Re: Blue martin

I figure it's just some kind of color mutation.

Re: Blue martin

No, and it's not a tree swallow...we have plenty of them.
It looks like all of the other mature males, except that it has a blue sheen on its back instead of dark purple.

Re: Tree swallows

I put up a dozen tree swallow boxes this year and the little fighter jets are buzzing all over the yard now. They've never even looked at the martin housing, and although they squabble amongst themselves they'll perch with the martins without any trouble. If you put some up, make sure the boxes are...

Blue martin

Another question for all of you veteran landlords. Last year, we had a male martin that was bright blue. We figured that he was a juvenile and would be dark purple the next year like the other males. He returned this year, and he is still blue----although a somewhat-darker shade of blue now, and mor...

Re: Martins killed a snake

We used to have a cat that would eat baby copperheads, and she showed no ill effects from it.

Can martins and barn swallows coexist?

I love this forum because I'm able to acquire knowledge and advice from more-experienced people to get answers to my questions, so here goes another one: When we first moved to our place in the country here ten years ago, we had a colony of barn swallows in our horse barn. Then, the next year, we st...

Re: Martins killed a snake

That's disappointing that the snake was most likely already dead. I was going to turn my martins on the copperheads next.

Re: Martins killed a snake

The snake was very small, about 4-6 inches.
What is a HOSP?
Thanks for your responses.

Martins killed a snake

My wife was watching our martins out the window, and they kept flying down to the ground and pecking at something there, both landing and pecking and fluttering and pecking. When she went out to see what it was, she found a small garter snake which they had killed. Has anyone else had martins killin...

Mockingbird

I feed the local birds every winter, but this year, there is a mockingbird who has taken over my back yard and is chasing all the other birds away from the feeders, as it obviously sees everything as its personal territory. My concern is that when my martins return (usually the third week of March h...

Pest strips for sparrows

Greetings from Perryville, MO! As most landlords do, I've had a lot of trouble with sparrows over the years. The traps are expensive, so I tried the sticky-glue pest strips (I had seen that suggestion on one of the forums on this wonderful website), sliding them under nesting materials that the spar...

Re: HELP! Martin Colony Abandoned in Louisiana, Missouri

John, that's what we do every winter until the martins arrive; all of the holes are covered until then. But when the martins get here in late March, the sparrows compete for the boxes that we have opened. I saw where someone talked about using those sticky mouse traps to catch them, and I was thinki...

Re: Psycho male

Well, now the buzzing appears to have become a family affair. Yesterday evening before sunset, my wife was dive-bombed not only by the usual male, but a female and three fledglings, all at the same time. I guess the fledges are modeling dad's behaviors...if those kids come back next year, we won't b...

Re: HELP! Martin Colony Abandoned in Louisiana, Missouri

Just curious, Linda, how do you go about eliminating the sparrow problem in the winter? Sorry I can't held you much with your dilemma, but I'm a relatively new martin person and I don't have all the knowledge like other posters. But I do have a lot of problems with sparrows nesting in my martin comp...

Psycho male

This is the best martin year we've yet had----small operation, three houses, with 10 pairs----and we've really enjoyed all of the activity, up until the last few weeks. One mature male has become really aggressive (and we've seen fledglings lately from his place, so I'm sure he's being protective, b...

Re: Best friend Martin for life

In reply to your question about the weather, Kathy, we have had a lot of storms with high winds this spring and summer. There's a large colony about a half a male down the road from us, and we wondered if maybe their poles had blown down like ours and maybe they didn't put them back up right away, a...
