Re: Why use pine straw in your gourds?

Hi everyone, My 1st year I used straw. We get lots of rain here in SE Louisiana. The straw became wet and I even had some chicks get tangled in it. Since then I only use pine needles. They stay dry and they are firm enough to prevent wrapping around little chick's legs. This year we had a horrible f...

Re: Hurricane Ida...hope all you Louisiana landlords fairedwell.

Hi Rob and all, Everyone in recovery stage. Same with me that trees nearby were uprooted. One in particular that was a hide out for the hawks is gone. The weather today is awesome. My martin houses withstood the high winds. I had them lowered and the posts took the wind. A cable was loose on one. My...

Hurricane Ida...hope all you Louisiana landlords fairedwell.

Hi everyone. Still recovering from Hurricane Ida. I don't think anyone escaped damage. Hope all my neighbors are ok. I am lucky by the Grace of God. Had some roof damage but had a whole house generator and metal shutters. Both spared me. Finally have power but many further down the bayou do not. Won...

Re: Second year bust

My experience with a snake involved Bluebirds. The snake breached a pole guard and netting. It ate one Bluebird chick. The Bluebird chick that survived the attack was only 13 days old. The parents did not hesitate to coax that chick out from the nest. They were that fearful. The chick hopped away an...

Re: Couple First-Timer Questions about the "Aftermath"

Just to add my 2 cents. Once the martins are gone I remove the nest trays (nest and all) and take the hose and nozzle and blast out the compartment with fresh water. I then take a towel and some mild detergent and wipe down the entire house in and out. Then hose it down again. I clean each nest tray...

Re: First failed season ever....

Look up Kingston stovepipe baffle guard. Lots of posts on the forum about snake guards and baffle guards. Also information on owl and hawk guards. I forget but there is a person who wrote articles on all these predator guards. I think her first name is Kathy. Maybe other members could add informatio...

Re: First failed season ever....

Could be. Had a snake take a Bluebird chick but leave it's sibling alone. The parents would not let that chick stay. They coaxed it out even with it being only 10 days old. The snake breached the pole guard and snake netting only to get tangled in the netting on it's way down. The birds did not retu...

Mine are all gone but I think I saw a few northerners pass by on their way back to Brazil yesterday.
Sad to see them go. Until next year, here's to a successful season.

Excellent! Great story. I was moved by the poetry too. Even though I did not understand a word of it, the poetic sincerity of it's delivery was moving. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Help Young Bird in my yard

I'm not an expert. Keep it safe and warm like in a box with straw covered with ventilation. Try to feed it if you can. Crickets dipped in water/pedialyte. Place it as soon as you can in a nest with chicks that are the same age. Fewer than 5 is preferred. Do it as soon as you can. I'm not as experien...

Re: Rough Start but Good Finish

Hi Rob. Thanks for letting me know. The trendsetters I have have them on the inside of the SREH entrances but they don't always prevent wing entrapment. Was told I could thicken the entrance by adding them to the outside. After hearing what you've said though I think I'll leave it alone. I surely do...

Re: Rough Start but Good Finish

I'd say a tough year! I must have thrown in the towel at least 3 times. Year ended with 74 fledging out if 77 hatchlings. Great support from the forum kept me going. Already preparing for next year. Going to add wing entrapment protection on the outside of the entrances of my Trendsetters. Any one t...

Re: Rat snake...bluebirds.

I am soooooo excited to report that the little Bluebird chick that survived the rat snake attack and was coaxed out of it's nest by it's parents at 13 days old survived. I saw her (I think it's a female.) feeding along side mom in my back yard. Unbelievable!! I thought the worst would happen. She co...

Re: Fledgling martin wing— having trouble flying looks sprained/dislocated at elbow

I hope it's ok. I've not had that happen. If there is a rehabber near you might want to start there or your local wild life office. Here, I don't have close rehabilitators so it would be difficult for me to get help. God forbid should that happen. I wish that there were training for those who wish t...

Re: Why would they leave?

That is interesting. I don't know the answer but I can share something that happened to me last year that was similar. I had a nest of 3. It was very late in the season and all of the other martins were gone. The parents stopped feeding the chicks. Maybe occasionally I would see a parent bring food ...
