Re: Need answers

I wouldn't worry too much. I had one cavity that lagged more than 2 weeks beyond the rest this year. The parents kept feeding until yesterday, when there was a small party and the fledgelings left the nest. It was kind of weird. 12/14 cavities had nests this year, and 11 of them fledged all at once ...

Thanks for the advice, all. Option 4 it is. A trap has been ordered.

Nest check reveals 7 nests with green leaves, but no eggs yet.

Random HOSP thoughts.

We have a single T-14, and have recently acquired a pair of HOSPs. Eleven of the other cavities have breeding pairs of PMs, so we are doing OK. There is even interest in the other 3 cavities, including the one the HOSPs are interested in. We had the same problem last year (same cavity, too). I bough...

Re: Pool owners

I have a 30x14 semi-in-ground pool about 25 ft from my T-14. The pool deck is about 4' off the ground. So we can actually get fairly close to the house. Our presence does not disturb the birds, though sometime they will fly off when we walk by the house. They don't drink from the pool, but we have a...

I use a 3" decking screw, straight through the body of the decoy and into any wooden surface.

First successful year

This purple martin business is one learning experience after another. Last year was bad - a snake ate all my eggs, despite having netting up. The problem, I think, was a less than wonderful job putting up the netting. This year I used a Troyer predator guard, which has so far met the need. As of las...

Yet another TS post

If I ever say tree swallows are cute again, shoot me. Last year I had a brief TS invasion, but they soon left and were replaced by PMs. I thought this year might be similar. Wrong. This year, a trio of TSs have occupied my T-14. I gave them a few days to leave, but then noticed nesting behavior, cop...

Re: Tree swallows arrive in New Concord,oh

One of my guilty confessions is that I really like tree swallows. They can be incredibly cute, and goofy. They usually try to nest in my bluebird houses and are comical in their efforts. Last fall before migration we had a murmuration right over our house - there were maybe a thousand birds, and the...

Re: Bummer!

Oh no - that's really too bad. Did the parents stick around, tho? I had between 6-8 regular birds and several partial nests beyond the single clutch. About all I see today is the SY male who had been nesting. At least I think it's him from the call. Who knows, they might all come back, but for now ...

That’s bad news, sorry. How big around was your bird netting around your pole?
Um. Well, clearly not big enough. Probably a foot or so on each side.

Bummer!

So, today's nest check revealed that all my eggs were missing. (One clutch of 4 eggs in a T14 house.) No shell bits. Nest intact. I'm assuming that a snake got past my bird-netting predator guard. The eggs were at the very back of the cavity, so I reckon that any critter other than a snake would hav...

Update - with eggs

Hi, y'all, So, the most recent nest check revealed one cavity with 5 eggs in a well made nest (not pretty, but good enough so that eggs will stay in it!). There was a second cavity, immediately below, with a broken egg and a thin, partial nest. I think the female from the above nest accidentally mis...

Well... that was interesting!

Yesterday, I'm sitting around the pool. My PM house is about 40 ft away. All of a sudden, our local peregrine falcon swoops down and lands on the perch causing much excitement! (The alarm call is now indelibly lodged in my noggin!). I jumped up and started flapping my arms. Mr. Falcon glared at me, ...

Re: Newbie - Third Post

Sounds/looks to me like your colony is already started! However, most of us refuse to say we're a landlord until we've seen eggs and maybe even babies fledged. I am wondering if you put in some pine needles/straw? PMs are notoriously terrible nest builders and they do seem to appreciate a little he...

In my case a half dozen tree swallows came and left after 2-3 days. They briefly occupied one of my bluebird houses, too. If they don't leave on their own you might want to take the house down and remove any nesting materials. I found they weren't very persistent.

Newbie - Third Post

OK, so this will be my last "newbie" post. Either I'll be a landlord or not. Previous posts describe my T-14 and placement. Since mid-May we've had consistent visitors. I'm not experienced enough to tell SY from ASY males and females, except for the one very enthusiastic male who sings, dances and d...

Re: Newbie - Second Post

what about ponds, streams, etc? You can make a baffle with lots of material...definitely want that bird netting. No. The outer banks are basically a sand bar between the ocean and the sound. There are some brackish ponds a few miles away, but nothing close. I'm thinking of making a baffle out of a ...
