Re: How Far Away Should Martin Housing Be From Power Lines?

Hmmm. I have not been thinking about the squirrel. He's never been a problem for us. Thanks for the heads up. You are correct in keeping that potential predator in mind when locating housing. Best wishes to all for a successful season 💜

Re: 4th nest check

It takes me an hour and a half or so. I usually do some, then rest for me and a break for the birds to get back to feeding or egg sitting. It's a big job, but so important. I used to be on a much stricter schedule. Having a helper makes the task easier and Mike is a great helper. If I were you, I wo...

Re: Need help adults dying!

So sorry to hear of your losses. Are you filling the gourds with an adequate amount of nesting material? Do they have internal porches. How sad to think they might just be trapped inside the housing and cannot get out.

4th nest check

And we have the official report from the official counting person (that'd be me). 378 eggs and 52 hatchling/nestling young. So that's 430 ... Add the adults and we are looking at approximately 606 Purple Martins just at my house. Four of my 88 gourds do not have eggs or young yet. They may be claime...

Re: 6th Nest Check - old landlords, check my projections

Great job. I'm been doing this since 1997. Does that make me an old landlord?? I prefer experienced... I have never stopped learning something new. The birds have taught me more than any book ever could. Nest checks and recordkeeping are valuable tools to help you keep your colony safe and you...

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

Oh my goodness! I know you are a great landlord and this is not the work of a snake. It's happening at night (so nocturnal). Your question about a rat climbing the pole. You know that they can, but would they? And would the Martin sit still for the rat to gnaw him to death? No. You have an unusual p...

Re: Why do I not have martins

I have been hosting Purple Martins since 1996. First year was at a duplex where I was renting. Then we bought our land in Alvin and in the spring of 1997 we erected that same house at the new site. Before Mike could get down off the ladder there were Purple Martins circling overhead and they landed ...

3rd nest check

Great news. 222 eggs and 8 young in 53 nests. Still have 35 nests with no eggs. But, they all look promising. Lots of fighting and competition between the Purple Martins. We have not seen a Starling or a House Sparrow for several weeks. The Cooper's hawk visits several times a day, but they have his...

Re: They are hungry.

Just a note to let you know I have ordered 1000 crickets from an online source, frozen them and then tossed as needed to our colony. We don't need to supplement our birds food supply very often, but there have been a few times. Thank you for your efforts to get those early birds through the rough we...

Re: Bluebird question

I agree with snake. I put an e-collar beneath my bb house and have stove pipe baffles on all 11pm poles. No snake problem anymore, but I watch for evidence of them constantly. Used bird netting for a few years, but got tired of cutting snakes out of it all the time. They are out there and will clean...

2nd nest check

4 days since my first look last Tuesday. I found 37 eggs in 11 nests on Tuesday. Today (Saturday) I found 87 eggs and ... Drum roll please... 2 nests have hatched. So, a total of 23 nests today containing eggs or young. I know, I was in disbelief! But, it's true. Teeny weeny pinkies...soooo cute! So...

I found eggs.

Hello everyone. We're still here in Alvin, Texas, and hosting a magnificent colony of 80 something pairs. I just finished my first nest check. Mike teases that I am becoming a slumlord. Maybe just a little. Anyway... I found nests in every one of our 88 gourds and eleven of them had eggs alre...

We just spotted our first returning PM

 We were in the barn. Mike stepped out the door to dump some ice and hollered at me, "come here, quick!" I ran to see and there he was. A lone ASY male quietly sneaking into his gourd for the night. Time was 5:56. He made no sound as he made one swooping pass then dove into a gourd. Let the se...

Re: You know you're a PM Nut when.....

You get all excited about a bunch of birds and their babies. I found my first hatchling today. I am kicking myself for not doing a complete nest check 2 weeks ago. I have no irritating chee chee House Sparrows, but I have a Starling nest that contained 2 big blue eggs. This psycho grabbed the gun an...

Re: First two eggs pecked on the ground

I am totally unfamiliar with Wrens. The Starling, House Sparrow and sub-adult Martins have always been our culprits. SREH stopped the Starling, pellets stopped the HS and subbies are tolerated. Keeping the nest competitors out of your PM housing will allow your colony to grow and eventually the colo...
