Re: Losses......

Lost 4 residents. Plus one sub adult male found dead in a gourd, early arrival that didn't make it. Those arrivals were stressed, skinny and drooping wings. They all looked roughed up.

Re: Sparrow control-off season

Ok, thank you. I too store everything off season and bait the back yard to trap and shoot. I was just going to put up one 3 room and set some traps. I suspect the sparrows look for potential houses all year and if so they investigate...and won't check out. Just have no experience in that.

Sparrow control-off season

All,
Off season sparrow control question: will they inspect and enter a house out of breading season?

I trap and shoot during off season and store the martin houses. Trapping is hit or miss. If I set traps in a house, leave one up to attract, will they enter? Anyone had any luck?

Thanks!

Re: Too late?

My guess would be the sparrows are keeping them at bay. Doesnt take long for the sparrows to build, but if its a subbie pair it will be easy for the sparrows to intimidate them and take over. Get rid of the sparrows quick or risk losing the martins that could start your colony.

Re: Adding traction to entrances...

Great! Martins will appriciate it especially those struggling. Iv got them about a half inch from the entrance. By then they have the momentum and grip, besides their shoulders should be beyond the entrance then its good. Not all need it, if I see a martin struggling I assume it just doesn't like th...

Re: Nightmare Day

Sorry Bill,
Thats such bad news, one of the many hard times in our purple disease. Losing one is bad, losing many worse. Like Toy said, you did what you could. A lack of insects and bad weather are beyond our control.
Doesn't make it easier.
Hope the rest of your season smoothes out.

Re: I need help to resize photos

Caroline, They are amazing. You fear the worst, yet the martins do ok. Id be worried with the heavy equipment, but have seen pictures of martin housing at a big construction site. Glad your birds are good, like to see the pictures!! My neighbor has a small 3 cavity house, last year they put a bouncy...

Re: Another killing May in PA

Sorry Doug,
Those migrants especially the young ones face a tough time, if they don't catch on can spell doom. Sounds like most of your colony would have been in jeopardy without the added food. Wish the others would have caught on.
Hope the weather improves for you and your birds.

Re: Training Martin's to take food...how?

As they say, just takes that first one. Made another June bug trap, they really keyed on the spiraling flying motion of those bugs.
Yeah the winter lesson and the info here inspired the attempt. Just have to keep it up and train train train.

Re: Training Martin's to take food...how?

training day #1, very well!!! Over the last week iv been collecting those June bugs from the front garage lights. I'll stick them in the freezer, last night I used a 5 gallon bucket, created a cardboard cone and cut the bottom off for a funnel and lined that with tin foil then put a light in it to a...
