Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

I've got the adapters for the screw-on covers ordered. I'm generous with the pine straw in the spring, and most of the PM's take at least some out. A few take just about ALL of it out. And I gotcha on the BO11 thing Keith. Thanks to all for your input. I received the tunnels, porches and spinning ve...

Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

I personally have found that the cooling caps (that cost very little and improves ventilation) along with the clinger tunnels allow for nice dry nests. Keith Thanks, Keith. I'm happy to hear that. I've ordered the vent caps that spin but am still waiting for them. Got a message this morning that my...

Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

Thanks, everyone! I'll revisit the mounts after the rain stops. I have vents coming with the tunnels. I'll also silicone the tunnels when they get here. Looks like the spinning vents will be good enough, but I might put a PVC 90 on each gourd and just keep it plugged unless I need it later in the se...

Wet BO9 Gourds

We have a small, established colony and recently bought some S&K BO9 gourds. Tunnels have been ordered but they've not arrived yet. I blocked the entries of these gourds and put them up because there was rain in the forecast and I figgered that would be a good time to see if the nest area stays dry....

I was happy to see this because I'm a couple counties southeast of you and that meant ours wouldn't be far behind. Sure enough, two of ours showed up today. Woot! Woot!

FINALLY in Hocking County Ohio

03/29/2019 two adult females arrived in Hocking County, Ohio. We think they're returning from last year because they circled while we dropped the house and gourds to open some of the rooms. They're peeping everything out now We LOVE hearing them because it's been a log cold winter and their song mak...

Re: Upper mid-west facing two cold weeks

We're in Hocking County and are also concerned about the PM's outrunning their food supply. Our first arrival is normally closer to the end of March but last year our first arrival was on the 19th. Snow is in the forecast but we intend to get their housing up later this week.

Re: Our First Adult Male PM This Year

My, that is an awesome picture of an ASY-M, with his classic serious "look", a "frown" maybe. Still watching for my first PM down here in SE Ohio (Lebanon) - none thru 3/27/18 although there have been sighting reports all around me. Rainy, cold, even some snow last week. If successful, this ...

Re: Our First Adult Male PM This Year

Thanks all. He was still here late yesterday afternoon. It did snow all day yesterday but the ground is warm enough that the snow didn't stick. It's mostly gone this morning. I watched for the PM off and on throughout the day and caught glimpses of him going into the house. Then I started wondering...

Our First Adult Male PM This Year

2018 we saw our first PM of the year on March 19th (today). He stopped to peep the house out but I was quick enough to get a picture before he left. 2017 we saw the first one of the year on April 3rd. 2016 we saw the first of the year on March 30th. We have a winter weather advisory calling for 6" o...

Re: Two ASY Males in Hocking County OH

Strange arrival days in southeastern Ohio, and from what I am hearing, numbers seem to be down in other areas of Ohio also. Only one pair of ASY birds have shown up at this colony near Athens. (36 pairs with successful fledging last summer) Trying hard to "keep the faith" and be patient! Good luck ...

Re: Tree Swallow Question

I echo what everyone else is saying. The TS's and BB's here are immediately interested in an opening as soon as it's available and have lower housing for them. We keep our PM entrances closed until PM's arrive, and then open only a couple that face our house so we can keep better tabs on them and op...

Two ASY Males in Hocking County OH

Saw our first PMs of the season this evening. Two ASY males were on the house at 6 PM. No cavities were open so I went out to drop the house and open a couple. They flew off and haven't been back, so they musta been passing through.

So if you're north of us, you have a couple on their way "home."

Re: Newbie from Ohio

Buckeyefarmer, Great job of changing your "door" openings! This modification should really help you manage your site. I am predicting a great first year for you and your colony. Stay on top of those starlings and sparrows! I am just outside of Athens and we do not have birds as yet. I am expecting ...

Re: Finally! Back to their summer home!

That's GREAT news! We're just a titch north, so we're getting more antsy as we watch the PM's march slowly towards us. We saw three Tree Swallows on the gourd rack perches this morning and were pretty excited for the minute or two that it took to figure out what they were. No cavities are open yet s...

Best Of Luck To Everyone In 2017

It's nearly kick-off for the 2017 PM season in Hocking County Ohio. That means it's time for me to return to the PMCA forums to see how everyone is doing. My wife and I are grateful for those of you who live close by and post what's going on in your colonies. Amongst other things you give us a heads...
