2019 Still no martins

One thing I have learned this year is spend as much time as possible around your site, Martin's love to see you engaging with your housing. If they are flying above and see you messing with the housing/gourds they will come down and take a closer look.

Re: Natureline Entrances

I added these porches to these Oblong entrances, First year using the gourds but starlings are getting in. Is it the porches or are the oblong Entrances, maybe both?

I think next season I will add those Tunnels.

I haven't had any problems with martins getting in the S&K Clinger SREH.

Thanks

Re: Dawnsong

Is the Ideal time to play the dawn song, between the hours of 4am and 7am? Been playing it at that time but haven't seen any martins early in the morning I did see 2 Martins this past Saturday and Sunday about 10AM. Look like a ASY male and female the male going in and out and the female just perchi...

Re: Gourd seed needed

I don’t have any natural gourds left to take a picture of. I haven’t used any naturals probably in the last decade. The gourds I use to grow looked like a super gourd with a flat bottom. By all means post some pics and let me see them. I could kick myself for not being planting my seed at least eve...

Hawk attack on decoy leaves talon marks.

I heard a bunch of barn swallows squalkin yesterday. They were badgering a hawk.
a coopers hawk attacking my decoy I could hear the talons tearing at the decoy from about 60 feet away.

I think maybe what I have read about the decoy helpin save Martin's during attack makes sense.

Re: Yet another TS post

If you got pm trying to get in, I would open at least a couple because the clock is ticking. Maybe try a gourd on a shepards hook. That's what mind ts are nesting in.

Good luck.

Re: Tree swallows and blue birds working together...

Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. They are more territorial against their own species. Hopefully they will start nesting soon and be more occupied with eggs and young. They seem to be more worried about competitors when they are trying to claim a cavity. Yea the blue birds have young and ts h...

Tree swallows and blue birds working together...

I have both blue birds and tree swallows nesting within 25 feet of my 2 gourd racks. I don't have established colony still trying to get my first pair, but this morning I noticed a starling investigating the gourds and the blue birds and tree swallows went on the attack ran him off which is good. Bu...

Re: Tree Swallows in Housing

Thanks so much for pointing me to the TS protocol. I have an extra gourd in the way and plan to put it on a shepherd hook. All 24 of my cavities are now closed until we see some PMs. The TS pair are none too happy and now spend all day looking for open gourds. It’s a little tough to comprehend the ...

Re: Tree swallows in Southern Indiana

I would think you still have plenty of time to get Martin's this year, those tree swallows can be a big problem if left in the housing I'm trying now to get rid of a pair.

Maybe some more experienced people can weigh in.

Go to Chucks Page and index to the left "moving tree Swallows" I'm trying it right now with Gourds, waiting for them to start laying eggs before trying this method.

Re: New landlord survey

My third year nothing yet. Excluder II SREH. Because the past couple of years what visitors I had gave up on trying to enter the SREH's. After an interested male and female became curious yesterday, I decided to try change out one of the SREH with an original door with the round hole to make it eas...

Re: New landlord survey

Hi buckdog, I'm in north central Ohio and this will be my 4th year trying in good martin country (Amish). this year the closest I've come to a martin landing here was a week ago when an adult male landed several times looking at different openings. nothing since but it seems martins are drifting in...
