- I live in the North Hills area of Raleigh, and just hosted a first year colony in 2006. I have been interested in Martins for many years, and have been an active participant in the management of several large rural colonies. I am especially interested in bringing martin numbers back into the Raleigh area.

- I got in this about 15 years agao. I have gotton my entire family into this family project...think we are running a race to see how many we can get in our back yards now my neighbors are all into it, so I guess you can say martins are a part of our familys and homes. We look forward to having them, and really ate for them to leave. Our martins are so much like family my dogs even sit out on the porch to watch them every year. We do keep our martin houses clean from year to year. Last year they seemed to not come home as soon, but a least they stayed around a little bit longers.

- I have had a purple martin house up for three years, First I put up a lonestar house. The first year I had nothing. The second year I added 4 super gourds, and also added the dawnsong.I had two pair, with nine babies total. All survived. The third year I had three pair, all went well until a black snake came up the poll and even got past my predator guard. I lost three babies in one gourd. I added another guard on the poll and also wrapped barb wire around the bottom. This year I have added the bed and breakfast, I had two adult males who came early last year and died because of a week of raining cold weather. hopefully this year will be better

- First year landlord! Only one pair but am researching getting myself ready for next year. I\'ve had a ton of activity from other pairs this week. 4-6 at a time flying around checking out the other gourds. I\'m wondering how late in the season people have had nests.

- I manage the Wild Bird dept of a Garden Center and after studying the feasability, I would like to begin a colony. I have permission to use a neighbor\'s 30 acre farm. I have access to many brands of martin housing through my distributor~ which are the best? Through store birding seminars and by my learning/doing I hope to encourage customers to become involved. I have a lot of head knowledge :)but no hands-on experience~I need a mentor\'s wisdom!

- I have been working on a National Wildlife Habitat for the past 8 years. The animals seemed satisfied a long time ago. We are moving out of the city to a small farm. My son who is twelve is extremely interested in mosquito eaters. We have a bat house now. He would like to have both bats and purple martins. Is this possible? What is the best way to start? My son is almost 13 and extremely interested in nature. I want to keep his experiences as positive as possible. Teenage years are hard enough. We have done a lot of wildlife rescue with our local rescuers, my son is very interested in a wildlife career. Anything anyone can do to set us on the right path would be greatly appreciated. - In the evening I am noticing swallow-like birds flying over the pasture and pond. I can tell that a few are barn swallows (severly forked tail) but others have very dark head/back and buff undersides; others solid dark underneath and slightly forked tail. I would love to be a landlord and believe I have an excellent site for martins (wires, structures, feeding locations, etc). I need some help getting started. It's August now and I'm not sure if it's the right timing for martins to be in the area.

- We have open farmed fields next to us, the Nansemond River, pastures for our horses, and had visitor martins the last two years who did not like our plastic houses. This year I went to a Coates WaterEdge 8 unit 6x6x12 nest area size all aluminum house, placed on the other side of the property from the barn and house. I have been reading all the internet info and think we are going in the right direction. My veterinarian has long-term colonies and has been a big help and said I may have trouble because martins do not like sharing feeding space with our barn swallows and I may need more houses to attract more birds. This is a long-held dream of ours to have purple martins and we want to succeed. Any help will be deeply appreciated!!!!!

- I have just erected a Purple Martin House. It is a Heath 18 room aluminum house. I did not know what to buy and saw one being erected like it on the web. I also have 2 decoys on the house. I saw an adult male and an adult female in my yard so I opened 3 holes. They showed no interest in the house. The next day I came home and a sparrow was building in one of the holes. I took care of the Sparrow and cleaned out the nest. I started playing the dawnsong yesterday April 11, 2006. Any help would be most appreciated. When should I expect subadults to be in my area. There is a colony about a half mile through the woods. Is it possible to attract adult martins to a new nest. If so, how? Thank you, Mark Lawing

- I've enjoyed my grandfather's Purple Martins for years at his house in the Outer Banks of NC, but I've never set up housing myself. This year (if its not too late), my son and I plan on setting up our first Purple Martin house as part of a Cub Scout project. I've wanted to do it for a long time, but when my son's Boy's Life magazine came with a simple plan to build a Purple Martin house, we finally decided to do it.

- Recently purchased a beach house (Pelican's Perch) on North Carolina's Outer Banks near Corova. Access is 4WD only and 7.5 miles up the beach from the paved road in Carolla. Our neighbors to the south of us have two active PM houses with many birds. Being a PM landlord always interested me and this beach setting got me motivated. Spring of 2005, Kathy, Christine and I erected two houses (last week in April) and immediately had martins peeping in and entering the houses. We all live in Maryland so we are unable to see our martins on a regular basis. This just kills me, but I know they will be an interesting addition to our cottage for our renter's from April - July. Our PM houses sit approx. 30 feet from our hot tub and pool. Great way to view the birds and we love hearing their soft chirping sounds, gliding and soaring in the early moring beach sunlight. Evenings find the birds swooping down near the eves of our roof on the top deck, gathering dragonflys and nats, only a few feet away. Without sounding like an advertisement, our house sleeps 15 and is a great place to spend a week on a remote Atlantic ocean beach in the midst of many purple martins.
Hope to hook up with other landlords in NC
Thanks and good luck,
Brent
