  • I am putting up a new wooden 8 compartment house on a fairgrounds in Unity, Maine. The site consists of 60+ acres of open fields with managed and unmanaged forest on 3 sides. The house will be about 18\' off the ground in a location that fits the requirements described on the purplemartin.org website. There are bluebirds and barn swallows nesting in existing boxes and barns already. I\'m curious whether there are any active colonies in Waldo County or if anyone else is trying to attract them to the area.

  • I live on a 30 acre horse farm with a large area for martins. I believe there is an active colony in Belgrade and Livermore, Maine. I will be attempting to contact the colony owners and try to get some help setting up my colony. I am thinking of buying a 12 gourd array and an extension pole for them. But I am curious as the relative merits of the various house types. I have read/heard that gourd arrays discourage starlings and sparrows. Is that true?
