  • I have two SuperGourd rack colonies with 24 gourds total. For 2007 season I had 20 martin pairs and 75 babies fledged. 2008 will be my 9th year. Be hopeful – I only had 2 pair my 1st year.

  • The 08 season was my 5th one as an active landlord, and I ended up hosting 23 breeding pairs. Big fan of the natural gourd, but I do offer plastic SuperGourds and Troyer Horizontals as well. Starting with the 09 season, I will try my hand at raising my own natural gourds, so I could use advice in this area. I ride my motorcycle all over SE Ohio and northcentral WV. Would be more than happy to help out anyone I can.

  • I have been an active landlord for 5 years. Our most recent breeding season included 12 pairs with over 50 babies fledged. Housing includes a Lone Star Alamo and a SuperGourd rack. We have successfully fed in harsh weather and maintain bluebird and tree swallow houseing as well.

  • This is my second year of being a landlord and I must be doing something right because I have 6 pair this year and the 2nd year birds have not yet returned so I may get more. Last year I had 4 pair and fledged 20 babies. I would be willing to share what I know and find out what I do not know. The more people we get to care about these facinating birds the better. They bring great joy to my life.

  • Years ago we had an active colony here on the farm, but it disappeared back in the 70s. I have been trying for 4 years, and just as I gave up, 2 pairs of sub adults came and have taken up residence. Hoping to find someone locally who can help me with nest checks as I am blind, but want very much to get a solid colony established again. I am open to advice and guidance. Thank you in advance. John

  • Fascinated by these birds for years through my amish country travels. New T10 house with 4 SuperGourds in a very good location between my house, my barn and 1/2 acre pond. Will be utilizing an outdoor dawnsong recording this year (my first with housing) Would love to hear from other active landlords/mentors in the area. See purple martins every year at the pond and overhead, although not successful in finding active colony site.

  • This is my fourth year of trying to attract martins. I moved the house this year to a better location- 50 feet from the house and nearest big trees, and on the edge of our pond. I had 3 martins come and investigate in April. None of them stayed. I was playing the dawn song. What else can I do besides continue being patient? Thanks.

  • I put up a Coates Purple Martin Suite with (SREH) on May 1st of this year. This is located at our Cottage in Espyville, PA, so I can only check the activity every week or every other week. On May 15th, I believe I noticed a martin checking it out, it went from floor to floor and entered each suite, but I never did see that one return. I recently purchased a decoy, so will put that up shortly. Hopefully some young from around the area will check it out and return next year.

  • Hi, I just put up my first Martin house, it is a 14 room Lonestar. I have been reading up on Martins, trying to learn the acronyms (ie. Hosp, SY etc. ) I am having no problem attracting the starlings which I am trying to shoot with a pellet gun and tear out the nests regularly. My house is near a pond, in an open area and I think I have seen Martins close by. Thanks for any help. Rhonda

  • I have no colony experience period. I have a new pond and someone mentioned putting up a martin house for lowering bug aggraivation. So I got on line to read about them and I\'m already in love with a bird I knew nothing about just a few days before. I guess I\'d never even seen one to my knowledge. But just reading about them has made me want to invite them to live in my space. And I don\'t want to get discouraged and give up on the idea from doing the wrong things off the bat. I have a good area for a house plus water near it too. I just need some advise. Some of these houses I\'ve looked at on line are expensive I thought for a bird house. I didn\'t realize they were that pricey. Anyway, thats some about me and my martin experiece which is none. All help appreciated. Thank You, Terry

We are looking for advice on how we can continue to successfully attract Martins to our yard on the shores of Lake Erie. Any experiences you could share would be sincerely appreciated!

  • I have had a martin house up for years with no knowledge of how to attract them. The last two years I used the Dawnsong and each year I have had lookers but no keepers. This past season, I purchased a 12-unit gourd rack. I also have 8 SuperGourds and 4 natural gourds ready to go. I have noticed that each day in the skies above my site there are 8 to 10 feeding regularly. I believe my location of my gourds to be acceptable and am very excited about the opportunity of attracting martins. One of my biggest concerns is that I am a feeder of all types of birds and part of that population includes sparrows. I am not able to kill wildlife and am concerned about the proper timing of erecting houses without them being occupied too soon by undesirables. I will do anything short of extermination. I am in dire need of a mentor and am fully committed to being a good landlord.

I live within 1.5 air miles of the largest colony in the State of Ohio, that being Cunningham in Green Springs. I have read numerous books and articles, kept nest competitors away, but still no luck.

  • I had 2 pairs nest last year after 1 1/2 years. They produced 4 eggs each and 1 died each. I have a lot of problems with sparrow and some starlings and I am not sure what the best way to get rid of them. I have a sparrow trap and removed about a dozen last year. There is just too many of them. I did do a nest cleaning during the suggested time and it didn't bother them. They stayed at the house until one day they were gone. I didn't notice where they went in the area but it is my understanding that they hang around for a while until the migrate. I did get some come around the houses and check it out but I don't think it was the mating pairs. I had a 8 unit house and got another 12 unit house for my birthday in june. I put it up while the pairs were still here and they went back and forth sitting on it so I am not sure what to look for this year but I am anxious for them to arrive.

I did have 1 nest of Tree Swallows raise 4 young. I have a 12 SuperGourd setup, a 12 unit Trio house modified to 6 units with 4 SuperGourds hanging below. I plan to play the Dawnsong for 2 hours this year. This is 3 years trying. I am 68 years of age, I trust god will bless me with martins sometime in the near future. Any help I get will be much appreciated. Thanks.
