Re: Decoys

As long as he is hitting your decoys he's not getting any Martins. I have Martins dive bombing my decoys all the time. Seems the young ones are using them as target practice. They aren't making any threatening noises that they do when trying to run something off so I'm not real worried about it. The...

Re: gourd racks

SS,

How do you like the Vertical gourds? I'm planning to buy 10 of those and add them for next year. I am doing quite well with the Horizontals but want to add a little bit of a twist.

Thanks,

Re: Trio-12 Repairs / Parts / Replace

Corey, I obtained a Trio Wade from my neighbors house across the alley. The original homeowner from 3 owners ago put it up. So I moved it to my yard. When I moved it, I did some refurbishing of it. Cleaned it up, replaced interior walls and exterior panels and so on. I put window screen pieces on al...

Re: Decoys

That's good stuff. As you continue to observe you'll notice the directions the hawk comes from. If he continues to use two or three of the same paths, place decoys in those paths. Not sure your area and set up allows this but, mine did. Regardless, if you can place the decoys below the level of the ...

Re: gourd racks

Dave, The AAA is one I am considering as well but I am also looking at the deluxe K-24. I plan to use an equal mixture of Horizontal and Vertical gourds. These selections are being planned for my ranch in the Bryan/College Station area of Texas. I currently have the S&K Fountain rack in my back yard...

Re: Decoys

BTW. I got the idea of inserting the rod into the decoy from Steve Kroenke's post a while back. Thanks, Steve for posting these photos a long time ago. I hope you don't mind me re-posting them. I am grateful for the idea that works so well for me and my Martins and wanted to share with others again....

Re: Decoys

I drilled a 1/4 hole in the bottom of my decoy and inserted a 3 foot long by 1/4 inch fiber glass rod at an angle and ran the rod inside the decoy until it got wedged inside the head and neck with no glue involved. I beveled the rod tip so it'll fit a bit snugger than what a squared off tip would. T...

Re: Has this baby been wounded?

Yes. Sevin. Sorry. Got to typing too fast.

You don't need a lot just 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon under the bedding.

Re: Has this baby been wounded?

I agree with Ed. Clean out that nest put fresh material but, before you add the nesting material, go one step further and add a 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon under the new nest material to keep all other parasites out of the nest. I think if a bird pecked at the baby the wounds would be a lot deeper. You care...

Re: Cardboard nest boxes

VM, I've never used card board in my housing so can't answer with that experience however, knowing the composition of cardboard I can see where it would retain water if it gets wet and therefore keep the nest cavity wet. Also, the corrugated structure will allow mites and fleas even blow fly larvae ...

Re: Decoys

JHCox, Right on, Man. Right on. Same thing here. Decoys are saving many lives. Two days ago the Coopers Hawk had a battle with one of my decoys I have placed on my fence then went over and battled a decoy I have set on the perch rods of my Trio Wade. I first saw him sitting on the chimney of my neig...

Re: Have they already left?

You know, Lisa. Pretty funny timing. Just after writing that last note I'm here in my kitchen looking out the window at 20 or more Martins of all ages in my airspace, on my gourds, going in and out , both babies and parents returning to their same gourd. This is the craziest thing I've seen in my 6 ...

Re: Have they already left?

Yep. One day I'm watching a very large group of Martins and the next day I'm watching only 4 pair feed their late arriving babies. I am greeted with social activity in the mornings for a couple of hours but for the most part all of my adults and fledglings have moved on. I see two ASY males in the m...

Re: Is it OK to handle nestlings?

Diane,

Yes it is. When a nest change is performed we take the babies out of their nest and put them in a bucket or box as we change out the material in the cavity. No harm is done.

Re: hawk resistant swallow boxes

Ken, Not sure what you can do with regards to barriers and such to prevent hawk attacks and also not sure how much you have read prior to posting so I apologize in advance if I state the obvious. I personally do not have a problem with owls but I did attract a good many coopers hawks this year with ...

Re: Troyer H. Gourds.

LadyBug, It all depends on how you hang them. If there is a gap between the hanger within the mounting holes of the gourd it is possible for water to leak in. I use the same gourds and have not yet had any wetness problems as my mounts fit very snugly into the holes of the gourds. I also try to inco...

Re: What happened to the martins in North Richland Hills, TX?

I have 3 Mississippi Kites in my area and have not witnessed any aggression from them towards the Martins. Being a bit concerned when I first noticed their presence in my airspace a did a little research and what I found set me at ease a bit. Feeding Behavior Catches many large flying insects high i...

Re: Nest check today 6/27/20

Keg, I was hoping to at least double from last year and was happy to have more than doubled from 4 pair to 11 pair in my gourds. I have two SY pair raising their young now and this morning I noticed two ASY males occupying gourds that have been empty all season. They are going in and out with SY fem...
