Wow,
Congratulations, that really some accomplishment. Here I thought most Purple Martins were on the East Coast.
Keep up the good work.

Re: Another unsuccessful year
It has been yet another unsuccessful year trying to attract PM here in East Tennessee. We just returned from 3 week vacation all over the northern mid west area. Ten states in 3 weeks Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, Mount Rushmore, The Crazy Horse monument, The Bad Lands and so much more. But the wh...

Re: Use Lexel in place of silicone
Lowered the house this morning for minor repairs to the elbow vents that I placed on the gourds ( storm coming in). Found out the hard way that silicone doesn't adhere well at all to Troyer gourds. No problem, Lexel works great. Taking advantage of having the house lowered, I snapped a couple of pi...

Re: In Warwick,RI - new to being a landlord - need help
My gosh, you have a great set up; it screams location! bear down on those sparrows, start with the males, shoot and trap...the TTS wont be successful all the time; sounds like you gave them alternatives...someone here let the TTS nest in a gourd then moved it and they were fine. There's hope! My po...

Re: New landlord update
Happy to say we have 10 nests with eggs! 5 eggs seem to be the most in one nest so far. First due to hatch in a few days. First timer here with martins always wanted to start a colony but didn't live in good habitat. The new place is perfect, wide open area established colonies less than a 1/4 mile...

Re: Modern Recommendations help attract and keep Martins
Rodger, I had a similar experience as you did. My father was very successful attracting martins during the 1950s and 1960s in south Texas. When I settled into my own home, everything was different because of the European starlings in this area. I had fair success attracting martins but very bad exp...

Re: About to pack it in
Don't give up. You never know when a storm could damage an existing colony. Predators could scare martins away from a colony. A few years ago, a friend picked up an ASY pair late in June and his colony started from that point. They abandoned wherever they had been before that and nested again, rasi...

Re: About to pack it in
Grab a map and compass and point the dawnsong speaker directly at that colony 5 miles away. You'll draw martins in. Mark your house and that colony on a map, draw a line and use a compass to point the horn. I wish I had a colony that close. My closest is 27 miles. At this point in the season, targe...

Well, I guess it's about time to pack it in. Discouraging saw one Martine in early April and have nothing since... Mirrors mud, you name it Morning song. Nothing. Have a large colony within 5/6 Miles. Bummin

Re: Attracting Purple Martins - what worked for me
Hello all. New member here. I thought I'd share something very simple that we did that I think finally gave us success after 3 years of trying to attract PMs. I'm a newbie so this is probably common knowledge but it's a revelation to me. We have 12 Bo11 Plus Gourds but our site is not optimal at al...

Re: How long to hold my breath in SE PA?
To all of you wannabe's. KEEP TRYING and HANG IN THERE. I was trying since 2005 in northwest PA and had one pair in 2012. I didn't have any nesters again until last year. Two pairs of SY birds and 2-3 SY bachelor males. They all showed up within 48 hours of each other. This year, I had three ASY ma...

Re: Just about to write off 2017....
So happy for you! You are the third person that I know of who has got a pair of martins this year that didn't have any last year. The other two are taxidermy lady and Mitch Booth. Normal activities in the back yard will not disturb them. They actually do better with humans nearby. You can probably ...
