Re: Purple Martin banding and more - VIDEO

Peter,
Your video story brought a tear to my eye. Please post an English translation of your poem for me: a nature-loving sentimental Irish grand-dad and ,martin land lord.
Thanks for your love and effort sustaining this amazing species.

Season Summary - 2021

Hello Everyone, Haven't seen a martin on my colony in 10 days so my season is over. Birds are hanging somewhere local eating bugs and getting ready for the flight south. So here is a summary of what happened at Mike's colony. My 54 gourds on three racks (6,24,24) produced 214 eggs, 184 hatchlings an...

My birds are gone

Good Morning, Looks like my season is over. The late nest in gourd upper 9 of rack 3 fledged its 5 young around 7/12. Had 30-40 martins hanging around my 3 racks up until that date. Have not seen a martin since. Going to leave everything in place until mid-August when I get back from my Homosassas f...

Nest Check 18

Hello everyone, Took my trusty plug to the colony today, 7/11, dropped Rack 3 and plugged Upper 9 gourd. Still 5 young. These guys are bound to fledge within this coming week. Still have 34-40 birds hanging around. Think that one gourd with the "almost fledglings" is keeping these birds around? Happ...

Re: Nest Check 17 - 7/3/21

Brent, Couple of things. Got my Ragdoll cat from a breeder in New Pt. Ritchey. He'll be 10 next month, my cat not the breeder. Just an expensive house cat; doesn't mind lightning but has a serious issue with thunder. Looks like Elsa was more trouble as it moved north but Florida did record one death...

Nest Check 17 - 7/3/21

Hello Everyone (those of you who may still be interested in my weekly nest check posts), Dropped only one rack on 7/3 and got a serious stink-eye from the 5 young in Gourd Upper 9 of rack 3. Nest check next weekend will likely show that these guys have fledged; these youngsters are that close. Hopef...

Nest Check 16 - 6/27/21

Two gourds on Rack 3 had young last week. I found on today's nest check that the 4 birds in L4 have fledged and the 5 hatchlings in U9 are doing just fine. Seems like every 5 minutes or so a parent enters U9 with a bug and departs with a fecal sac. My totals now are 163 fledged young and the 5 in U9...

Nest Check 15 - 6/20/21

Season winding down; data this week about the same as last. Rack 1 - 24 fledglings. Rack 2 - 77 fledglings. Rack 3 - 58 fledglings. Two gourds on Rack 3 still have young. The 4 young in one gourd are about to fledge and the 5 young in the other gourd are just 10 days after hatch. Keeping my fingers ...

Rack 2, 24 S&K B09s, 98 eggs, 81 hatched, 77 fledglings. Rack 3, 24 Troyer Horizontals, 80 eggs, 67 hatched, 58 fledglings. Totals thus far are 209 e...

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

Birdiegirl, An unexpected and severe storm in April that toppled my Rack #1 (a Tri-tel with 6 S&K Bo11 gourds). Had 4 very young chicks in one gourd (they all survived) and 31 eggs scattered in the other 5 gourds, all were destroyed (eggs, not gourds). After resurrecting the rack that afternoon, bir...

Desonyea, My son has a "lake house" just east of now closed HWY 11 where it hits the North Shore. He's off Carr Road. Visit from my home in Florida frequently and stay at my son's place. Eat up all the boiled seafood that I can from Kenny's on Pontchatrain Dr. Love to stop by and see your colony and...

Re: Nest Check today 6-6-21

Whippy, Good for you. I've had a good season here this year. Ending my 4th season as a first-timer and landlord. No extended rains this year and only one storm that took down one of my racks that I erected the same afternoon after the storm passed. Had one Coopers Hawk episode but it only accounted ...

Nest check #13

My stepdaughter and I dropped the 3 racks yesterday. Rack 1 has fledged 4 birds and still has 19 young in attendance. Rack 2 has produced 67 fledges with only 6 young remaining and Rack 3 has added 55 fledges with 7 young still in their gourds. Also have that one clutch of 5 eggs first observed on t...

Re: Nest Check 12 - 5/30/21

Brent, Weekly nest checks provide the answer to your questions. My checks give enough data to predict fledge dates. I check my notes before I begin my check and determine which gourds have young approaching fledge dates. Those gourds get plugged as soon as the rack is down. After my check, I raise t...

My stepdaughter and I dropped the 3 racks in my colony and here are the totals. Rack 1 (6 gourds) produced 31 eggs, 4 fledglings and has 20 chicks. Rack 2 (24 gourds) produced 97 eggs, 66 fledglings and has 10 chicks. Rack 3 (24 gourds) has produced 80 eggs, 42 fledglings and has 18 chicks. So 208 i...

Rack 3 has 23 young, 4 eggs, 2 dead young and has 13 more fledged since 5/18. Totals are 63 young, 15 eggs, 3 de...

Nest checks 9 and 10

Checked the gourds on my 3 racks on 5/11 and 5/18. Got out of my weekend sequence because I attended my grandson's graduation ceremony from LSU. Stayed in Slidell and filled up on oyster po-boys, boiled crabs, crawfish, shrimp and gumbo. Had lunch Sunday at Commanders Palace in New Orleans. Yummy! C...

Crow attack

My cycling buddy has a 3-rack colony. He noticed a crow carrying a martin. About 12 martins ganged up on the crow, forcing it toward the ground and when about 4 feet up, the crow dropped the martin. As Ken walked toward the fledgling, the crow returned and began pecking the youngster. Ken flushed th...

Re: Nest material carrying- is this a good sign?

Janell, What kind of set-up do you have (gourds, house, etc.) and when have you scheduled your first nest check? Can't start too early. Yes, martins can really "get a hold of you." Becoming a land lord (weekly nest checks, etc.) is a responsibility but being able to witness the "process" - nest buil...
