Re: Hello from Mount Dora, Florida

RC Missouri...big state with lots of options. I have some cousins in northern Missouri in Brookfield, which seems about as Norman Rockwell an area as you'll find. But it is pretty cold in winter. John born in NW Missouri, Small Farm town, Oregon Mo. Know Brookfield quit well. Use to drive my mother...

Re: Hello from Mount Dora, Florida

No, not in the villages, Had large colony in Oklahoma for 18 years before we moved here. I only seen three small colonies in villages. One down by Fish Hawk Rec center, another down Canal Street close to Truman Rec center, and another of BV by Palmer's golf course, Rarely see any swallows up by Lope...

Re: Sparrows in New Houses!!

IMO if no martins are in the area yet keep the entry holes plugged, even then male English Sparrow (MES) will still lurk, when pm's arrive open couple of entry ways is site and position your house (if you have House) so you can see down the sides. There are several low powered pellet guns available ...

Re: Hello from Mount Dora, Florida

Hello, I live up the road and across couple ponds from you in the villages. I can see why having hard time attracting Purple Martins in Central Florida, There aren't many around. I see Very few even flying during season. I have only see two small colonies here. One good thing, don't see many starlin...

Re: My version of Troyer T16.

I'm the one in the picture of the Red 67 Ford F100. look in my albums you will see picture of the base plate first. IMO this style would work good way up north being wood insulated very good, and it's pretty much water tight with the Entry hole on the back side and the nest chambers up front.

My version of Troyer T16.

Two years before I moved I retired my old plywood T14 that I modified several times made T-16 Troyer style house, but I added all the features I had in mind. I took some Kenny Flecker house design, Troyer basic design, and added some of my own additions. First the house compartments are All L shaped...

Re: First two eggs pecked on the ground

My feeling it male English sparrow. Listen for his mate call, I bet he's somewhere close setting in tree, roof, or near by line calling for mate for the new cavity he just took over. If you seen English sparrow in the area recently you can bet it him.

Re: why do I have to login every so often!

most newer computers automatically defrag and do system clean up on scheduled time. if so it's probably deleting you cookie that contains your password allows you to not have to log on.

Re: PUZZLED in Oklahoma - Baffled / Looking for Answers

My guess is you had snake attack (or Owl attack?) that when from one cavity to the next wiping out your Colony. I hope you've done regular nest check last year or the year before? When I had my PM colony couple years ago snake gone through 4 cavities in about three days or so. I suspected something ...

Re: New House Design

Neat, I'm big fan of L shaped entries or have internal nest tray baffle blocking the nest chamber or both. When I had PM colony all my straight through entries had nest baffle so hawks or owls couldn't see the nest chamber. IMO That's what great about L shaped entries built in hawk and owl guards.

Re: T-14 owl guards

This is the problem with the old T14 design. Straight through entries. Check out the Kenny Flecker Ghost house using search. I made my own version of this house in 2013 and posted picture back then (should be able to search it also) when I redone my old t14. Any T14 style house can be easily modifie...

Sharpshinned reap Havoc over here also. I seen one catch at least 6 earlier in the spring. He would make fly through about or just before sundown which would stir the PM up and they would fly above the colony. Then at dusk or darkness they would try to come to roost that's when he attacked. I scared...

Lucky Me!

Well, got offer on my house! And guess what? THEY INSISTED that the MARTIN HOUSING STAYS!. WOW BIG load of my mine. Not that I would be able to remove the housing anyway before they all fledged. Hopefully they will listen to some pointer (if They need them) to keep the colony going for years to come...

Coopers and sharpshined also will make early morning and late evening attacks if they were unsuccessful during the day. I noticed this when the PMs were flying high in the sky well after the sun goes down. I stand under my colony with water hose hoping to deture the blind sided attacks. Once Coopers...

IMO you don't have to cut down the trees if you are remotely thinking of that. I have trees on three sides and my house about 30 yards clearing. I even have house above my detached garage about 15 feet with trees on the other end have had martin in that house for 14 years. PMs do just fine zipping i...
