Re: When To Check Gourds??

Purpleman, You are getting good advice from some experienced landlords! It sounds like you are on your way to establishing a colony. An exciting time for sure. My advice would go along with what others have posted so far. There is really no need to be running your nest box up and down as soon as you...

Re: Concerned

phldave, During our very cold weather last week, I finally had success getting my birds "trained" to catch flipped crickets and/or large meal worms, so I understand what you are going through. I have been trying to provide supplemental feeding to distressed early spring arrivals for the last few yea...

Re: Concerned

phdave, I am not having any luck with supplemental feeding either. I have tried flipping crickets, meal worms, and scrambled eggs the past 3 seasons, with very near zero success. I also have B&B trays up in the middle of the colony. On the food trays, the only birds I ever see feeding there are blue...

Re: Cold Lethargic Martins perched on their racks are easy pickins for hawks unfortunately

pmlover, easier said than done. My cricket flipping , meal worm flipping, and scrambled eggs along with crickets on the B&B have been eaten by blue birds and an occasional starling, but very little luck with the couple of martins that are still alive. Going to try again tomorrow, but am having so li...

Re: crickets and meal worms

Tengai, have been flipping crickets, meal worms and scrambled eggs to the couple of birds that I have still alive, with very little luck. I have also tried placing crickets and meal worms in the tunnel intrances to my gourds, as well as placing food in the B & B trays. Blue birds and an early yellow...

Re: Fair weather.

Frosty, I am down near Athens with zero birds at my colony so far! :-( I had a couple of ASY birds stop in approx. two weeks ago, but they vanished before the weather got really bad. I was going to try to do some supplemental feeding but they didnt stay around long enough for me to even try to train...

Re: Iowa weather forecast stinks.

Doug, Dave We are having the same problems with the weather over here in southern Ohio. I had a few adult birds stop at my colony approx 10 days ago, but they were just passing through. I have zero birds to flip crickets at. This season is shaping up to be the worst since I established the colony. O...

Re: Just had success flipping crickets

SMJohnson, I am beginning to worry that the owl and hawk problem that I have had is going to have an effect on my colony this year. Right now I am placing the blame on the terrible weather we have been experiencing. I have 28 Troyer tunnels, both styles. I also have hawk/owl guards on my two T-14's....

Re: Just had success flipping crickets

Ohio weather is not good start to the season. Temp down in the low 20's last night, currently only 33. My early arrivals last week have dissapeared. I can only hope that they have found another colony that is having luck flipping. I have crickets and meal worms ready, but no birds to try to "train"....

Curious as to what brand you bought. I am in the market for a new air gun and would be interested to hear from Purple Martin folks who might have some strong reccomendations.

Re: Martins get a warm welcome in South Salem, Ohio

Wow birdbrat! I am over in Athens, and hope that my birds are still farther south where it is warmer! After seeing your report I traveled over to Jackson, O where there is a "super colony" at Four Mile Greenhouse to see if they have any birds as yet. No birds in Jackson yesterday afternoon. Your bir...

Mixed feelings about this sighting in South Salem so early. I hope my birds are holding off someplace down south for a couple of weeks !!

Re: Disappointed in PM houses and You?

Martinstudent, your experience is sadly repeated over and over by wannabe landlords from coast to coast. The first mistake is usually purchase of relatively cheap plastic houses that still have round holes, and multiple nest cavities that are way too small. Those houses are usually sold with cheap t...

Re: Open some or all cavities

The best advice I ever got was from a friend with a succesful colony when he told me to follow arrival information on the Purple Martin Conservation Association website, and open up your nests as birds are getting closeer to your location. The arrival map is awesome, and very accurate! As you are wa...

Amen Louise! I agree with your opinion and findings on providing some pine straw as prenesting material for arriving martins.

I am planning to switch from egg shells to crushed oyster shells for convenience sake this year. I am curious to see if I notice any improvement versus the crushing and preparing egg shells!

Carlton, this is a great story of major contributions to our P.M's ! I hope your story will encourage others around the country to establish a satellite colony in their area, or encourage experienced landlords to mentor "wannabe's" !

Amazing that martins are already arriving at our southern landlords ! We are having a seriously tough winter after 3 very mild winters here in southeastern Ohio. It is exciting to hear about the birds moving into south Texas and south Fla. !

Belpre-Gary, I am with you on hoping that these birds can survive the next couple of days. The temps are down into the low 30's last night, and it will be cold and wet again today and tonight. I plan to try to "flip crickets" later today if it quits raining, and tomorrow as it begins to warm up. All...

Re: Two ASY Males in Hocking County OH

Strange arrival days in southeastern Ohio, and from what I am hearing, numbers seem to be down in other areas of Ohio also. Only one pair of ASY birds have shown up at this colony near Athens. (36 pairs with successful fledging last summer) Trying hard to "keep the faith" and be patient! Good luck t...
