Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

Ryan, I felt bad for you so I sent you one of my subbies, a couple of ladies are on there way. Lake Ontario is just a mud puddle to a martin compared to the journey the have to take every year. Best of luck!

Re: Attack of the Western KingBird !!

I'm having the same problem, the king bird is attacking the martins on the houses over and over while they are trying to bring nesting material into their compartments.

Re: Starlings are discouraging us

Early this spring I also was getting frustrated. I had an old pump up .22 cal Sheridan pellet gun with open sights and I just couldn't hit the starlings off the martin houses. So I found an old surveyors tripod from around the 1970's that had knobs for every angle and elevation imaginable and was ro...

Re: A Promising Start Pt. 2

While on the nest material subject, Can someone tell me why my adults are removing all the nesting material I've placed in the back of the compartments of my T14's? I've been using some kind of dried long grass that was growing on the edge of the pond that that I shaped into a bowl shape. I have lot...

Re: What to expect?

Sounds like your a landlord! The Adult will hold his own and one of these days you will see a few more birds that hopefully that SY will find another SY female and they all will come back next year. I've helped my dad with his martins for over 30 years but just started my own colony last year and wa...

Re: Tree swallows

Tree swallows can be a pain in the neck when trying to establish a colony but just today I was outside working and was getting tore up by black flies thankfully there were dozens of tree swallows annihilating them close to the ground with my Martins up higher after probably something else. I thinkin...

Re: Training a new colony. Upper level low.

I also had the same three days of low 40's and drizzle all day and was getting worried. I tried using scrambled eggs and a plastic spoon but was only able to get one male that was returning to the house to take it once. They all flinched like they were ready to take flight but they just didn't. I br...

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

That I'm not sure of but it will most likely keep coming back. If it were me I would raise your winch a few feet and find some stainless stove pipe. and they are so smart you probably won't even be ale to catch it in a have a heart trap. A small muskrat trap covered with crinkled wax paper to cover ...

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

They are smart and agile with long skinny bodies, I was thinking the netting might not be such a good idea, they can use it for footing and if the bucket is split and has a seem they might get past it.

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

I'm also also thinking weasel, your winch is low and it could easily use the cable and climb over using the extra compartment you have on the bottom of your T14. The bucket should work. So sorry.

Being a landlord.

When I was a kid in the early 70's I helped may father build our first Martin house from a popular mechanics do it yourself catalog. We put the house up and sure enough in a few days we started getting these noisy but kind of pretty birds that I've never seen before. Every year early in the spring w...

Re: Question on intruder nest

Mona,
I can only guess, If it were a house sparrow almost the entire compartment would be full of nest material. A tree swallow would be much smaller and more of a nest shape.

Why is N.Y. so sparse?

I keep looking at the scout arrival study data and can't help but notice that the state I live in is sparse compared to the other states. Is it because its not in a fly way, geography of the state, or lack of interest? I know, TAXES! I drive around and notice martins houses here and there but know t...

Re: Need help adults dying!

Do you see any trauma on the birds or feathers inside the gourdes? I'm wondering if the Martins can't get out. If possible take pictures of the entrances from inside facing out,if you have a lid. If not just the outside. I have also seen starlings breaching my Troyer gourdes with crescent SREH's thi...

Re: Why do I not have martins

If you are just starting a colony this year you most likely won't until the Sub adults, last years hatchlings arrive. For you is could be the end of May or even June. You also need a good location such as open flyways, away from trees and hedge rows were hawks could be lurking, close to human activi...

Re: Tree swallows in Southern Indiana

It's not too late, I just got my scouts last week feeding along side several tree swallows. Last year was my first year starting a colony in Upstate NY with two pairs of adult martins Mid June and on June 28th we had 10 eggs. My personal experience was all my gourdes had tree swallow nests and the e...

Re: So upset!

Don't get upset, get mad! They will come back. My martins didn't get here yet but I've been dealing with a group of starlings. As soon as I open the house door they flew off. After about 5 times I finally had it and put a mouse trap on the hole they were using, two minutes problem solved. I don't sug...

Re: Think I have decided to build another T14

I decided to go with red trim paint on this one. My other is blue so I figured I would give something different a try. Plus red white and blue never hurts in my neck of the woods.... flyin-lowe, Really nice house, Love it when people show what they build. For some of us that like to make our houses...
