Re: Trapping sparrows

I've had my best luck with the white chicken feathers. I normally use the flip top trap and originally just laid them in the open trap but when I started finding them in the sparrow nests I tied them down. I first used string where they could flop around and the sparrows were attracted to them but t...

Re: 2nd-3rd last post (maybe) of my first season

Mike, Try not to be too discouraged. Anything you do for the martins helps them survive another year. Some years there isn't much you can do beyond being a good landlord. This has been a crazy year for everyone and my measure has always been to do at least as well as the previous year. If you have a...

Re: Possible threat by tropical system

I've bent several poles over the years and lower my houses when storms threaten. Several feet never seemed to bother them one bit. As long as you have planted to pole correctly everything should be fine.

I'm glad you caught the pest. If there ever was a vengeful animal starlings fit the bill. Followed closely by sparrows...

Re: Nest that was not fully completed...can I add straw?

Adding a little something won't hurt, it's no different than a nest change for the martins. As for why the chick was outside the nest you don't have sparrows hanging around do you? They can make a mess of things. Starlings can too if they can reach the chicks.

Re: This season is challenging.

Wow! I have not had any dead martins but I've lost a few eggs over the years. Hopefully things will get better but what you provide is better than nothing for them. It is a lot of work and I fret over them the whole time they are visiting but when the young ones take off on their own it is all worth...

Re: Maybe on my way towards wannabe no more?

Good luck with them staying around. As for the sparrows and gourds I have had them take a look but they are more exposed to the various martin attacks since the gourds are further away from some pine trees in my neighbor's yard. The frequently sit and carry on from the pine trees and as soon as the ...

Re: Gourd Nests

Thanks for the info, everyone. I think I will place a little more nest material in the gourds once the weather clears a little. Another check of the house today found two more eggs in another nest so I have two nests in the old house. I have one more 'nice' nest and one not so nice so I hope to have...

Re: Eggs in St Louis Area

So far I have more eggs in gourds than in the house but the house has more chatter activity. I have three well defined nests and one not so nice nest in the house. I would expect eggs in at least two more nests soon. This has been about normal for past seasons and I think this is due to the house cr...

Re: seeking advice on starling/martin nests

Speaking of 'bait' I have one of the flip top traps and I've found the best bait to be the cheap white chicken feathers you can get at a craft store. That and some of the nest materials they use to make their hovel. Once you catch one it will attract others. It is common that once I catch one I will...

Re: seeking advice on starling/martin nests

It's good to hear the starlings are gone but you will need to get rid of the sparrows too. The problem is they can come and go even with the crescent openings. They can be very destructive too and will destroy eggs and chicks if not handled properly. There are a lot of posts here on how to handle th...

Re: Troyer Gourd Sparrow Traps - Do They Work?

They work very well when installed as previously explained above. I've caught several sparrows and my first starling in years this evening which saved me a lot of worry about the martins. They are worth the money and you don't have many other options with this type of gourd.

Get one and good luck.

Re: Guess who got into a trio crescent entrance but couldn't get out

Well that didn't take long. I was pouring my coffee and noticed the pair on the porch of the gourd. The female was poking her head in the opening and the male was rushing her. Too bad I didn't catch them both... This one seemed smaller than normal but still incredibly strong. You really need to keep...

Re: Eggs in St Louis Area

Thanks... No, I've had them for many years. When I lived in Florida on the upper Gulf coast 20 years ago I inherited a box from the neighbor when a hurricane blew it down. I fixed it up and put it back up. I always had a full house and need to find the picture of the swarm passing through. There was...

Re: Guess who got into a trio crescent entrance but couldn't get out

This must be a trend... Tonight when I got home I noticed a starling hanging around the gourd rack but he didn't appear to be doing much. I have Troyer gourds with the Conley II entrances which are supposed to keep out the starlings. He tried to get into a couple but didn't get far and a few minutes...

Gourd Nests

I'm new to using gourds and although I placed nesting material (pine straw) in them the some martins have not brought much more in other than leaves and I have three where they've pushed the pine straw to the side and laid eggs directly on the bottom of the gourd. Is this normal and just young marti...

At least you caught him. Fortunately they don't harass my martins too much but they mess with the woodpeckers and flickers a lot. I can't seem to catch many.

Re: Late Martins again

Good luck in your efforts. The sparrows and starlings are a real pain to deal with but it sounds like you are on the right track. I have much better luck trapping sparrows than starlings and continue to look for a better trap for them. I'm more concerned about the local woodpeckers and flickers that...

Eggs in St Louis Area

When I did my nest check yesterday I found I finally have eggs. 2 eggs in one nest in the old box house and three between two gourds in the new Gemini rack. Lots of leaves in the other nests so I hope to find more as the days go by. This is my first year with the gourds so I'm happy they have accept...
