Re: Can hawks make purple martins shun a house they used for years?

If you don't have a good baffle/guard on the pole, and netting above that - you might have had snake predation. Snakes climb metal or wooden poles with ease, and clean out martin houses, eating eggs, nestlings, and adults - you won't even know it happened until one year no martins return. House Spar...

Re: Reward or natural selection?

I think they would hang on, by a very slender thread - martins (several pairs, aka, a colony) nest in cavities in Sabal Palm trees at Orlando Wetlands Park near Christmas, Florida. And we have no idea how many martins east of the Rockies nest in non-birdhouse situations, but enough to keep the speci...

Re: Reward or natural selection?

Saying they are back "too soon" does not make sense to me, we might as well talk about punishing the winter weather for staying "too long", if you get my drift. A huge spring blizzard in the early 1980s killed martins all across the midwest, thousands of them - the martins have no way of knowing wha...

Re: Pest strips for sparrows

To expand a bit on what John Miller says (sending you some sunshine, John :-) ). Some folks use glue traps (the kind designed to catch mice) to capture house sparrows, but it's a very risky endeavor, same as sticky glue strips. For people who think martins won't enter a cavity that sparrows are nest...

Re: Disappointed in PM houses and You?

Bird Brain, I have to disagree with you about using aluminum houses in the southern states. But aluminum houses should be utilized by Northern landlords. It just gets too hot in the South for aluminum housing, even if painted white. A few hours of Summer Southern sunshine will cook any bird that liv...

Re: When to use nesting material

The PMCA did a study at their research site, offering martins their choice of a clean, empty room OR a room with an old, dirty martin nest left intact. Martins preferred rooms with old nests, despite the presence of nest parasites like mites and fleas that overwintered in the old nests. The reasonin...

Re: Are egg shells really necessary?

The martins will go collect calcium on their own, yes, but landlords can give them a hand by supplying crushed oyster shell (pullet size is smaller pieces, I believe) on a platform. I once saw martins picking at the chalk used to mark a baseball diamond - they wanted that calcium! Martins will pick ...

Some info here, check links at bottom: https://www.purplemartin.org/purple-martins/competitors/64/non-native/ You'll need to be able to tell the difference between House Sparrows and our native sparrows, too. Only House Sparrows will build in a martin house or gourd (our many species of native sparr...

Re: Purple Martins are back! Part II

our first home martin showed up yesterday evening here in Corpus Christi - adult male settled into gourd for a good rest, John said he looked tired. He went off to feed this morning. He got here just ahead of a front, today is cooler and breezy, cloudy, but warm enough for feeding.

Purple Martins are back!

Yippee! It's martin time again in Corpus Christi! :-) A friend was helping me fill and raise gourd rack at South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center here, about 10 minutes from home. As we raised the gourds - martins! Heard first, then saw 4, maybe 5, circling overhead & talking to us. I was bus...

Re: Standing on the shoulders of those before us

Perhaps the saddest experiences of failed mentoring, though that's not really the right term, are those where the martins pay the price - landlords who will not control house sparrows/starlings, with result that eggs, nestlings, and adult martins are destroyed. Landlords who say "we don't have those...

Re: cleaning out martin houses

Mites and bird fleas can survive all winter, even up north, waiting for their hosts to return. Cleaning out old nests is a good idea, for that and other reasons.

I sometimes trapped starlings in pmca's repeating bait trap using suet cakes as bait, placing trap on ground near feeders they were raiding.

Re: Cleaning gourds

What kind of gourds, natural or plastic? No need for traction strips in natural gourds. Many southern landlords add elbow vents - if your location gets hot & humid, it wouldn't hurt. Painting interior black can lead to problems if paint peels off and does not really do anything to increase nesting s...

Re: Martins in Melbourne, FL

Bee Martins is an old name, but it's not our Purple Martins, it's Eastern Kingbirds - they are flycatchers that will eat bees, but they do not nest in bird houses. I think folks got different birds mixed up, based on colloquial names and similar appearances.

Yippee! I always look forward to seeing your reports each year  I am glad the martins are not due here in Texas just yet, too much to do! But by the time they get here, I will be whining 'where are they?' Happy martin season to you and Diane.

Re: Sparrow Vs. Martin Strength

One thing to keep in mind with an entrance that involves pushing aside a flap, is feather wear. Adults going in & out repeatedly could suffer excess feather wear from the friction/drag against flap. Feathers on back of head, neck, body are not crucial flight feathers but they do provide insulation. ...
