Re: Tree Swallows in Housing

Well the Tree Swallows took to the alternate gourd like fish to water. They were in it the next day. All PM cavities have been closed for 5 days now. I've had the Dawnsong CD running for 6 weeks dawn to dusk and still no sign of PMs. They're probably coming by during the day when no one sees them, b...

Re: Tree Swallows in Housing

Thanks so much for pointing me to the TS protocol. I have an extra gourd in the way and plan to put it on a shepherd hook. All 24 of my cavities are now closed until we see some PMs. The TS pair are none too happy and now spend all day looking for open gourds. It’s a little tough to comprehend the T...

Tree Swallows in Housing

We’ve had a pair of tree swallows (actually 3 of them) hanging around the Martin housing all week. Still no sign of Martins other than a few flyovers during the past few weeks. Last year out pair of Martins moved in April 29 (next Monday). We have 24 cavities up this year. 12 gourds and 12 in barns....

Re: When to expect nest building?

Joe - Don't forget to put a little pine straw in the cavities. Last year mine didn't add much of anything to the pine straw other than a few leaves.

First Sighting and Scout Arrival study

Spotted our first Martins of the year in Middle TN this morning about 9:30am. Three birds together circled the housing a couple times taking a good look, then flew off. I’ve had Dawn Somg playing for 4 days now in the mornings until about 10am. Question - The first sightings in this area on the Scou...

Re: 2nd year noobie needs an opinion please

Chad, I finally got my first pair last year - I also have the S&K barn and six B09 gourds under it on an S&K rack. Here a couple observations from last year: - The martins went straight for the gourd. The rarely / never looked at the barn - I expanded the cavities in the barn (6 cavities total). I s...

Re: Sightings map & Song player

I’m in Midddle TN just south of Nashville. Last year we had our first ever pair and 5 fledglings. I started Dawnsong on April 24, saw the first Martins on April 26, and had an ASY pair going into a gourd on April 29. You still have plenty of time. Get your Dawnsong going around April 1, put some pin...

Ed - Did you open the link to the closeup picture? (It would only post a link to that 2nd picture for some reason)

Re: Holy cow!

Wow - Congratulations! Couple questions; - How many total cavities did you have available this year? - Gourds or Houses & which are occupied this year? - What did you do to prep your cavities? (pine straw, mud, etc.) - Where is your housing in relation to human activity? - Do you think your fledglin...

Re: Parasites?

Can you look at one under a magnifying glass? I suppose I could take the chick out and get a better picture. It almost looks like a scab - like it had been scratched - the spots are tiny. Seed ticks would seem odd - how would they get up there considering the adults don't spend time on the ground? ...

Not sure why the closeup image (5_days_CU4) won't show up / says "Not downloaded yet'. Is it too large maybe?

Parasites?

I did a nest check yesterday evening - 5 healthy looking chicks between 4 and 6 days old. Our single ASY pair appears to be doing a good job. When I looked closer at the pictures, I noticed what looks to be tiny parasites on the chest and leg of one chick. Anyone know what this is and is it somethin...

Re: about 1 more week of hope for me.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but has anyone documented the ideal placement of Martin housing in relationship to humans? I’ve been more observant this year, and notice a lot of vacant Martin houses way out in the middle of a field or under a big tree, etc. The active colonies I’ve seen are in open ...

Re: SY pair visited today

I’m a first timer too, so I’ve been watching very closely this year (we have 1 pair - with 5 chicks). I don’t know about how overnighters act in a big colony, but with our single pair they’re in super stealth mode in the evenings. You never know they’re in unless you see them. No noise, no commotion...

Re: Introduction and First Success

Proud New Parents - 2 hatched! (as of May 31) 3 eggs to go... Went ahead and added the tunnel / porch yesterday evening about 2 hours before sunset. Took almost an hour for the ASY Female to go inside after landing on the porch, looking inside, flying off about 20 times. The ASY Male seemed i...

Hi JH -

I’m southeast of Nashville. One of my best friends lives on Hinds Creek Rd. (You’ll understand what that means). You live in one of the greatest places in earth.

Congratulations on your summer residents. Good luck to us both. I should have hatchlings today or tomorrow!

Added Porches

Added 2 of the 3 tunnel / porches that I got for the Bo9s. I used a pen knife to cut out the crescent plate on the front of the gourd - wansn't difficult at all. One porch is on either side of the occupied gourd. Within 2 minutes both Martins were checking it out. They've obviously seen this setup b...

Martin House & Rainbow

The tropical storm brought some interesting weather yesterday evening. Unfortunately the pair of Martins who live here wasn't available for a portrait;
