Re: Presque Isle Roost in Erie PA

Any updates on the Presque Isle Roost? Hopefully the martins are starting to use it. We would hope that a couple of GHO's would not force them to go elsewhere! I still have two martins spending the night. I believe they are from two different nesting pairs, since they have been using two different g...

Re: Presque Isle Roost in Erie PA

Hello, The roost was disappointing. They estimated only about 1 to 2,000 birds at the roost. They could hear 4 GHO's hollering from different areas. Andy Troyer thought that it could have been a pair of parents and two young owls. The question is can 4 owls keep a whole roost from developing which n...

Re: New fledges

Hi Toy, I hope the young in this last nest all fledge. I hope that you end up having a pretty good year overall! I still have 7 nests with 25 young at 4 different colonies here in northwest PA. They range from 6 days old to 24 days old. It is pretty lonely for these martins at these sites, since mos...

Re: Presque Isle Roost in Erie PA

The roost should be on the upswing, and should last another week or two. I may be able to post an update once Andrew Troyer sees the roost tonight.

I'll let you know what he says tomorrow!

Re: Presque Isle Roost in Erie PA

Thanks Joe for the update.

I know of a group of people headed up to Beach 11 and the roost tomorrow night. I was going to head up this evening to meet an Amish landlord from Indiana, PA, but that fell through. I'll try and get up there another time.

Presque Isle Roost in Erie PA

Does anyone have any information on how the Purple Martin roost is progressing? I would think that it is growing each day! Any estimates on the number of birds there yet?

Thanks in advance!

Re: How long to hold my breath in SE PA?

To all of you wannabe's. KEEP TRYING and HANG IN THERE. I was trying since 2005 in northwest PA and had one pair in 2012. I didn't have any nesters again until last year. Two pairs of SY birds and 2-3 SY bachelor males. They all showed up within 48 hours of each other. This year, I had three ASY mal...

Re: Good year for SY's after a late start.

Flyin-Lowe, Glad to hear that you are finally getting some nesting birds. If we only knew what the key is to get them to be interested in our sites. It seemed that most landlords had a pretty good year with fledging last year, so hopefully a lot of wannabe landlords are now getting their colonies st...

Re: Subadult males

In most cases, these Sub Adult males that are bachelors this year will return to your colony as ASY males. They do develop site fidelity, even though they do not nest with a female. Many colonies have been started this way. Hope he is able to pull in a female to start your colony, but that doesn't g...

Re: Weather pattern :(

Hi everyone, Am I to assume that everyone feels that we should be seeing more Second Year birds showing up? I too have more SY females than males at this time, but it would be nice to have more arrive! My personal colony in Northwest PA, Pymatuning area is doing great. Went from 2 pair and 3 Subbie ...

Re: Sub Adults Arriving Here in PA

Doug, thanks for your updates! I had two pairs last year and 2-3 subbie males hanging around. This year, as of last night, we had 3 pairs spending the night. All 3 males are ASY, 2 of the 3 females are ASY. This morning, those birds that Doug was talking about showed up at our colony in Espyville. W...

Re: Sooner / Later

Dave, I have been trying since 2005. I had a lot of visitors during those years, and several attempts at martins nesting, but those failed due to a house sparrow chasing the pair away and weather related deaths. I had one pair in 2012, and finally 2 nesting pairs in 2016, along with 3 subbie males. ...

Re: Hawk Gets Martin

Graue, Not sure if the hawks that are attacking your martins are coming from the same direction, but if they are is there a tree or something that could be removed to allow more open space around the martin housing so that the martins have more visibility? It could also be true that right now you ha...

Re: Our trip to Martin Spectacular

Thanks for the update Ray. It's too bad the birds have moved farther inland from the channel. We all can remember the great show that we had last year which was noted in the Update magazine in an article by Allen Jackson. I heard you had a good year raising martins. That's great and just think how m...
