I've now seen several Subs and some have started bringing in nesting material.
Thanks Morgan,
I seen my first asy male yesterday checking out my gourds but I think he was just visiting.
I hope to see some subbies soon.

Re: McKinnon flasher does it work?

Is the McKinnon flasher the cutout of a bird, from white plastic, like a chlorox container? You hang it from the nest box and it waves and moves with the breeze. Supposed to attract TS. I used one two years ago and had a TS in that nest box. did not put it out last year and a PM nested in that same...

McKinnon flasher does it work?

I have built a tree swallow house and I have it up and ready, tree swallows have been looking but so have blue birds 🐦. I want tree swallows they cause problems with the Martin's here not the blue birds 🐦. So I seen on the tree swallow protocol that these flashers help attract them. I need to head t...

Re: Slow start this year at my palce

I also have two pair of TS. The pair in the box closest to to one of my martin poles appear to believe they are martins! They spend more time on the top perch than anywhere else, but have never messed with the gourds. They fly with the martins, and seem to get along just fine. Morgan, That so...

Re: Slow start this year at my palce

Chris I'm in ider just east of you and I don't have a established colony and today I had a few tree swallows hanging around my gourds haven't seen any Martin's here yet. Last year the tree swallows aggravated me and I shut my gourds up I'm not doing that this year. I have a house up for the tree swa...

Re: Scout Question for experienced landlords

Don’t get hung up on the term scout, that’s what the early arriving Martins are offended referred to but they are no different then any other returning Martins. As was said above they have strong site fidelity so if you have adult Martins staying at your site more then likely there was/is a problem...

If someone had asy "scouts" take to a new site early I understand they dont start nesting immediately, would they defend it from tree swallow swallows etc.

Thanks in advance

Scout Question for experienced landlords

I plan on opening a few of my gourds as soon as my established neighbor's do. Or when I hear or see martins. I know the scouts are asy Martin's, I have read that some people believe that asy Martin's will sometimes leave their previous site for a site they like better. Would anyone like to weigh in ...

Re: When to open martin house?

clivia98, how many houses do you have? How many apartments are in each house? I would only open a couple apartments in one of the houses to allow the Martins access. I would then open a couple more apartments after more Martins start to show up. I would not open all compartments this early though. ...

Re: When to open martin house?

I'm a wannabe myself but if you look on this site "purple martins/attracting/timing" it says unless you have close neighbors with a established colony wait 4 weeks after the scouts arrive to open your gourds. If your lucky and have neighbors with established colony you can open as soon as your areas...

I think the barn swallows around my place eat their share of flying insects seem to be a great benefit to have around. I wish I had more of them.

Thanks for the feedback,

Re: Natureline Entrances

Randy, its true that the gourd floors are slick. Martins will make such gourds their last choice. I have some side entrances, and I make sure that there is a ramp there so that they can get out at the steep sides real easily. I have some paint which the grit in it, going to paint inside floors up t...
