- I have had martins for 10 years, my father got them here and now i have continued what he started. We have about 100 pair that come every year. They get here about April 15th and they left the first week of September.

- I have two SuperGourd rack colonies with 24 gourds total. For 2007 season I had 20 martin pairs and 75 babies fledged. 2008 will be my 9th year. Be hopeful – I only had 2 pair my 1st year.

- This colony has been active since 1998. We have two 12 hole hexagonal metal houses and 4 gourds. We used a Purple song CD the first year to get them to visit the site. We had approximately 90 fledglings in 2005. We are willing to help out any new comers that need help starting colonies or improving their martin colonies. Feel free to ask any martin questions.
Attracting Purple Martins and managing a colony does require committment and work, but it is a very rewarding experience that will give you years on enjoyment.

- I have T-12, trio, and supergourd houses all set and ready. My colony keeps growing and thriving. I live at the lake and when people see my houses and birds they ask how they too can be landlords and I love to help them get going. More houses are going up every year and the population around here is growing---yea! I am located about 30 miles South of Jackson) The hardest thing I have to do is to trap the sparrows---which works! I would love to be able to help anyone that would like any help or support.

- I've been a Purple Martin landlord since 1993. My thriving colony nests in
SuperGourds and fledged more than 200 young last season. During bad weather,
my martins eat scrambled eggs from a platform feeder. I would love to help
establish more martin colonies in Michigan.

- We have been blessed for 4 years now with the extraordinary Purple Martin. We began with a 12 room aluminum house which was occupied with 2 mating pairs the 1st year. We added 4 plastic gourds beneath the house the 2nd year and nearly all nest cavities filled. The 3rd year we erected a gourd rack and the tenants moved in as quickly as the gourds were hung. I will add 6 more gourds this year making a total of 28 nest cavities. I would be delighted to correspond with other landlords and to share my experiences with anyone who may be interested.

- Newly established site in south county Monroe. 5 pair in 2000 using 6 gourds and 6-box aluminum housing (also maintain active bluebird trail). Eliminated sparrows and starling to establish site. Dawnsong was helpful. Frequent removal of competitors' nests. Relocated BB box to reduce tree swallow interest in gourds. Send email for assistance around south county area.

- I have not signed up for membership yet, but plan to do so within the next few days with the payment. I have put up a HEATH Aluminum 18-ROOM Purple Martin House with the 15 Foot Extension Pole. I put a little mud in the rooms and two decoys. We built only 12 of the rooms (2 Floors) for this year. We figured we would not need the whole 3-Floors until next year. Plus it was a pain in the butt to build!! Very expensive too!! I find it a bit flimsy than what I expected. Can I put caulking around the cracks? I have only TWO holes open up right now. I just put it up this past weekend. I have not yet noticed anything. I think I have seen a few Purple Martins nearby feeding, but not sure. I have a great location for the House, as far as I can tell from everything I have read. I am very excited, but fear that I may have put up the house too late? Will I get any residents this year? Please will someone be my Mentor? Thanks! Email me or call me. Deborah Nicke

- I have always wanted to house purple martins and now have the room to do so. I've been preparing for next season (2007) by just learning all I can on the net. It would be nice to have a mentor nearby to help me do this right. I also have family members nearby who would like to be landlords as well. From what I can tell on some of the maps, there are no colonies in my area- so this might be tough.

- Was succesful years ago with wooden 12 hole house on lake shore. Moved 4 miles away on a wildlife lake and used same house plus new aluminum house and no luck. Have 25 acres on shore of 400 acre lake. Good spot on empty lot next to house, no trees and elevated ground, pond attached to lot. Have seen very few PM in Mn. in last few years. Fishing resorts up north are even at a loss as to what happened to them. Have plans for T14 house. Asking for suggestions... pole, round vs cresent..etc.

- I have observed a friend of mine with Purple Martins in Ponca City, Oklahoma and am interested in getting started. I just ordered my first house and pole today. I live in town, but have a large expanse of river that runs next to my property. I realize I am probably too late this year, but read that they may come as late as June. Any help would be appreciated.

- Our martins have just arrived, and we appear to have only about 10 pairs, significantly down from approximately double that number last year. We are looking for advice on how we can continue to successfully attract Martins to our yard on the shores of Lake Erie.
Any experiences you could share would be sincerely appreciated!

- Just put up a 16 apartment house today in backyard. My father build it to specs from a pattern in bird book. Have it placed correctly, I think. It is very heavy(wood) on a wooden post about 14 ft. up and has a winch to lower it, but will probably take 2 people to lower it. I do not think that I will be able to maintain the house on a weekly basis and since it can only be lowered horizontally by tilting down to ground, couldn't do it when birds are in there, could I? Also, I have plugged up the holes with paper cups and will keep checking the arrival maps to see when I need to open the house. I need any additional help I can get!! Thank you.

- My father and brother have active colonies in Michigan and Florida respectively. I just purchased a 24 gourd housing with pole. I plan on raising it up the first week in May for the subadults that are predicted to show up then thru mid June. I am not aware of any PM enthusiasts in my area and trying to locate someone that could share some helpful info with me.

- 2005 starts my 11th year trying to attract Martins. 2003 saw 7 birds at my site but no keepers. I currently have a super Gourd system and a T-14 in place and will erect yet another T-14 this spring. I have tried everything known to man and no luck. Would love some help from a landlord in the area.

- I put up my 1st house 2 years ago. Last year aroung the end of May I gave up and let the Sparrows have it. They no sooner had their babies and Two Martins showed up for a fight. I could not kill the young babies but vowed not to let that happen this year. This year I have kept the house clear of Sparrows. End of May two or three Martin Scouts show up. Leave for a week. Came in around 1st of June and have claimed the house. Currently see 3 young Martins. Some nesting material is being collected? I am so excited. They are so beautiful. I want them to stay.

- Hello! We have had a Martin house in our backyard for 3 summers now and I have chased sparrows away every year. I have the plugs in, but when I take them out, they are immediately spotted by the sparrows. Last year, we saw our first scout, but the darn sparrows had put pieces of grass in each hole, and they never came back.

- I have 12 supergourd rack and a 12 compartment trio house. I'm using the dawn CD and 4 decoys. This is my second year (2000), but 1st year of knowing more about what I'm doing, thanks to the PMCA information. So far I have seen 1 sy male on May 6th of this year (2000). We have barn swallows and live on farm near creek and have large farm ponds within 1/2 mile of our location. So we are patiently waiting. We enjoyed the one visitor, about 8:30AM.

- I built and erected at T-14 martin house last spring. Didn't get it up until mid-June, however, and got no tenants. A few starlings checked it out, but none was interested -- probably because of the oblong holes. We are located inside the city of Detroit about 1/2 mile from the Detroit River. The house is located in the front yard with lots of open space around it.

- This will be our 3rd year with housing up. We have an aluminum 12 compartment house that I converted to 6 larger compartments plus a gourd rack with 6 Supergourds. We also use the dawnsong tape. Our site may be marginal due to trees and the availability of more suitable housing around a nearby lake. We see martins flying overhead but have not had any at our housing.
