Don't know if you do 5 day nest checks or not but that would help you in finding things that might hurt your martins.....I put a very small amount of seven dust under the nest every 5 days after they hatch and that keeps the little guys clean until fledgling day. Also all my gourds get new white pin...

Would strongly suggest you call Troyers Bird Paradise and buy his book on Purple marins...It would be so helpful for you...also this website has so much to offer as far as help goes and questions you may have.

Congrats on your success , Incubation normally does not start until 2nd to last egg is laid. And if they are normal they'll lay between 4-6 eggs...

My son just had a couple subbies show up yesterday and they were hanging around pretty well all day....I believe the season is a couple weeks later this yr than last yr....Central Ohio

It was a tough couple days in Ohio as well...Lost multiple birds out of my 60 , I know of 13 that died at my site and from watching them this morning i would guess we lost half of the 60 we had ....They are recouping nicely today with this nice weather but please check your boxes again because yeste...

I have quiet a few ASY males this yr with a little white on there wings under there wings and a little white on their backs....Is this normal for younger ASY males or am i just imagining things. I also have quiet a few males that are solid Purple/Black with no white on them. It's due to molting. Wh...

I agree, throughout the years the SY reporting numbers are always a lot lower. I think people get excited early in the year when they first see a martin and then report it. I know a lot of people starting new colonies always want to track the SY migration but not as many people participate in repor...

I am currently on my second order of 5000 crickets....feeding my 40 martins about 500 a day along with scrambled eggs, we were able to help our Amish neighbors get theirs to start eating crickets as well they were so excited to say the least !!...It hasn't hit 50 degrees in Sugarcreek Ohio since ear...

The Dawnsong happens once the first arriving pairs have laid eggs and the females are incubating. The males fly up early in the mornng, before sunrise, as this is the time of day when sounds travels the farthest. He is trying to recruit more martins to the colony so that he can mate with the hens, ...

Early Arrivals

After doing some checking it seems like martins are migrating back earlier this spring....From some of you that already have martins are they earlier this spring than in past yrs. ? or am i imaging things ?

I would change that house in a min. especially with that non kept neighbor of your's thats not tending to his birds.....you'll fill up with his if you take care of them, feed some egg shells and that'll entice them right on over.
