Re: Large Influx Of SY Purple Martins Arrived

Steve, I had 2 Sy Females show up 2 days ago. They are early. I still am also having more ASY'S showing up. Looks like we are going to have some strong South Winds to start today, so I may get more coming in. The Season is going well so far!

Sy Females Showed Up

Well I had 2 Female Sy"s    show up at my site. They are early, but great to see them. I know it is a matter of time when the Sy Males show and they are A$$ holes around the colony, but they will increase my site which I like.

If you have round holes change the out for SREH and they will not be able to get in and if they are hanging around shoot them.

Re: Rant - Cooper's Hawk are killing me!

As to Decoys: I have perching poles on the Edges of my colony with Decoy Doves and Martins on them and I can tell you that they are hit and I do not know that a single Live Martin has been taken. Do not put the Decoys on your housing as it will draw the hawks right to the Martins. Martins have been ...

From looking at you pic. I would go to left or just straight down the hill from the other pole about 20 feet. It is ok to be near the Garden.

Re: Site fidelity

The Male has site Fidelity and the female will return if she has success at a site. It is not know if the same male and female will end back up with the same as the year before. I have to say yes they do in some cases as I have watched male would show up and go straight to a certain gourd and house ...

Re: they are not staying

First it is not the entrances that you have changed over too. I remember when I changed and saw what looked liked they were having trouble, they will learn and not leave your site. I have never lost any birds due to entrances. They learn very quickly. Also the numbers will change at the beginning of...

Re: Major Increase In Purple Martins

Hi Steve and great to here that your colony and Bob's are off to a great start. As too the subject of they finding food during cold spells, I have had Martins under different weather types. I have TS here for about a week now and the weather has been cold. They are doing well and I am sure that the ...

Re: Cedar Shavings For Nesting Purposes

NEver use it due to it can and will get wet. When they get wet it can clog up the drain hole and when it rains again it will flood the nest.

Re: Major Increase In Purple Martins

Steve we are about 2 weeks away from having Martins here in Northern NC. We are going to be cold for a few days starting on Thursday and lasting until Sunday. The weather looks great starting next week and we may see some around my area then. I have had 6 Tree Swallows :) :) show up and that means t...

Re: Time to change the name SCOUT

I think that Scout is appropriate for what they are doing. I think it the definition is incorrect. When they are returning back home, they are scouting out the home they had last year to ensure it is good for nesting. Also it also to ensure they get the best nesting spot when the females shows up. R...

Could drill it out with a hole saw and put a piece of PVC with a cap and seal around it. PVC Cement may also holed it to the gourd.

Re: Natural Gourd…Outstanding Purple Martin Nesting Cavity

Steve, There is a few colonies that I have seen that are still natural gourd site around me and they are full of martins. A lot of plastic gourds are being used to replace those as they fail. Some of the plastic gourds are those we see are junk and will not last that long. I like you have a lot on t...
