Re: 2 of first 4 returning are banded

Ed, I'm not aware of anyone banding in my area. Is there anyway to see all the locations that banding is taking place?

Re: A lot of visitors

Excellent, are they going in out of your housing or just flyovers? It only takes a couple to like what they see.

Bird Brain are you playing the dawn song with decoys as well. You should at a minimum be seeing visitors.

I think that will be a good placement, leaving flyways beside and behind your house. Good luck.

Re: New landlord survey

Good news Buckdog! It was most likely a female, the scout map is not showing any sy birds that far North yet. Keep us posted, I would love to hear that she brought a mate back with her.

I agree with Archer's statement about them being individuals and that they react differently. Obseve their behavior and be ready to adapt. I am always learning.

Re: Visitors Question

If they spend the night, you have a good start. Then you will see them start bringing a potential mate back with them trying to entice them into the nest. I think the pine straw (needles) help make the setup look used which is more inviting.

Those are cool, very well thought out and constructed. As far as I'm concerned if the Martins like them they are "correct". Job well done.

Re: Entrance covers for modified houses

Any pictures of your house? What material or make is it? Entrance shape? There are premade plugs for round metal housing entrances. Tape would might work for a short term fix, but won't stand the test of time.I think gourds under it is a good option for this year. Some Martins might prefer the gourd ...

Re: New houses

I understand if a sparrow starts a nest in my Purple Martin housing it's not the end of the world. What I don't understand is why I would let them to continue to build without trying to trap or stop them in some manner. I have read on this forum reports of sparrows being detrimental in one way or an...

Re: Southern Indiana - First Visitors

I would keep your decoys up unless you can tell they are negatively effecting the visiting Martins. It doesn't sound like they are bothered by them to me. Good to hear about all the visitors, be persistent even if none of these stay. You never know when your "colony starter" might show up.

Re: New houses

I was always afraid the Martins would come when I wasn't home to see them, so I raised my house and opened it up. I trapped and shot sparrows and starlings to keep them out. If it becomes to much to keep the unwanted birds out then close it up. Are you playing the dawn song? It really helps draw the...

Re: Purple Martins vs Drones

I am definitely not up to speed on the laws that govern the drones, but I thought in flying over someone's personal property there was a minimum height they had to fly at. I do know Martins are high flyers though. Good luck.

Re: Is it time to raise the gourds?

I don't see why not. Keep an eye on them to keep invasive species out. Lower them for storms, etc. as if you had Martins. Don't miss any possible opportunity to attract them.

Re: Dawn song questions

Don't give up playing the dawn song. It will attract Martins that are in the area anytime of the day. If they like what they see maybe they will make it home. Keep in mind the dawn song will not cause them to stay if they don't like your setup. If you have a sparrow problem you should be working tow...

Re: Reproduction

It is very entertaining to watch the males court the females trying to draw them back to the gourd or nest cavity that they have chosen. Right now I have more males than females , so the males are competing with each other for the attention of the females.

Looks to me like the red dot to the left gives you the most open flyways. How far is that from your house and the trees to the left?
