Re: Blue martin

I have some deep blue birds that try to nest in 18" hiway cones on my grass, but they get in and can't get out so I find them dead when I move the cones for mowing. But those are solid blue and I have never seen them except for being dead in my cones. Beautiful bird, no idea what they are. NOT BBs.

Re: Tree swallows

We have tree swallows nesting in bluebird boxes every year. Apparently they’re not very good at picking the right size box, and will nest in almost anything with a hole even if it’s far too small. Some or most of the nestlings may not make it if the box isn’t large enough, so it’s best to make sure...

Watching them swirl before they bed down for the night

And I was thinking about how the weather radar can pick up the birds. That means the radar is powerful enough to hit them and reflect back to be received. Then the new 5G millimeter wave cell technology is coming out. There must be a ton of EM waves out there, probably more the higher you go due to ...

Re: My barnies finally arrived, yippee!

There is more to it cause you have to consider the storm winds. My front porch will get howling winds from the north, so they prefer the northern corner furtherest from the house. The wind is a lot less. I also have an old hangar that they like to hang out in which gets no winds in it even from the ...

So what kind of green leaves do your PMs like?

I have a white oak tree I found in the woods as a 1" treeling 25 yrs ago that has 3 lobes on the leaf tips. They use these over maple and red oaks. Besides, the tree is very handy for them.

Re: My barnies finally arrived, yippee!

Mine nest right in a corner of my front porch. They have about 10" build-up before the roof is too close and they can't feed the kids. I may tear it down this year in a week or two and let them start again, cause it's been 2 seasons on that buid... IF... the one I have hanging out on the nest really...

My barnies finally arrived, yippee!

They had me worried but today had 5 blow through the front porch and mama bird lit on the nest they had last year which may need replacing as it is getting pretty tall. Strange migration this yer with TS 1st, PMs a couple weeks later and only now barnies. Guess they are the smart ones and there are ...

Re: Starlings getting in crescent openings

Starlings are very sneaky birds and here they kind of emulate PMs when gliding toward the gourds. I had one smart and small female have 3 babies in a gourd and didn't catch them until they were close to fledging. The nest and baby occupants spent the next 2 days in the trash can waiting for pickup, ...

Re: Migration for last week of March - Big Days ahead

ASYs have been increasing in number the last two days as the bugs are coming in. I still think this year has been slow to fill so far but the season is young and the teenagers aren't here yet.

Still no barnies for some reason. Not even evening guests or mower-chasers.

The adults are here but in much lower numbers. No barnies yet.

Sad, but nature is resilient.

Re: Running late it seems.

My "fill rate" is terrible this year. Maybe they have wised up to the southern weather and just kept going up into the c old bomb vortex...??? The TS are OK for this nearly, no barnies yet, and the PMs just seem to come and go.

Maybe last year's death dangle disaster has scared them off.

Slow start this year at my palce

It may be the cool nights keeping bugs down, but my PMs are slow to build up the numbers this year. TS are here but the PMs are just not arriving yet.

Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

I think the barnies on my front porch are a returning pair, and the few TS which are back around seem to be paired up also.

No PMs yet but I think it will be any day now, hopefully after the Sat night storms they are calling for. Bring up some bugs please Mr. storm.

Re: Better throw another log on the fire.

I think my PMs have finally gotten smart and are hanging back waiting for better weather. The TS that were here have left and it will get in the teens for the next two nights so no bugs for a while. The other seasonal jays are hiding also. No barnies yet either.

Re: Flea and mite control

I put seven on the pine needles when I pre-nest. It has been a rainy week and maybe the seven is "dead", but so are any bugs that were on the needles I suppose. Seems to work. They build on top and besides the green leaves they put down also are cover. Mine like the white oak nearby BTW.
