Re: Vertical versus horizontal Conley gourds from Troyer

I use them both. If you have owls the horizontal gourd put the birds farther away from the entrance. Plus with the Conley entrance you get added protection. The vertical gourd is very roomy and with the tunnel on it, and the Conley entrance, it too offers protection. Nothing wrong at all with mixing...

Re: A good season

Way to go Lisa. I'm not far behind. I have a few left in my T-14. All of my gourds are empty. I am being blessed with about 40 martins returning each evening and staying in the gourds and T-14. I've never had Martins return after fledging so this is a real treat. That is great to hear of your season...

Re: Relief!

Thats great to hear, C.C. Seems we both got going good after a rough start at both colonies. You with the freeze and me with the hawk. I too am relieved that my colony flourished and the season is almost over. I have just a couple of babies left to fledge. I will miss them when they are all gone but...

Re: Advice on new set up for 2022

This is my S&K 16 gourd Fountain Rack. It has the 2 inch square pole. Every year I've made some sort of modification to it. I've welded the sections together to make it strong and sway less in the wind. I added 8 gourds to the inner positions making it a 24 gourd rack. I've also reinforced the fount...

Re: Late season visitors

BirdieGirl, It gets better every year. Every morning I have about 20 to 40 Martins hanging around on the gourds and in the sky. The babies that are near fledging hang out of the gourds and watch them. Some of the babies venture out onto the porches. So I have dubbed these Martins as "The First Fligh...

Re: Late season visitors

T14’s are great houses. But I always thought 1 improvement could make them even better. Instead of having 1 door panel that opens all 3 compartments in a column, I think each compartment in a column, should have its own hinged door. That would make nest checks easier, especially in preventing fledg...

Re: New Colony Question 1 ASY Pair with 4 chicks 12 days old

Hey, Jones. It is possible that these birds hanging around that appear to be females are actually SY males. Not saying for sure nor am I testing your identification skills rather, the activity you describe is similar to what is going on here at my colony. I have a lot of babies and their parents com...

Re: Nest Check at Casa de Whippy 6/27/2021

Like the look of that house, really sharp man. This is the T-14 that our member, Jangles, built. If you remember he moved last year and had to take it down and did not want to put it back up knowing that he was temporary in his new location. He offered it up to whomever would come get it and it jus...

Re: Nest Check at Casa de Whippy 6/27/2021

C.C. Same boat here. I had two gourds hatching while many others laying while many others were nest building. Pretty crazy this year. I also have an abundance of SY Martins and most of those are with 3 and 4 babies. The few large clutches I have are from ASY females and I have about 5 to 6 in each o...

Re: Goards for Martins

I looked them up and came across this image. If yours are similar then I would think so if they are big enough. There are also ways you can add a tunnel to them. Perhaps do a quick search here on the forum as there is most likely a post on that topic. These bottle neck gourds are similar in shape to...

Nest Check at Casa de Whippy 6/27/2021

I had a couple of gourds hatch earlier than most so they were close to fledging for awhile so I didn't do any nests checks until they left. They finally fledged with the last one leaving two days ago. Therefore, I've sent 9 out the door so far. I have 29 pairs this year confirmed. Up from 15 of last...

Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

Try to find a sparrow distress call. That might bring them in as well. If that works then you'll have a two pronged approach for those pesky little things.

Re: Birds Not Liking Decoy

I had an ASY male wearing out one of my decoys so I removed it as well. I figured he had better things to do than to swoop down on this all day. My hawk issues have gone away so I'm not worried about taking it down. I'll put it back next Spring and remove again once eggs have hatched.

Re: What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Birdman, I placed my decoys in the path of the Martins exit from the gourd rack and housing. They would have to fly by the decoys when they left. By doing this, the decoys are then in the path of the hawk if it decides to bust in on them when they are on the gourds. The decoys will slow the hawk dow...

Re: Lights for owl protection

Dave, I've read that lights don't have a real effect on the owls. What has worked for a few here is the playing of music below the gourd rack. Owls hunt by sound and they hone in on the sounds of the martins chattering at night. With the music on they can't hear the martins. Do a quick topic search ...

Re: Landlord dive bombing

Maybe he wants to play.

Take some crickets out with you next time and when he dive bombs you toss him a cricket or two and see what he does. Most likely he'll ignore the crickets but these birds have such neat personalities that he may just start taking them.

Re: Nest check 6/6/21

My season is going just like yours. Having had a stumble with a coopers hawk in the spring everything turned around just fine. I've increased by 20 pairs with an addition of a bunch of SY birds working the gourds and T-14. There are nests in both gourds and T-14 but I haven't counted them as solid p...

Nest Check today 6-6-21

Got the rack and houses down today away from some very busy parents. Boy did they fuss. Out of 24 gourds I have 19 pairs I have 3 pairs in my Trio with 6 compartments. I have 8 Pairs in my Jangles T-14 with 5 nests with no eggs but I suspect these were built by 2 industrious pairs. I've seen them br...

Re: Morning Hawk watch

Here's Manny. I timed the photo to have 4 martins in the air and a few on the gourds. This is at 2:18pm central. A lot of feeding babies going on with a lot of SY activity as well. The head is a flat size 3 soccer ball and a baseball cap fits on it just fine. The arms are a 2 inch PVC pipe with a ho...
