Re: Hi

Geno,

Welcome.

Are you able to post pictures of your location and gourd rack?

Since you have been lurking you know there are a lot of smart people with a lot of great ideas here. Perhaps allowing a visual will help things move along and lead to your success this year.

Re: First arrivals

Great picture. Thanks for sharing. 8 pairs last year with early arrivals this year. Here's to hoping you get 100% occupancy. My colony has grown by one pair every year except last year it bounced up by two. Year 1 - one pair. Year 2- 2 pair. Year 3- 4 pair. So here I am in year 4 having moved a Trio...

Re: My new gourd racks

That's really cool. Just last night I was teaching my son to weld. He's 14. I once tried aluminum but had a hard time with it and ran out of test stock. I have a Lincoln Weld Pak 3200 with the aluminum conversion kit. Will probably try it again one day as I like to build stuff as well. Until I saw t...

Re: The winds are favorable for Texas but...

You guys probably know about this but windy.com is pretty cool site. There is a wealth of weather information there and so many layers you can look at other than just wind direction of many altitudes.

Re: Purple Martin Update...February 3, 2020

PMDavid, I know it's weird. I'll see Martins all around me for the longest time wondering what happened to all of mine. Then they just show up. Last year they showed up in March but there were Martins all over Texas since end of January. I remember last year many of the landlords across the country ...

Re: Purple Martin Update...February 3, 2020

Currently the winds are out of the South over the Gulf of Mexico blowing into Louisiana. They are colliding with North winds just off the coast of Texas. The winds continue out of the South on a line through South Texas, Houston, Alexandria up to Winnsboro but are currently out of the North just wes...

Re: Emil, Your Sideboards

Whippy, YES, its ok to put sideboards on the inside. In my case, I cannot get inside of the gourds, so I put the sideboards on the outside. If you use a homemade entrance that is 3/4in thick, then you do not need sideboards. Starlings enter a SREH by tilting their body sideways, but they cannot til...

Re: Emil, Your Sideboards

Whippy, I did not install the sideboards on the inside because I use gourds and cannot get inside the gourd. However, with your houses and doors, YES, the sideboards can be installed inside. The entire idea is to make the entrance thicker with thicker entrance plates, or with sideboards. From the s...

Re: House Sparrow Lookalike?

I know the link did put a lot of photos of finches on there but at the very top of that page are the actual red headed sparrows. Check yours out and see if they have the red heads and a little red on the wings. But, of course, one can't mistake the tuxedo head dress of the male sparrow and the dark ...

Re: House Sparrow Lookalike?

Sharon, I'm in Plano. Last summer I had what appeared to be a pair of house sparrows on my gourd rack. I was trying to get my son to whack em but my wife was little bit against it. Good thing. As I looked through the binoculars the pair of sparrows actually had red on them. It wasn't the black tuxed...

Re: Emil, Your Sideboards

I do not know if a 2in crescent will allow the martins to enter. If you have a 2in pipe cut to size that the martins will use, and if that pipe is cut to 3/4inch, you will not need sideboards. What I am saying is that a 3/4 inch thick opening does not require sideboards. Thank you, Emil. I'll mess ...

Re: house sparrows on outer farms

G Fox, Not sure of your relationship with your neighbors etc but a good conversation can bring good results. Maybe your neighbors are in the same mind set as you about attracting native birds. You never know. You might create an alliance in the area and get everybody on board to eliminate the sparro...

The winds are favorable for Texas but...

The winds our blowing out of the South all along the coast of Mexico and up into Texas but I really hope the Martins hang back a bit because it's going to be real cold here on Wednesday and Thursday. Not sure how deep into Texas the cold weather will dip but there is a prediction of mixture of rain ...

Re: Emil, Your Sideboards

I have an interest in making these for my Trio - Wade. I received and installed crescent opening for the house but they are just cut out of the sheet metal. From reading your plans, It looks like I can make these and put them on the inside of the Trio by glueing them to the factory made crescent pan...

Re: Female arrival

Last year I put a hand warmer in the gourd where I had a pair when it got cold. I nestled it under the pre-nesting material and let them do whatever with it. I took it out the next day.

Re: Introduction: New Member From NE Louisiana

NE Louisiana, Huh? If you have an interest in putting up housing you should probably hop to it. You already have martins tricking into Louisiana so if you get a house or gourd rack up in time you may be lucky enough to get your colony started. There's a wealth of information here. Like you, I lurked...

Re: SREH's Without Porches

Steve, I am not sure about that as I don't have any experience other than loading my housing with porches and perches. I would think if they are used to the SREH's then they'd plop right in. I do know that when I started my colony 4 years ago, the majority of birds using my gourds would spend some t...

Re: barn owl vs martins

I open barn owl box every year trying to get them. You do not make much sense with your post. Do you mean to harm the barn owl? You should be clear on what your intentions are. Jack, I read that as he has opened a nesting box for the barn owl and in doing so he may be concerned about the owl preyin...

Re: I’ve inherited Martins! How to do the right thing?

Susan, You can actually order the parts you need for you your Trio systems. https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/127/trio-parts-accessories/ One thing I am not sure of, so you might want to send a question to whomever you purchase from, is can you order the Trio Castle with the parts you want? Instead ...

Re: Isn't Prenesting With Sevin Dust Ineffective?

I've always pre-nested with Sevin and have had good results. last year I did have one gourd get covered in mites as I do believe the Sevin was rendered ineffective due to getting wet. I put a teaspoon under the nesting material and within a a day or so all the mites were gone. The other gourds remai...
