Re: End of season

Wow thats a fact, you have been busy. Sounds challenging to catch dragonflies, I think I'd miss more than I caught. You will be surprised how fast they catch on to flipped food, just have to keep trying. Sounds like once you have that battle won, next step is a platform feeder Rob. I'm glad to hear ...

Nest box traps on PMCA gourd hub

All, Hope this helps anyone trying to rid their area of sparrows. Steve K had an old post about how he catches starlings, attribute the idea to him. I'll still call it Sullys sparrow hotel. Patent pending....I'll share proceeds with Steve of course. I have two unused PMCA 4 unit/gourd hubs, designed...

Re: End of season

Good! Always look to improve what you can for their return. Houses and gourds take some maintenance, so do the winch and pulley systems. Time seems to slip by so early planning is key. Lots of stuff to do, next winter I'm anticipating cold weather so am planning for that now. Going to do some major ...

Neat picture of a happy pair! Glad you got out, now is the time to plan for next year...be ready for your colony to expand alot. Your doing the same I am, trapping! Or at least trying to darn doves and greater grackles are eating all the food. I want to have the sparrows know its a good safe place t...

Re: Tips on attracting Martins to my house.....HELP

Yours is a delicate situation. In short yes, should have left it alone, shot or set a trap and caught them for disposal. May be too late at this point but there was one egg left, so they may come back. Its something we all learn from and be better landlords. If the martins are successful they will c...

Re: Took my houses down today

Yes, echo that. Never again. After it started to clear we got another weak front, a weakened martin male died right in the nest. Found another in the back yard under some rocks. I think these birds faced the strong winds while crossing and stalled at the coast, made it as far as they could.

Re: Tips on attracting Martins to my house.....HELP

Forgive me but was it a chickadee or sparrows nest you discovered? Not sure how a chickadee would react to a removed nest, but it sounds like a house sparrows MO to go into a rage and destroy nearby nests. Sorry they left, hope they come back. This close to end of season there may be little chance t...

Re: HOSP takeover

Its a tough one, not being there allows sparrows to do their dirty work. Even a blind is tricky if they see you. They are smart as heck, if you go that route set up the blind and leave it in place so they are used to it. If they spy you, they take off, iv found though that when they are fixated on a...

Re: A good season

Good last treat for you! Bet they are your birds, just making sure things are in order before taking off. Almost hear them saying, "nope didn't leave anything behind, and, hope I can beat these guys back next year" and finally "passports????? we don't need no stinking passports!" Few martin chicks c...

Re: Pole question

Hi, ill bet you get the same answer a bunch of times...no issues with them getting heavier. Its a great system. We use two of the PMCA 12 unit racks with double pulleys. One is using excluder gourds which are pretty heavy, not a problem. When your putting it up, just make sure the pulleys and lines ...

Re: Why would they leave?

Cracked or pecked? May be too late to tell, however something happened to the female...male cannot incubate eggs. Either something got her while in there which caused a cracked egg, or she was out somewhere and got killed.

Please put up predator guards and snake netting.

Re: Update from the Sask Shrimp Eaters

I_caramba,
Try to trap all off season, it will lessen the pressure when martins arrive. They seem to dispurse in the summer but in winter will be hungry and trappable.
