You know your stuff because it has the steel nuts an bolts. It's my first year with 2 nesting SY pair and would like to attract more next year. I will fix it up with the hope of more housing options=more nesting pairs. My concern would be the ...

Anyone help with IDing this house

We took a drive to southern Ohio and saw a driveway blower and a bunch of other stuff at the curb. I turned around ask them how much they wanted for the blower and they said everything is free. So, I gab this house also thinking it could be converted into a HOSP trap. Is it worth fixing up and modif...

Re: Tried universal deluxe in box sparrow trap...but

I had to resort to shooting after the trapping failed miserably. Not sure if that is an option, but bought a CZ 457 with a scope and they are gone. I had a gourd trap that was just like you said, instal and they just moved to the next compartment. They are pretty smart birds for sure. Good luck

Re: Would anyone like to help?

Earl, not sure how to "insert l" into a link? Tried searching "extreme heat" under "topic" without good results. Thanks.

Would it be ok to remove an empty gourd and put in the 2 venting elbows and swap gourds with a new nest? Is it bad to lower the rack in this heat 3x in two days? Thanks

Re: Would anyone like to help?

I did a nest check today and the 4 babies were spread out as far away from each other as possible. I installed a 3/4" elbow on the lid and was worried about the chemical smell of the silicon. I guess everything is ok & Ma & Pa are back to feeding. Forecasting another week of 90+ degrees..........arg...

Would anyone like to help?

Hi, we are expected 90+ degree days and it's my first time with pinkies. Any advice on venting a Troyer gourd, mine are horizontals, if that matters. Not sure what size and all required in mounting Do you think I can lower my rack and take a lid off a gourd that is not being used and modify the cap ...

I would think that the best salesmanship would come unscripted & directly from the person with the passion. I would consider many things beyond my niche if I felt the person truly wanted it.
