Re: Survival in bad weather

It's been one for the books IMO but we may have made it through here in N Alabama. I had put all the crickets I could source locally into the gourds two nights ago and yesterday evening as I was putting in scrambled eggs I noticed all the crickets were gone except from one gourd. This AM I put in mo...

Re: Supplemental Feeding Frustration !!

I am gonna put scrambled eggs in each gourd this evening and also tomorrow AM. It will frost tonight and there are very few bugs. I mowed all my grass (a bunch) and had hardly any insect., but the hard core resident barnies and TSs were there getting whatever bugs I could stir up. There were also a ...

Re: Concerned

I removed the eggs yesterday. They were cold. This pair of barnies are real pros. I think this is their 3rd year but it may be longer. They had 2 broods last year for 7 total fledglings. This year they widened their nest so they may have big plans. The PMs were pretty active last evening. I don't se...

Re: Tree swallows nesting in my Martin gourds?

What size or type holes are you using? My place is overrun with TS and that's not a bad thing IMO. I would love to use some of the extra gourds I have around to put up for TS, but they never seem to take to a gourd I dangle from a tree. So far I have not observed a TS go into a SREH porch gourd.

Re: Concerned

Well, 3 $10 jars of dried crickets from flukers at petco later... those didn't go very far in 40 gourds. One jar had LIVE INSECTS in it. I hope those gourds have enough seven. There were 3 dead ASY males. Two were recent, probably from last night or the night before. One in the "old neighborhoo...

Re: Concerned

I hope this terrible spring has dealt the last blow of cold weather. I have seen a second pair of barnies get in the nest with a pair for the night. My barnies have 2 or 3 eggs in their nest that are probably dead. Do I remove them? The PMs have come and gone now several times with the cold wind, an...

Re: When to expect martin nesting in NE Alabama

I don't think the teenagers have arrived just yet so there is still time for this year. Did you "pre-nest" the gourds with some pine straw so they have a nice place to start out in?

This has been a terrible spring in N AL but hopefully they survive and thrive.

Re: Gourd Seeds

It is still too early to be putting plants/seeds in the ground around here in N AL. Some will start theirs in little pots with potting mix indoors or in a green house and transplant. Nowadays I just till my patch and they volunteer. I have pulled volunteer sprouts that were 6" deep in the soil....

Re: Storms

North Alabama was hit with wind, rain and hail, but worse is this is the third cold spell since the ASYs have come in. I will need a THIRD scout report cause mine had to leave again. It is very windy, cold, and no bugs to be seen. Also, this wind has convinced me that the 3/8 rod method of hanging g...

Re: Terrible spring for PMs in North Alabama

I have a ton of gourds that you can make into very fine housing. I will PM you my phone number. The ASYmales are coming in and a few hardy ASY females. The widow of my buddy Darryl called today and said she has PMs at the gourds I put up in his spot. You have a great start if you have scouts.

Re: Gourd Seeds

Hi. I don't get on the internet regurlarly but I sent 2 different gourd source seeds - and when I went to the PO to send them (sat) they said it was way overkill. One gourd has a ton of seeds. Goood luck. They like natural gourds woth S&K porches better than big bo V2 plastic gourds. Use lots of...

Terrible spring for PMs in North Alabama

There has been a real tug-of-war between the southern bug laden breezes and the cold northern fronts and the wind. My first sighting was 2/16 when a cold front (that would be the northern wind) was coming in. They were barely keeping up and still tried to glide in some bugs between trees). It was ni...

Re: Gourd Seeds

Since my address is already out there I will extend this offer to anyone else on the forum that wants to take a stab at growing their own gourds. You get a padded envelope, put on your address and enough postage to get it back to you with seeds, and stuff it in another envelope and mail it to me. I'...

I'll call when I get a chance. Wouldn't it be nice to see the barnies migrating on a report? Mine haven't showed up yet.

Re: Gourd Seeds

Mail me a stamped padded post office envelope at: Chris Barber 437 Will Raby Road Toney, AL 35773 I don't use email anymore thanks to yahoo. The seeds are from gourds my late buddy Darrel developed over the years. There is not enough interest in growing nice gourds to sell them, and once a person ma...

I can't log into the scout report. Had my first sighting 2/16 but for sure my first stayer is an ASY female sighted first on 2/21. And yesterday she had a big ASY male with her.

Please add my report. Toney, AL 35773

Re: Gourd Seeds

Send me a PM with your address and I'll send you seeds that make really nice shaped gourds. Caution... I grew nothing but gourds in my melon patch and the next year (last), I had a ton of volunteer gourd plants come up after tilling to where my friend didn't want to bother planting corn. Now I have ...

Re: Do tree swallows nest in colonies

TS and PMs get along just fine. The TS have no interest in the PM gourds as long as you also have a place for them to go. I have them both at my place as well as a bunch of barnies, with some bank swallows coming around later in the season to join in. It's all good. I believe TS and PMs migrate toge...
