Re: No more gourds for me

The rod mounting system is working really well. I have some big box hdwe store sourced rods and they are way too soft and bend easily (maybe a sign of a predator attack), but the 6061-T6 rods are perfect. I have a dangling 1.5" gourd for a TS, but NEVER will a porch equipped PM gourd be death dangle...

Re: Holy cow!

Is there a pond nearby with a good clear flyway? They love those, especially when it gets hot like it is now.

Re: No more gourds for me

Using the "death dangle" is OK IMO on 2" round hold gourds, but no way should you dangle a porch equipped gourd. 70 MPH winds will turn them sideways. I finished changing over the last 8 gourds yesterday. Now each tee rack has room for 16 or even 20 gourds instead of 8. At some point the PVC rack wi...

Re: No more gourds for me

So I switched 8 more dangling gourds under where the worst carnage was. The other remaining 8 danglers that I put the eggs and babies into are being tended but since I am out of 3' rods they will have to wait. The second set of 8 had what I think are live babies in 3 (one had 7 alive), and the other...

Re: No more gourds for me

This morning I took down 8 gourds that were dangling from a 3" PVC tee rack and had dumped eggs yesterday. I installed 4 ea 3' long, 3/8" dia 6061-T6 AL rods horizontally where the inner 4 gourds were dangling. 4 rods = 8 gourds this way as I put one on each side. I also drilled the 3/8" through hol...

Re: No more gourds for me - North Alabama viewpoint

I use gourds because they like the room and I can grow them (S&K big bo plastic gourds are popular also). But, I learned that you cannot just hang them and let them sway as the wind will blow. Albertro - this evening - We had maybe 60-70 MPH winds with a storm front and the gourds that I hang with c...

Re: dead martin

White Lexal is good stuff. It is what I use to seal the S&K parts onto the natural gourds. You can paint it also.

I put a little Seven in when I pre-nest with pine straw. Seems to work OK.

Re: dead martin

Is the gap between the S&K porches and the entrances a threat? I replace the rivets each year as they get loose and the porch sags. Do I need to start caulking these on to eliminate the gap?

Nest building is in full swing at my place and the live oak they like for leaves is ready.

Re: What time of day do martins look for new Housing?

You should have PMs already if they will be using your site this year, but don't give up. At my place the teenagers are in full swing and there may not be enough available gourds. There may still be homeless birds out there. And the TS are NOT bad for the PMs IMO.

Re: Martin collision

When I find a shocked bird I will cup them in my hand and gently stroke their back with my thumb. It seems to calm them and help get their composure back. Once a bird ran into my PU truck, I picked him up and stroked him while I parked in the drive. He flew away a little while later. Now he is a reg...

Re: OMG !!! I JUST SAW A HAWK TAKE ONE OF MY MARTINS !!!!

I had the same thing the other evening. II chased him away the evening before by shouting but not this time. Surprisingly there wasn't a lot of distress calling going on. I will take care of that hawk if the chance presents itself.

Re: They are coming back ,but now I have no idea how to protect them

I have one of the fast hawks lurking about in the evening. The other eve the damn hawk got an ASY male in flight. I have a shotgun handy now. I have also had to clean out a gourd with course material which signals a starling has voilated the SREH entrances again.

Re: Survival in bad weather

It's been one for the books IMO but we may have made it through here in N Alabama. I had put all the crickets I could source locally into the gourds two nights ago and yesterday evening as I was putting in scrambled eggs I noticed all the crickets were gone except from one gourd. This AM I put in mo...

Re: Supplemental Feeding Frustration !!

I am gonna put scrambled eggs in each gourd this evening and also tomorrow AM. It will frost tonight and there are very few bugs. I mowed all my grass (a bunch) and had hardly any insect., but the hard core resident barnies and TSs were there getting whatever bugs I could stir up. There were also a ...

Re: Concerned

I removed the eggs yesterday. They were cold. This pair of barnies are real pros. I think this is their 3rd year but it may be longer. They had 2 broods last year for 7 total fledglings. This year they widened their nest so they may have big plans. The PMs were pretty active last evening. I don't se...

Re: Tree swallows nesting in my Martin gourds?

What size or type holes are you using? My place is overrun with TS and that's not a bad thing IMO. I would love to use some of the extra gourds I have around to put up for TS, but they never seem to take to a gourd I dangle from a tree. So far I have not observed a TS go into a SREH porch gourd.

Re: Concerned

Well, 3 $10 jars of dried crickets from flukers at petco later... those didn't go very far in 40 gourds. One jar had LIVE INSECTS in it. I hope those gourds have enough seven. There were 3 dead ASY males. Two were recent, probably from last night or the night before. One in the "old neighborhood" of...
