Low Numbers

Have been averaging 40-45 pairs of martins and by now should have around 25-30 martins here .. We have 2 pair here and they have been here 2 weeks with no other martins. I'm sure the weather has a lot to do with that. Hopefully when the weather breaks they will start pouring in.

Re: Happy Easter from our blue birds and Martins <3

Our earliest arrival is March 7th. They are slow arriving with the bad weather this month. 2 pair so far, should have 15-20 martins here by now.

Cindy, I'm from Washington also. Can you put the babies in another nest where they are close in age they could be adopted and be fed. If not I would try the rehabber. My last martins fledged yesterday. Had 44 pair this year. Good luck with the babies.

Starling's around here are to fat to enter the crescent's on my trio's. They go for the nest box trap with the big 2 in. hole they can fit their fat @#$ threw  Was catching 2 a day for a while. At least 50 sparrow's with the spare-o-door and repeating ground trap.

Any time between 7am-10am is prime time for arrivals for my colony. I've had a few late arrivals but that 7-10 time frame is the main arrival time here.

Darryl, I had a male on the 8th and another male on the 14th. There are years when my first arrivals don't show until after the 21st so who knows? Hang in there it's early yet

JoLita, congratulation's on your arrivals. A male has been here since 3-8-15. He comes home alone every night. He arrived at least 2 weeks early. It might be another week before he sees another martin here. Good luck this year.

Earliest Arrival

My martin season starts in the record book. At 6:50 tonight an adult male arrived. He beat the record by 2 days. It's a record I thought wouldn't get beat. Just got everything up yesterday and still need to add nesting material. At least he has a cedar nest tray to sleep on. 3 other earliest arrival...

Brian, I would get a few more gourds and a house if you can. The more options for the females the better. My colony prefers houses over gourds. The gourds do get used but houses usually get picked first. Good luck.
