THEN Today! brand new hatchlings.
Waaay too hot here in Oklahoma. Latest Fledge I've had before was August 8th so I know it can be done.

Re: new eggs! question

I do pretty regular nest checks, prob avg about every 4 days, then when time to do 10 day nest checks I take them down almost every day to change out individual nests. I did a nest check on 6/2 bt it was relatively col and had been raining earlier. About 6 adults stayed in nests so I only checked th...

new eggs! question

I thought I was well into the season wth over 270 eggs/babies in 3 gourd racks of 24 each. Oldest babies about 14 days old. I checked all three racks on 5/30. Today I lowered them and had 3!!!!, yes three nests with new eggs that were empty on 5/30. It makes me wonder if these re refugees from anoth...

predator question

I had a nest with 6 eggs and I checked the nest 5 days later and there are no eggs and no egg shells. To me that means snake. I have never been able to get netting to work right even after people send me plans and diagrams. I do have the metal predator guards. Last year I had a nest with 7 eggs, wen...

Re: Question re decoys and Hawks

Fowler I got a dozen dove decoys and set them all over. One day I was out and a coopers flew up and hit one I had put on the stockade fence. He hit it twice and then sat next to it while I walked to about 10 feet from him. As he flew off he went toward another I had put on a blackberry bush. Thanks ...

Re: Sparrow woes and observations

DebA one night I flushed out a female and as I was "taking care of her" the male flew out. I have NEVER had a male be the only one in there. This year I went out at dusk and wasn't pitch black dark, I got female but left my net up there and poked some more and a Martin flushed from neighboring compa...

Re: Purple Martin Occupancy Levels In My Colony

I have 3 gemini with 72 gourds but I stop there. I have the highest appearance of occupancy, meaning most nest have a hollowed out spot and some green leaves in my pine straw. Only 18 nests with eggs so far. Interestingly the lowest number of HOSP nests I've ever had which is 5 currently. Only two n...

Sparrow woes and observations

I've mentioned on here before one of my methods for trapping sparrows in gourds. I lower my houses enough to reach with small ladder Wait till dark. Place a bag or net(now I have a great butterfly net) over entrance and run a screwdriver or wire up drain hole in bottom of gourd and sparrow flys righ...

Question re decoys and Hawks

I read Louise article about hawks in the mag. She said "move them so the hawks don't get used to them". I only have about a dozen birds now so put up 4 decoys and two were spun around upside down after the first day. I have a lot of hawks and a two acre yard with a lot of trees. How often would you ...

Moving a rack question

I have a 24 count gourd rack Troyer horiz that is probably the birds favorite rack out of three. Its a standard 6/level rope pulley. I just got first two scouts today. I want to move it about 2 feet over and replace it with a Gemini. Since I am late do you think it would still be ok? As long as I do...

I have tunnels and I guess you don't get the kind of driving rains we get. I have standard Bo 11s and troyer horizontels with the tunnels sold with them.
Out of 72 gourds I would say 5 were completely dry because the angles were just right to the wind.

I had a single trio for years and expanded it from 12- 6X6 by drilling a hole and making them 6- 6X12. I think a bigger compartment makes them happy and prob increases survival but not sure it "attracts" them. When I added a 24 gourd Gemini Rack I really started getting some numbers of martins. Now ...

question about wet nests with eggs

I had terrible storms go through and have only a few nests with eggs. I'm at the stage where most have one or two. only two or three with 4. In past when a driving thunderstorm came through I would change out nests to try to keep babies warm and alive. Question is eggs? I would think hypothermia wou...

Had two birds on ground and couldn't catch one, he popped under fence and by the time I went around fence he was gone. Another was concussed I believe. Lesson learned from huge OK storm

been a landlord for 20 years and still hadn't learned this lesson. HAVE EXTRA STUFF! Had a horrible hail storm that killed several birds and wounded couple more and my gourds look like a gang of pellet gun wielding 12 year olds had a shoot out in my back yard. I have about two extra porches and two ...
