  • I have been over actively involved re-establishing Martins on my property for 22 years resulting in success in 2002. I have helped other landlords establish and improve colonies in this area through information sharing. I have witnessed total site abandonment through unacceptance of the tried and true practices, researched and promoted by the PMCA. and The Nature Society. Finally, through years of disappointment and yes, sadness, I never gave up but instead, learned and looked forward to each coming Spring and the arrival of the Martins, learning invaluable lessons I would be more than happy to share with any prospective landlord.

  • This has been an active portion of our lives for the past 25 years. We are presently active in this regard across this geographic area. We are proud to have mentored the ELLIS BIRD FARM to success in returning martins to this site after an absence of 18 years. The techniques used were consistant with PMCA format and our own experiences.

  • My Father was a landlord for decades in the deep South. I live in Canada now and a neighbour gave me a wooden house he never had any luck with. I have ordered the Excluder Adapter Plates to modify the house. It also looks like the apartments are 5\"x5\". Should I close some entrances and make them 5\"x10\"? Also where can I get some goards in the area. Dad used to grow them :)

  • I installed two Troyer martin houses in 2006 (July). As it was too late in the season I hoped for 2007 - unfortunatley unsuccessfully. This year I believe I have one pair of martins and am extremely concerned about the cold weather we have experienced. Can someone help me with nest checks and supplemental feeding? I don\'t want to loose my first pair please! Thanks very much.

  • I have put up a 12 unit aluminum marten house and play the dawn song regularly. the first days, I got alot of interest from blue tree swallows that landed on the house and stayed in the area a couple of days...I haven't seen them lately. the second day it was up, May 8th, I walked out onto my deck and a purple marten flew towards me. I have not had any sitings or activity at the house since. I would like to know what I could do to increase my chances of attracting purple martens. regards Nannette

  • I have put up an aluminum colony house early last spring. We have lots of open space on our country property and the house is located on a pond with nothing around the base of the pole. I think we have an ideal location. I also have a sucessful swallow colony in separte housing. Last spring I saw a few Martins investigating and so I opened a few compartments. They left and I closed the holes again because of the sparrows. I hoped they would return this year but as yet I haven't seen any. Is there something else I should be doing? Has anyone seen them in my area yet? Maybe it is to early. Conestogo is located just outside of the Kitchener/Waterloo area of Ontario, Canada. Also does anyone know where I can obtain a recording of "Dawn Song"?

  • Our martins have just arrived, and we appear to have only about 10 pairs, significantly down from approximately double that number last year. We are looking for advice on how we can continue to successfully attract Martins to our yard on the shores of Lake Erie. Any experiences you could share would be sincerely appreciated!

  • Although I would like to try to start a purple martin colony, I am uncertain about the suitability of my site. I would therefore very much appreciate advice from a mentor before I invest substantially in state of the art martin paraphernalia. The site is a rural one near Wyebridge, Ontario, south of Midland/Penetanguishene.

  • A friend constructed a martin house for us as a house-warming gift. Made to official plan. We have had starlings attempt to nest and today noticed tree swallows. How far behind the swallows are the martins? Any suggestions for successful colony?

  • I live on the shores of Lake Huron, about 60 miles from Detroit Mich. I have been trying for about 4 years to get PM and this year I finally have 2 pair nesting in the PM Grandpa House...we have a post 20' away with 4 super gourds. Until about 8 days ago there were some tree swallows in one of the gourds, the PM drove them off. I see one of the PM's going in one of the gourds often but do not think they have nested. I have to admit I'm terrified to look into the house. We at one point only had 4 apts. open , were told to open all of them, when we did we saw that there are 2 nests. NOW WHAT!! When do I expect there to be hatching...what should I be looking for? I have offered egg shells, what else? I love having them around, they are sooo busy and noisy!! I have seen one sparrow only on the top of the house. They swooped down on it and we chased it away. Any advice would be so appreciated. Many thanks.
