Re: birds will cheer me up

20 days to Ontario is my guess, I could use a little more time, I am undergoing some serious reno's on a few of the houses now..we will need some warmer weather or we will be feeding them non stop when they get here. Sorry about the loss...my dad would say the only way to stop that lousy feeling of ...

Re: Walpole Island Purple Martin Project "Roost"

Come on down to our part of Canada, just make sure you are here around August 20-25, seems to be the peak time. Bring your fishing rod, smallmouth, largemouth, walleye, pike, channel cats, all within five minutes of the roost. That's how we spent some evenings waiting for them to show up. The video ...

Re: Walpole Island Purple Martin Project "Roost"

Thanks Smokin', Ron and of course you too Richard. It was a great summer and I find myself looking at the videos on these fall nights already. Those nights are embedded in my minds eye forever...can't wait for next summer now. Just think, April is only 7 months away...guess I better get started now ...

Re: Walpole Island Purple Martin Project "Roost"

Thanks Dave, if you get a chance to see a roost, do it, it is simply amazing that many birds can do what they do without hitting each other. It puts those balls of starlings to shame.

Thank you Michelle, I am very glad you liked it. It was definitely some of the best summer nights we ever spent together with family and friends.

Walpole Island Purple Martin Project "Roost"

Well, been a long time since I posted anything, and this post is for those who don't hit the PMCA Facebook page, but I believe my wife and I have had the best month of August a PM freak could ever have. I will try to keep this short and let the link below do all the talking. To preface the video, Ri...

Re: Where did all my birds go

Mark, probably because of people like yourself, tonight's number was thirteen. Only one male looked spent and tired, but all were up and feeding at seven tonight, and as we left the driveway, numerous birds were on the feeder for the first time. That should make our life a little easier than flingin...

Re: Where did all my birds go

My closest mentor got three yesterday. Two beauty Males and one glorious female. So, again, a big thanks from Cedar Springs Ontario as well! This weekend the weather turns poor, so I may go for a drive to some of our sites around my house and see what is going on, give some advice on egg flinging (s...

Re: Where did all my birds go

I am going to say thanks from all of us in southern Ontario because we had four show up here in Blenheim, a couple more south of us and a few more to the west near Windsor today alone..they look great so people like you help us out a great deal. The winds were strong from the south west so we antici...

Re: Opening Up PM Houses in Ontario?

You are doing everything right, you must be, they keep coming back. Your place is about 2.5 hrs east of us, so most of the things we do here will apply to your place. I have zero rooms open until my first bird arrives, usually April 1-10, but we check daily for arrivals. We got our first female Frid...

Re: #1 is Home

She is one weird bird...eats about three or four pieces of egg, only on the fly, nothing off the feeder, and the settles somewhere else within sight of me. Pretty sure she is training me rather than the other way around. I have never had a solitary female first, so this is new. Not much vocalization,...

#1 is Home

Well, the toughest one of the bunch made it home first and it she is an ASY female from room 28 on pole #3. Came home and she was on one of the poles just looking down at her house (they were ready to go up, just plugged and lowered). Scrambled the first of many eggs and she ate a couple/three chunk...

Re: Honey Bees

Last year on June 24th we had a swarm of thousands of bees as one of the hives down the road must have had a queen moving on to greener pastures. That swarm was not fifty feet from our five martin hoses with forty five pairs of martins, most of them feeding young. Not one bird went through that swar...

And then there were 16

Amazing how on April 11, 16 birds is awesome, hopeful and just brings hope and joy, but on August 11, 16 birds at home is gloomy, depressing and almost devastating. Silence is not golden for us PM landlords, almost the opposite. My ears are ringing with the lack of chatter in my back yard. I too, li...

Re: Off to a good, but late, start...

Numbers are way better, we are up at least six pair, probably closer to ten pair once we figure out how many more nest produce, over last year. They were definitely late, and the spring was slow and cold. Many nests are fives and sixes, which is average for us, but no sevens yet. We usually get one ...

Cut a chunk of pool noodle, a long stick with a nail on the end, and when they go in for the night, plug that gourd good and tight. Take the rack system down the next day and give them the a gentle squeeze until they expire. You can skip the gentle part, not many of us will care....

Re: Off to a good, but late, start...

June 10, and the good news is 44 pair sitting on 199 eggs, 9 young, and still some nice looking but empty nests. Weather is finally nice and warm and the forecast looks like summer is here. Dawn songs at 400 am until about 630, so that is nice. It kind of combats the 50-60 green frogs screaming at e...

Off to a good, but late, start...

Pulled the houses down for the fourth time this year and here is where we stand as of Saturday, June 2. 57 active nests, quite a few of them will definitely be doubles as some of the ASY pairs that have been here since April 8 probably had two or three on the go before they settled on the one they a...

Re: How Do You Make a Beak Count?

We have adopted the "wait until the egg laying is done and incubation/feeding of the young starts", then multiply by two, add your single (maybe 2) sub adult males that have no mates and presto, you have the magic number. Wait until you get 40 plus pairs or more...you give up after trying to count t...
