Re: Young will not fledge

I hold the chick, towell is your choise...expect poop...may have to gently pry open their mouth with a fingernail from the side, dip the cricket in water or gator aid and put the cricket straight in. It will clamp down on it, sometimes rejecting it. They dont like to cooperate at first, Just do it a...

Re: MITES! I had no idea!

Thats good Ed, yes replace the nests! Gets to the heart of things. As John suggests alcohol works perhaps use it on a towell and wipe the obveous group outside should work quickly. Gets them off you while you work. Treat after with sevin. They irritate but that's about it, dont be too shy to go back...

Re: MITES! I had no idea!

Yep thats bad. It happens though if conditions are right. Lots of ideas and personal feelings here on the forum but get some sevin dust quick. Lowes has it, home depot or a garden store. I use a turkey baster and dust around. You are going to want to dust them directly it will kill them. Dust everyt...

Re: Young will not fledge

Yep try to feed them when the parents are out guarantee parents know they are there. Do what u can. Had the same thing last year, fed 4 chicks for days...subbie lost his mate. Three made it found last one dead in the gourd, male kept coming around checking on it. I didnt know it had died still feel ...

Re: Expecting some jumpers....

Toy- good lord! Good thing you are around!! The aggressive older birds is surprising though. Yes it does make you wonder how many of the fledges survive. Not many i suspect, we have all seen parents bring them back but i see there are fewer than had leave originally. I hope for the best but that is ...

Re: Expecting some jumpers....

I hope they all stay in, even with rain close by it should help to cool things down. They lay low in the heat however. I installed 90 degree elbows on the caps of the gourds in the event we had late nesters during the high heat maybe an option for you. Plugged them with a bit of foam pipe insulation...

Re: The Forum vs Facebook

I too am reluctant (read wont) do facebook, personal reasons i guess. The forum has been friendly, informative and sufices for me and the needs of our martins. Works for me! Those of us more connected would migrate to facebook. Both good tools, i trust PMCA will keep both running for us. Forum has b...

Re: Dead Fledglings?

Could have been young that never caught up to its nestmates. Could very well be as Toy suggests. One or two stronger chicks get to the front and thus the food. Parents know sometimes and push through to feed those lacking but not all survive. One way to monitor and keep these unpleasant surprises do...

Re: Mysterious Predator

My guess would be a weasel or smaller predator, not an owl. sounds like you have good owl protection, whatever it is it will be back, its been successful thus far. Id beef up the predator guards and maybe snake netting as an added deterrent? You may not have starling pressure thus the round holes, b...

Re: Nest check 3

In short, yes. It chose that cavity for whatever reason. Probably just to drive off the competitors, it wil fly away as far as it can and drop them. Goes to show that they cannot co-exist. My experience has been the subbies doing that. Sux, sorry about your nestlings and glad you got a good shot in....

Re: Need your help asap

That's tough, poor guy got left behind but at least it didnt suffer. You did what you could. Keep the crickets for next year i guess. Sparrows. Its end of season, if the parents are brining the fledges home at night you probably dont want to close the house up just yet. Keep after the nesting sparro...

Re: Need your help asap

Thank you for taking care of them, its a tough time for the young. Did it eat? Parents will know they are there, watch close your best bet may very well be the rehabber someone suggested if they arent getting fed. Parents will have a hard time feeding fledgelings and those left behind. My fear would...

Re: Need your help asap

Live crickets are good, stun the crickets dont want them fighting and harming the chick on the way down. Dont do dried mealworms.
Dip the crickets in water or pedialite.
Boy hope it works out.

Re: What to do with a jumper?

If you know what cavity it came from you can be sucessful, feel its chest, if you can feel its breastbone its probably hungry...if its thin feed it some crickets dipped in pedialite or water. Then lower the housing slowly, quietly and plug the other cavities helps to have assistance. Check the brood...

Re: Anyone take their housing down yet

Yep, your state sees early arrivals. I'm thinking your safe, our birds still come home at night and leave for the entire day. Some preening and socilising during the morning but a few families have gone entirely. Males still show to guard their cavities before leaving for the night. Here i figure la...

Wow, well hope they pull through Anthony. Good catch, funny how things look good on the surface but a little investigation reveals something else. Experience goes a long way. We can only control so much. You know we look to the skies when they are supposed to be in the area, rejoice when they show a...
