  • Some friends of mine that live on the Shrewsbury River in Monmouth Beach have a successful colony on their property that is managed by another person. They enjoy it immensely. The geology of our back yard is very similar and I think it would be a good spot for another purple martin house. Our home is located on the bluff overlooking the bay and New York City skyline. Our lower yard is cleared of trees and is adjacent to some public park area so that the flight patterns are unrestricted for several hundred yards in all directions. I would like help in choosing a house and learning how to manage it.

  • I have a large backyard that backs to a lake and have the PM house with 4 gourds under it. It is raised up about 15 feet & is 100 yards from anything around as suggested in the materials I've read. I seem to have other interested birds but haven't seen any PMs. (I keep cleaning out their nest building attempts) I do know there is a PM landlord about 2 - 3 miles away. Not sure what else to try.. Please help :)

  • We put a house up last year, but it was immediately taken over by HOSPs (which I kept evicting to no use..) I bought a trap now, so will see if I can curb them this year.. I actually saw an adult martin lingering about for 2-3 days, but it left (I guess it was probably on its way to the colony; or maybe the sparrows pushed it away..) I aim to use vocalization to boost my chances - let's see. In any case, I would like to be able to exchange info on challenges I might face and also gather tips/advice through my jorney!!

  • Hello, I would really like to get some assistance in setting up a purple martin bird house. I live next to a marsh and have an abundance of dragon flies that inhabit my yard. I believe that having a purple martin colony would cut down on the swarms of dragon flies and would serve as a great food source for the purple martin. If any mentors are interested in assisting me, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance. Shawn

  • We had a Purple Martin structure on our Corporate site, but it was not managed properly and did not have any Purple Martins nesting, only Tree Swallows. The wooden parts of the structure fell down this winter, so I am now trying to learn what needs to be done for a successful site and mainteance program. I would appreciate any and all help with this.

  • My housing was installed late June 2007. While we did see Martins fly by last summer, they did not stay to nest. As of today, May 8, we have not seen martins in our area. We have seen Martins in high numbers at our resevoir. Many are nesting about 2 miles away between our creek, the river and the bay. Starlings and swallows invaded our house. I removed them immediately. I\'ve closed the housing to keep the other birds from nesting.

  • I used to raise Cockateils so I know a little about breeding and caring for birds. I am still confused as to the date to unplug my purple martin house. (I should be receiving it in about 5 days. It is equiped with crescent holes.) One guide said fledglings are in my area from April 1st and this site says April 15th. I don't live near any body of water except we have a pool and fountains. Will this be ok? The reason I am putting up housing for Purple Martins is that we live near an egg farm and we have loads of flys that are unbearable. They will have plenty of food here. Is there a special time to bring down the house to check for nests when the parent birds aren't in or on it?

  • I am trying for the first time this year. I have a T-14 type house that is made of aluminum. I am situated about half a mile from a tributary of the Raritan River, about a mile and a half from the Great Swamp, and there is the open space of a cemetery in my backyard. I would like someone to give me advice and critique my chances of success.
