Re: Nest building began this weekend in Plano

hey whippy, try putting down tamale wrappers. Cut them into 1 inch wide 2 inch long. Martins love them. Fun to watch, got a chance to see them snatch them up at mr barrows place.

Re: Martins Predawn Song Queston.

Well that is a good question. I have not heard ours singing yet- full force anyway, but some of the males have been mixing the dawn song in their repituar as they fly around. Few years now males have been either on their porches singing pre dawn or fly way up and sing. As to how far they go, can't b...

Howdy, in short dont try it. Martins will be back to their original home before you make it back. Give it time.

Re: Why the fighting?

Yep, sounds like a sub adult male. There is outside pressure from others who want the cavity, the residents typically go in and guard the entrance. Subbies are persistent but can pose a problem when chick's arrive, its especially hard to watch during fledged time as they put lots of pressure on the ...

Re: Nest building began this weekend in Plano

Thanks whippy, should help to answer questions. Its not all doom and gloom, birds will be fine i trust. Like the initial migration, we always wonder there they are but they show. Sounds like life is good! Glad to hear it!!

Re: Laying is 2 1/2 weeks later than last year.

I hope mr barrow chimes in on this one. Hes got some thoughts. Of 43 cavities/ active nests zero eggs, as of yesterday; counting both home site, neighbors 8 supergourds and the satellite site. This time last year we had 9 or 10 eggs so egg laying began 25-26 april. Just now started seeing dragonflie...

Re: Predator Proof Cage

Well, great! Must have been horrible. Owls are a big problem, seems the avian predators escape our efforts and really damage a colony.

Except your fix will inspire others to combat that problem.

Re: Predator Proof Cage

Wow! Sorry you had to go through that, your set up as a look of determination. And safe, secure martins. Glad your martins adjusted; just curious, how long did it take for them to re-establish?

Re: ASY nesting at a new colony?

No problem, lots of folks wait years and years. Glad to hear your quick success. Keep the questions going as the season progresses, we love to help land lords and the martins raise young. You'll enjoy endless hours while they are here and endure the long wait when they go.

Re: Disappearing Martins

Great news, it is worrying! Geeze, when I turn the corner on the street and don't see martins I start worrying. Sorry about all the questions. Didnt know the setup. They can be funny like that, not a peep, no martins in sight, think the coast is clear to check them and you've just flushed a bunch. S...

Re: ASY nesting at a new colony?

First year, 12 pair not bad! As far as the older birds, could be lots of reasons...they may have come from a broken down house, predators, could be land lords passed away or moved. My colony stared with one ASY pair, rest were subbies. At any rate you have martins, congrats. Sounds like you have a g...

Re: Disappearing Martins

First, your sure the martins are gone? Not in the houses, waiting it out? Your weather isn't really horrible, 60s and 70s.... Have you seen anything under your houses, martin or owl feathers, martin wings or dead birds? What does the inside of the houses look like, any remains or other evidence? Som...

Re: When the Hawks move on

Whippy, Soon as I commented, went out to make sure alls well...heard the angry sound of a martin zipping and bombing something. Sure enough, a large hawk, don't think it was an accipeter, goes by with a bunch of martins buzzing him and a sea gull doing the same thing. Never saw a gull do that but he...

Re: Feeding other type birds.

Yeah I used to feed them too, doves mostly but the sparrows found it quick, grackles and starlings. Started putting suet cakes out like flyin-lowe, all of a sudden woodpeckers, mockingbird and later warblers showed. Doves not so much. Ill continue to put up suet, no loose seeds. Some sparrows showed...

Re: Starling resistant hole

Hi Laura,
Congrats on your pair! Yeah with lots of space to choose from they sure can. Wont last long, he will go where she is. In fact they may be sneaking out into the one cavity just before dark. Beautiful picture and glad you spent time and effort on the martins.
