Re: EGG ABANDOMENT ?

I had several gourds on the same rack that had eggs left behind. Someone suggested it could have been a failed 2nd batch. I haven't checked my gourds since the last birds fledged. They will stay up a while longer though. There are some that come by, maybe just remembering before they leave or passer...

Bye bye birdies

The last gourd with 2 stragglers fledged yesterday. They must be roosting somewhere cause only a dozen were around this morning.

Have a safe trip south guys!

Re: Just when I had plans

I have S&K porches / crescent openings on my gourds. There has been a very persistant and now very elusive starling that can breach the S&K crescents. I have already removed several nests, thought I had shot the bird with my 20gs shotgun, and yet today I notices a starling on the grass that ...

Re: Insecticides for mites

I put a little seven dust in the pine straw I pre-nest with. I don't think PMs have mites, but they get them from the trash birds that invade. I watch one ASY male splashing pretty aggressively into my pond and wondered if he was trying to shed mites.

Heck, I suspect they may not even stay "married" overnight for all the gourd hopping that goes on at sundown.

Re: No Picture But A Video

I watched a few birds fight during an evening swarm over the pond. Two of them plopped right down into the water and quickly got back to flying. Good thing cause there are some really big bass in the pond. I keep waiting to see a bass take a bird as it scoops in for a drink or bath.

Re: Good Morning all. Any Athens, Al landlords on the forum?

A friend of mine here has 3 gourds that the TS are nesting in. He uses 2" round holes in natural gourds, and as can be expected, he is fighting starlings. But he also has a bunch of PMs. You should have all your gourds open IMO, as the PMs ( and TS's) are nest building actively at my place here...

Re: Help - inheriting a colony...

Congrats! I am sure that with those 4 visitors you will have a season. Is there open (ie not surrounded by trees) water nearby? They love having a place to drink, bathe (they splash on the water while flying), and eat skeeters.

Re: Good Morning all. Any Athens, Al landlords on the forum?

Tree swallows are very compatible with PMs, as long as they have a place to be. Mine are already pairing up and choosing the bluebird boxes I put up for them. TS and PM fly in the same airspace at my place and get along just fine. You should have your PM housing fully opened up by now as my birds ar...

Re: SREH vs round

Good job and I assume you meant you shot the starling. That is the only way when one figures out how to get in/out of a SREH. They are smart and soon figure out we don't like them. And they will plum fill up a gourd with their trashy nest, and make mites.

Re: Had an OP Ed in the paper speaking out against...

You could point out that dragonfly larvae are huge predators of small fish fry, and that keeping them in control is beneficial. We had huge winds lately and the PMs were "on the deck" about 1 foot off the grass eating up the misquito-looking thiings that are flying around here now. They ar...

Re: Instant Colony Today!! I'm more Amazed!

At my place they came in with the southern air flow and filled up the rest of the unoccupied gourds. I believe the teenagers have arrived since this morning there is mayhem and fighting. My friend a few miles away who had very few so far experienced an invasion the same day and now has plenty. I wou...

Re: OMG, OMG, OMG It just happened to me!

I have one female starling that can get into S&K crescent gourds. Even though I cleaned out the trash they put in the gourd this one has picked out, it rebuilt. I pulled out the trash and 3 blue eggs last weekend. This one will really be trouble if I can't shoot it.

Re: Tree Swallow Question

The TS in my yard do not bother the PMs at all. Sometimes they lounge on the racks but I have not observed one trying to get into a gourd. The TS have their own 1 1/2" round hole gourds on dead trees nearby.

I have a pletheria of TS around and they are no issue regarding the PM gourds. I have no idea where they are sleeping at night but it isn't in the gourds. I do have some smallish 1 1/2" boxes that were supposed to be for bluebirds but I don't see any interest in them. And my barnie showed up ye...

Re: Tree Swallows in central Iowa

I have about 6 TSs that are hanging around regularly and do not seem interested in the gourds. Then in the evening there are maybe 30 of them swarming around before they leave for the night. First year of this phenomenon. No barnies yet, but they were the ones who came into the yard at sunset for &q...

Re: gourd seeds

Pollenating with a swab is a great idea. BTW, there are male and female blossems. By hand pollenating you will have the best chance of growing larger gourds with thick shells because they will have a longer growing season. I should have done that last year because the plants were blooming very late ...

Re: First martins and first tree swallows of the year

My gourds are about 1/3 full and yesterday evening I was down at the pond feeding the fish when all of a sudden there was a huge amount of PMs and TS show up to drink and feed on bugs. Maybe 2 dozen or more PMs and 20+ TS . They moved over to the sky above the gourds feasting and carrying on. Quite ...
