Re: Colony Being Destroyed

No one has mentioned flying squirrels. Everything that has been mentioned is a possible cause for the dead martins, but flying squirrels is the likely culprit. They don't need to climb up or down the pole - they can glide in from a nearby tree or utility pole, do the damage, and glide back down to t...

Trees close to PM housing

I'm hoping maybe against odds to become a PM landlord, and I have a question - Is anyone successful in attracting PMs at your site regardless of trees close by? I have trees on all sides of the housing but none closer than 45 ft to the upper part of the trees. Two sides are no closer than 75 feet an...

Re: It's in my blood (2nd year)

Still have no Martins to report in my new housing, but this morning I came out on the deck to see three of my neighbors spring calves taking turns licking that shiney new pole for my Martin gourds. What gives? I guess cows (and calves) are just curious animals, and to see something new and shiney ri...

Re: Too early? Too late?

I'm not in Oklahoma, but the situation is identical to yours here in Berea, Ky. I have yet to see or hear a Purple Martin myself. I got my houses ready about a week ago. All I've seen is Starlings who try to get inside the houses, but can't because of the SPEHs. At least I'm happy about that! It is ...

Re: It's in my blood (2nd year)

Maybe I'm missing something. I have tried to attach a photo to show who came to listen to the dawn song. DKC, your guess of a Mockingbird would make a lot of sense, since I have heard them mimic a Purple Martin - sort of. However, it was one of my neighbors black angus steers who left the rest of th...

Re: Cold Lethargic Martins perched on their racks are easy pickins for hawks unfortunately

After reading your post and others I realize that this is a bad year to try being a first-time PM landlord. I haven't even heard one of them in the whole neighborhood, let alone above my houses. As sad as it seems to me how the weather has taken its toll, I can only imagine how sad it is for you to ...

It's in my blood (2nd year)

Last year I put up my Martin house in mid-May, which was unfortunately too late, so this year I'm more than a month earlier. The weather has been unsettled, to say the least, and I haven't seen a Martin yet in the neighborhood. I've been playing the Purple Martin Dawn Song, and so far, this critter ...

It's in my blood.

My first experience with Purple Martins was from my childhood - age 5 through 10. A neighbor had a Martin house at the fence line near our house in the town of Irvine, Ky. Later we moved just a few miles away in the countryside part of the same county. At our father's bidding, my older brother Kenny...

Re: House sparrow ?

I haven't seen a House Sparrow on my place this year, which I think is odd as well, but no Martins yet either. I'm just returning to trying to attract them after giving up a few years ago, because I wasn't here during the day to ward off the Sparrows and Starlings. Now that I'm retired I can keep a ...

Re: after 15 years, no Martins this year???

I've only seen one female Purple Martin circle over our place here in Berea, KY. Something that seems out of the ordinary, though, is that Juncos (snow birds) are still here. I don't recall seeing them around this late in the spring.
