Re: Too Late?

I wouldn't. I live in Northern Indiana and if I remember correctly, I can verify it when I get home. But I remember new pairs coming to the beginning part of June. I appreciate the encouragement. I do have a box that plays a morning song starting at sunrise and for about four hours. I also have two...

Re: Too Late?

You still have time and even if you don't attract any to nest, leave your housing up until fall. New fledglings might see your housing and zone in on it to come back to next year. I appreciate the encouragement. I do have a box that plays a morning song starting at sunrise and for about four hours....

Re: Too Late?

Leave everything up. A friend near me began his colony in the later half of June several years ago. Both birds were ASY martins. They could have come from a predator attacked colony or had their colony hit by a storm. Who knows? Keep trying to attract martins. Someone else's misfortune may be your ...

Too Late?

This is my fourth year trying to attract a colony. I live in northern Illinois. Is it too late to expect any success for this year, and should I take the house down?

Re: 4th Year Trying

Just attached an aerial view. An overhead view from Google earth will indeed help. Martins like to be near human housing because they find safety in the human activity in the area. They like open flyways to help them drop down and take off to fly. Unless you have trees very close on all sides I'm gu...

Re: 4th Year Trying

Thanks. Just attached an aerial view. Hi Steven, Can you post an aerial/overhead view of your property (perhaps using Google Maps, satellite view)? It's hard to get a bearing from that one picture you posted. I have heard of one other person setting up housing like that and being successful, but hon...

4th Year Trying

We have several established colonies within a half mile to a mile of my home, but I have had no luck over the last three years. I have tried decoys, recordings of the morning song and have positioned the house as far from trees and as high as I can get it on my property. It's one that I bought as a ...

Re: Still No Takers

Id leave it up, if the martins from the other colony checked it out it may be on their radar. Id keep it up through the migration, and that because of the close proximity of the other other martins. Once they are clear of your area itll be safe to take down. Iv had experienced land lords tell me th...

Still No Takers

I posted a few weeks ago as "Third Year and No Luck", and many of you had great advice and words of encouragement. I removed the decoys I was trying and turned off the morning song I was playing. Several pairs swing by during the day from time-to-time, and there's a very active colony that lives in ...

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

No action today. The rain has FINALLY stopped and I have seen a few pairs cruising overhead, but no takers.

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

Yes. Morning and evening. We are very near Lake Michigan and a golf course which both attract a fair number of pm. There’s a very large group that lives in town about 2/3 of a mile away, in the eves of the older tile roofed buildings. So there are plenty around. Just not in my house!

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

Awesome to hear that and congrats on your success. I remain encouraged by the large number martins very near by. I have pairs that circle overhead almost daily, but they never seem to come in for a close look. I have two decoys on the house and play the morning song at all hours. Short of putting on...

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

I appreciate your reply and the idea about using a wire to hang gourds. It's probably too late for this season, but I'm going to give it a try next spring.

Re: Three Photos Of Some Of My Gourd Racks

Wow am I jealous. I've been trying for three years and still no luck. Maybe I should switch to gourds rather than the metal structure I have been trying.

I have not figured out how to insert photos into my posts? What is the secret?

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

Thanks for your reply. My options for location are really limited because of the very mature oak trees on the property...I have at least a dozen. I can't seem to get the copy-and-paste function to work in this format so I haven't been able to post a picture of my set-up. Post some pics.......I am gu...

Re: Third Year...NO Luck!

Thanks for the comments and advice, and so sorry to hear about that rat! I have been pretty aggressive in "removing" sparrows and starlings from my back yard, in general. I have eyes on the house very frequently during the day, and there are no pests at all. The several times I've taken it down to i...
