Re: Earliest Martin Colony exit ever

Same here just east of you. Normally I have some hanging around into August but there are very few if any still around. I saw about 6 this morning but they looked like fly bys trying to get the decoys to follow them. I will pull the decoys down shortly.

Re: Riverlands Audubon Center (St. Louis)

Boy, these are running late. The last of mine fledged last week. It is so hot here at the moment but should only be one more day.

Re: What to do with a jumper?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I stuffed it with crickets and egg and it seemed anxious to get moving. It would scurry around the box but never seemed to like being fed. Maybe my technique... It would swallow just fine and didn't fight too much but it definitely did not beg. I guess I don't look enou...

Re: What to do with a jumper?

Tom, thanks for the info. I think the heat had something to do with it and one of the others may have pushed it off the porch. There was another sitting there later in the day which is why I didn't want to rush things when trying to put it back. For now it is eating crickets and a little egg, anothe...

What to do with a jumper?

I had my first jumper this year after many years of maintaining housing. I don't believe I can put it back since his brothers and sisters are in waiting. I fear more will jump. Any ideas how long it will take before he's ready to fly? Should I feed it an wait it out? BTW, these things can really sti...

Re: My Favorite Gourd Rack

I bought a Gemini a couple years ago but I don't have near that many gourds. It's a great setup but a bit pricey. I needed something that was easy to raise and lower and to support gourds. I've been very happy with mine and it withstands the wind well as long as you remember to lower it a little whe...

Re: First Egg of the Year

Last night's check showed 7 eggs in this horizontal gourd. My wife wonders how they are going to feed them all. This pair is the first to start nesting and were the first to arrive. The other 6 nests have 2 to 4 in each and a couple other nests look promising. This is most martins I've ever ...

Re: Chicadee Interference

Unfortunately you need to control the sparrows. There are many ways and you can use an in-house trap or one of the Van Ert traps (https://vanerttraps.com/). They look a lot like a normal bird house but will allow you to trap them live and dispatch them without too much trouble. Relocation isn't an o...

Re: So upset!

Hi, I’m new to this forum. I would like answers if possible how to get HOSP to go in trap cages. I bought one after I found a dead PM in my one bird house and that’s last straw! And there’s a lot more to it than that. Last year they kept bluebirds from nesting. Every box I put up they immediately t...

Re: New landlord and dealing with house sparrows

What sort of house do you have? That can help determine the trapping options. I have 5 different traps that I use at various times based on the situation. I have good luck trapping sparrows since I've learned how they respond to the environment. I won't see a single sparrow for a month but as soon a...

There are several places on line to buy seed but they are not from my usual sources so I cannot vouch for the quality. A Google search for martin gourd seed brought up several.

Re: Starling ?

Dave, I had an interesting conversation with a wildlife rehabilitator near here the other day about the english house sparrow and starling. Their position is that HOSP and starlings are not really invasive any more, and they will actually rehabilitate any that are brought in after hitting a window/...

Today's nest check showed the first egg of the year for me. Now to wait for the rest over the next week or so.

Re: Starling ?

If I was in a place where I could I would definitely. A lot of people keep out traps all year too. Starlings harm more than just Martins, mostly woodpeckers. Any bird that is a cavity nester is vulnerable. House sparrows fit that class too.

Re: More leaves than last year...why?

One thing I've noticed this year that I have never seen before is the martins using the whirligigs from maple trees to line their nests. I see them in both gourds and the house. They are using the usual willow leaves too so go figure. You never know what you might see every year.

Re: Besieged by Smaller Starlings !!

The little rats showed up here today. I saw only one enter but there are others hanging around. One male is trying his best to convince some females to stay but I saw only the one who could fit in the entry. The others tried and ended up leaving. I think this bunch are newly fledged but it is hard t...

Same here... If there is a storm coming I will lower the rack 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down and I've not had any issues. I've seen it shake pretty hard but nothing that I worried too much about.

Re: Nest building and leaves

It's good to see some nest activity. The birds will do what they want so just give them options. I have a lot more nest sites than birds and even if I get one pair that's better than none. I don't have the best site but the birds do alright flying around and through the trees. Good luck!

Collecting Leaves

This morning my two martins who have been here the longest started collecting willow leaves for their nest. Things are getting serious...

I have several other pairs to follow and some still trying to figure out which gourd they want to use.
