Re: Barn Owls

I see barn owls eat a small number of birds. If a Martin colony were close they probably would hit the Martins because thats the close and most available food. Nature adapts too the situation. Barn owl numbers are down and its a shame. I have martins and it took me 29 years to get them.I would be pu...

Re: Owl Predation

A great horned owl probably couldn't reach back far enough to pull martins out of the nest . The owl could shake house or gourd all he wants he isn't going to get martins if they would stay put. Simple to us unfortunately not martins. I question if a Martin can't see out of gourd or even stationary ...

Re: tree swallows

I had 44 martins fledge at my home site this year. Im in my 3rd year. Maybe thats some of the reason it took me 29 years to get martins. I had tree swallow interference . Now the bluebirds take a box 25 feet from the Martin rack. It seems the tree swallows wont the Martin rack. If they can't have it...

Would you have a better chance of attracting tree swallows if the box was at 10 feet instead of 5 feet?

average landlord

I probably would be classified as average landlord. I do nest checks every five days. Do nest changes twice and sometimes 3 times before fledging. Don't feed martins. There are good landlords that don't feed. I have predator guards and good gourds. I was at outer banks vacationing last week and saw ...

Re: Mysterious Predator

I am sorry to here your martins being attacked. I hear you have owl guards up. Something I don't have on my bought 24 gourd rack. The homemade 4 gourd rack will swing if an owl gets on it hopefully this will prevent owl predation. I have good climbing predator guards . Like you I will probably have ...

Re: Sparrow Spooker and PMs

I tried them on blue bird boxes last year. They worked on 2 of the boxes. Then this year the house sparrows destroyed eggs. I didn't have the spooker hanging over the entrance hole. So I made sure on the tree swallow entrance hole I hung it so the sparrow had too practically touch it.The house sparr...

Re: three young disappeared

I have a good 24 gourd rack set up. SREH on all gourds .Good predator guard. That probably means an adult male got them. I young at home and 1 each in 2 different gourds 1.5 miles up road at other location.

Re: House Sparrow Advisory for Neighbors and Businesses

I agree with your advisory. Theres a fair number of people will disagree.Even too the extent of knowing that a house sparrow will kill or destroy any eggs they come along. I put a sparrow trap in box and disguised it like it was. They never came back. Last week a sparrow killed a mother blue bird on...

house sparrow scarer

Yesterday I checked the tree swallow nest and the entrance hole had a wad of grass plug. Of course several eggs broken. The work of a house sparrow. The scarer didn't work. I have Blaine trap with live house sparrow in it with food and water but no catches. The minnow type trap does the best. Im not...

Re: Are gourds a good alternative for Tree Swallows?

I agree with the previous persons in that ts will imprint on Martin gourds. I had too run them off when I was first was trying too get martins. I used Martin bluebird ts protocol. The bluebirds understand but ts don't.I have a bb box 25 feet from Martin pole. The tree swallows won't go to it. They s...

electrocution of hummingbirds

The yellow insulators on electric fences kill hummingbirds.I painted it black to prevent this. they have 1 inch distance from ground to wire. The longer type I have now are 2 inch from ground to wire.I still painted them black. Can hummers still reach this distance.I don't won't to go around every ye...

Re: house sparrow resistant box for bluebirds

I read in birds and bloom where they believe the house sparrow should be left alone. They said put up another box just for the h.s.There not the only one protecting the h.s.A lot of people feed them and want them protected.Do these people protect rats and mice in and around there house. If there was s...

house sparrow resistant box for bluebirds

Does anyone know the dimensions for Gilbertson orTroyer entrance hole .I guess the entrance hole is the only thing that might deter a house sparrow from this box.
