Lawn mower

Had a first
While cutting the grass I usually have TS barn swallows following me picking off the bugs I kicked up. Well tonight I had a few martins doing the same. Never have then done it. This year or last.
They were flying pretty low not their usual higher up.

Re: New for me: Summertime Hawks

We have 2 Riggs both apartment style with gourds under all but 2 compartments occupied with eggs all the way up to 2 nests already fledge. I heard the alarm call and the litt...

Re: New for me: Summertime Hawks

We have a red tailed hawk hanging around looking for the abundant baby rabbits and checking out the chickens ( who are locked up). The martins sound the alarm every time and chase him away

Re: missing eggs

Just did my nest check and I have 3 nests that had eggs gone. I also had a best 3weeks ago with displaced eggs spread about that I replaced in nest and were displaced again a week later I removed them and there is a new batch off eggs. Seems the SY’s are being a problem this year. Didn’t have this i...

Still some complete nests without eggs.
I did have one nest where the eggs were scattered I replaced in nest. Will wait and see. I suspect SY interference

Re: Trees close to PM housing

I’m new to the purple Martin thing I’ve seen occupied houses up fairly close to trees. In every instance there was a clear flight path from more than one angle The only downside I can see from a site close to trees is hawks can get close using the trees as cover before they are seen. At wide open si...

ASY question

This is my second year as a landlord. I had 11 pairs attempt nesting last year all but 1 pair hatched and fledged young. The one pair failed due to nesting in the upper attic compartment and eggs didn’t hatch. ( I have since sealed the upper compartments) My question is out out 22 adults from last y...

Re: crickets and meal worms

I tried flipping live meal worms and beetles today to 5 martins today. They were perched on the house looked like one actually saw something go by but none took flight to catch. Weather in 50’s last few days. One more day of 50’s then 60-80’s through the weekend

Re: Racks are up!

Question about added new 2 nd rig close to original Do the ASY view the new rack something new or just an extension of the original set up? Reason I ask is there seems to be a lot of interest in the new set up as much as if not more than the original. It is pretty close to original probably about 30...

Gulf migration

We are in our way back to Galveston from a great cruise vacation currently in the Gulf of Mexico late yesterday afternoon I saw a few swallows flying with the ship I was too far away to identify them for sure as martins.
Could they have been? My research says they do fly over the gulf
