Re: Using feathers to attract HOSP to trap

Thanks Brad and Bird Brain. I'll check out the white millet tomorrow and I'll glue the feathers to a board to keep inside the trap. The sparrows are looking for nesting places now because they have been coming to the martin houses and are looking around. I've had to chase them away several times now...

Using feathers to attract HOSP to trap

Hi everyone, I have a repeating bait trap that I use to catch sparrows. Last year I caught over 100 but this year I only caught 4 so far. My neighbors don't speak to me because I trap the sparrows and they don't like that. And they added more feeders that are attracting the birds. I've read that usi...

Re: Nesting material gone from houses

Yes Bluebirds are in South Louisiana. I had a pair on my Martin perch. Soon I put up a nest box and sure enough they nested. They are building now in fact. Beautiful birds.

Re: Martins here already!

Hi. I did in Louisiana. Right now my houses are all full and have been since mid February. Last year I only had a pair at that point. Happy they're here. The cold weather is over (I hope anyway.) for us this far south. Don't know the reason. It will be interesting to see if they start nest building ...

Re: PMCA Wing Entrapment Protectors heads up....

John,
I don't fully understand. You mean to fill under the existing wing entrapment protector? And add the WEP that is sold by PMCA to the front of the entrance?

Re: PMCA Wing Entrapment Protectors heads up....

Hi everyone, I have trendsetters with the SHREH entrances and WEP attached inside the compartment but still have had wing entrapments occur. In fact, just yesterday I had one. I was home and able to release it. It appeared that 2 females where fighting inside. Any rate, the question is if I buy the ...

Does every state have a purple martin society chapter?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if every state has a purple martin chapter. I was looking for a Louisiana society but did not find one. Just wondering. Would love to be a member.

Re: first time for purple martins

Hey dkaymon, It's still early. I had my first ASY male the first year show up around this time. This year, so far, I have about 16 birds and expecting at least 32. This is my 3rd year. Good luck and be patient. If you have an open location and it's inviting I think you'll do fine. Keep us posted. Br...

Re: Nature does need man

Hi everyone, I saw the interview too. I think what he meant was that without nature we could not exist. He is an environmentalist and his message is we need to protect our natural environment. I don't use any insecticides or harsh chemicals and do every thing I can to contribute to the "save our env...

Re: Repeating sparrow traps.

I've had good luck. Last year I caught over 100 using white bread and keep a couple alive as decoys. This was in March. I set it last week and caught only 4 but one of them was a male that was visiting the martin houses all too often so it was a good catch. My neighbors, who no longer speak with me ...

Earlier arrival numbers and behavior seems to be early, too.

Hi everyone, I notice on a couple of posts that the martins seem to be arriving earlier and in larger numbers. Here, too I've seen it. Right now I have 12+ martins and last year at this time I had only a couple. But in addition, I am observing that the behavior of the martins seem to be behaviors th...

Re: Using a recorder for nest checks.

Hi, I just bought the Sony ICD-BX140 (digital voice recorder) on Amazon for 27 dollars and free shipping. I haven't used it yet. It comes with 2 AAA batteries. I only have 16 compartments/nests to check. It states that the battery life is 30 hours. I usually have a friend write down notes while I ch...

Thanks everyone. I have my decoys out. I feel better knowing that I'm not attracting the hawks by putting them out. Great information. Thanks again!

Using decoys

Hi everyone, I've heard that using decoys can actually attract hawks. I've used them before and have witnessed the hawk attack them but also noticed more hawk activity. So, do the decoys attract hawks? I just put my decoys out since I already have 10 plus martins (males and females) but was a little...

Re: Question about my new Trendsetter...

Really Dave? I thought of doing the same but noticed the mesh screen would raise my trays above the entry level making it difficult or impossible for the birds to enter. I did consult with the makers of the Trendsetters and they told me to take the screens out and replace them with the trays. Hmmm M...

As the birds are returning...

Hi everyone, As my birds are returning do you know whether they seek out the same compartment they nested in last year or do they start all over again? Right now I have half of the compartments open so that I can keep a close eye on any sparrow that might want to explore. I wouldn't want to discoura...
