Re: Starlings

I apologize that I think I misread your post on the type of housing you currently have. If you have a house you can add the plates. To convert gourds to sreh I believe it is best to add a tunnel and porch with the sreh.

I seriously doubt you scared them off. Was there only nesting material or were there eggs as well?

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

I have ASY pair eggs that will hatch any day now. A couple sy pairs are at the beginning stages of nest building so they can really get strung out.

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Hate to hear of your bad luck and sounds like you were doing things the right way with the predator guard. How long and big around is the guard? My first thought was snake as I don't think it would show signs of disturbing the nest but with a snake I don't think you would find an egg on the ground. ...

David, good to here from you again. I'm glad to hear you are taking your satellite rack with you as it is quite unique and your brain child. Hope you have just as much success at your new house but will miss hearing about the one and only Hot Rod.

Re: Chicadee Interference Redux

Gotham, I personally would play the dawnsong. I don't think it will run them off but if you see it having a negative effect on them turn it off and your decision has been made. On the positive side of playing it, Martins want to be around other Martins so it can make them feel more comfortable being...

Kelli, I have no experience with changing entrance holes mid season. Maybe someone else here does and they will respond.Do you have a lot of starlings? If you can control them by shooting you are good to go. The advantage of the sreh is they keep the starlings out 24/7 when your not there. When addin...

Re: Starlings

Gourds hanging below your house is a good option and many have had success with that. If your nesting pair survive the migration there and back, it would not take them long to figure out a sreh and I would not see it as a problem. You can also purchase sreh plates to go over your round holes ( after...

Re: Starlings

You said the Starling tried to enter. Do you have sreh? If so he will learn he can't enter and move on. Regardless, the starling trying to enter would not run them off. What I have noticed is they use their social time to nest build and still go out and feed in the afternoon. Watch for them to come ...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

It is not unusual for them to claim multiple cavities. I would have thought the other ASY male would have fought his way in though. I did have an ASY pair dominate an entire Trio Castle a couple years back in a year I thought I would make a major jump in numbers with sy birds. Not a single pair made...

Re: Suprise, Suprise

SY (second year) and ASY (after second year) are both sexually mature. SY birds are last years fledglings and do not have the full purple color of an ASY. Some SY males are hard to identify because they have only a slight number of purple feathers on there neck, chest, abdomen or tail area. Listen f...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

I have been fortunate to not have had a big issue with sparrows just shooting some here and again. Others have stated that after getting them under control there is far less to deal with. As you know they are persistent and will push there way in even with an established colony. The more Martins the...

Re: 2nd strait day ASY Male Visit--Question could he be starting my colony?

You didn't get your birds by accident. By dispatching sparrows and giving the bluebirds and TS an alternative nesting cavity it made your housing desirable without competition. That gave them a chance to decide they wanted to stay. Job well done!

Smeared mud "lived in look" examples

It has been recommended to smear some mud at the entrance hole to give a lived in look. I think this is a good idea because Martins want to nest where other Martins are nesting and this helps give that appearance. I am posting some examples of an entrance hole of a nesting Martin so it is easier to ...

Re: No luck yet

All you can do is keep competition birds at bay and keep doing all the right things to attract them. At that point they'll come when they come, hopefully sooner than later. If you don't get any takers this year keep your housing up for them to see until after they have migrated South.

It wouldn't take too long to drill them out while doing a nest check in the afternoon when they're most likely out feeding.

Re: Keeping fingers crossed

They will dive bomb if they see you as a threat. That is good that they are being protective of their site. Spend more time out and about your housing so they accept you and don't feel threatened.
