Re: Advice for Adding House to Gourd Setup?

The T-14s are nice houses. I thought about putting up one here for awhile. But they will require maintenance and I don't have time for that, along with my full-time job. The other thing I didn't like about the T14s is one door will open multiple cavities at once. And if you have ready-to-fledge nest...

Re: Racoon attack - can I move some babies?

Make sure your predator guards are properly sized & mounted, or the raccoons will be back:

Do mites only appear on the exterior of gourds when it’s hot and sunny or would they also be seen when it’s 85 and cloudy?

RR- I would ask for the owner's contact information, call him & ask if you could take the housing down for him @ no charge - (use whatever excuse - you want to use them for a public project you're working on, etc., etc. - ((that would be true, right??  ). Re: Supplemental feeding with superworms

Hi Kathy. Perhaps she was referring to their role in rehabilitation of a sick or dying bird. There would be much better sources of nutrition for that. But for sustaining health mealworms may be perfectly fine. If they have no nutritional value then I am not sure what is keeping all our Martins aliv...

Re: Supplemental feeding with superworms

I just tried out this place last week, and I'm thrilled with them. Not only were their zophobas cheaper than other places, (I order 1000), but you can get cheaper options for shipping. So, I spent around $25 for them, and the other sites I would have spent almost $50. http://www.rainbowmealworms.net/

Re: Supplemental feeding with superworms

Thank you for your replies. Kathy, does that mean that any insect that is frozen has no value? I have been buying crickets and super worms and putting them in the freezer and using as needed. I have gone through way more than I thought I would but it is so fun to feed them!!! I have been thawing th...

Re: Supplemental feeding with superworms

Doug, when our long lost bird rehabber, Penny Casey-Halstead was helping out a lot on these forums, she addressed the topic of freeze-dried mealworms and said they are zero nutritional value once they are freeze-dried and very, very difficult to rehydrate. So, in my opinion, they may offer some 'fib...

Re: Missouri Purple Martins - A Mid-season Update

Hey flyin - my evolution with Sevin dust - I started out with just cardboard squares sprayed with liquid Sevin dust and shoved under all the nests. Well, that didn't last long. After a while, I found out Sevin dust doesn't really work after it becomes wet and it can get really wet here in Missouri i...

Missouri Purple Martins - A Mid-season Update

Even though the heat is sometimes unbearable here in Missouri, I still try to push through with the nest changes. The martins' timing this year meant that I had a total of 57 nest changes that all came due this week. I ended up changing 63 nests as I worked through them. Thank goodness my back survi...

Re: GHO attack

Yes, my cages go up & down with the gourds. Mostly because I needed to be able to lower my racks at night if storms were coming and I didn't want to leave my gourds exposed all night for the owl. You will need to space the cages out far enough that the owl can't reach the porches. That also leaves e...

Time to close the bottom of the Owl guard cages

This Great Horned Owl just won't give up. We have tons of rabbits and other wildlife here and she is just hyper-focused on my martins. This year, she has learned how to get up inside the cages, so now I've had to close the bottom off. But I'm having to strike a balance between keeping the bottom ope...

Re: GHO attack

Hi, Once an owl has eaten martins at your colony, they are very hard to discourage with any scare tactics. You will need physical barriers now. I've blogged about the cages I've had to build here to deter my GHO. If you have any questions, please let me know! Here's the link to the one I built on th...

Do you have predator guards on your poles? Make sure your poles are protected against any climbing predators like snakes and raccoons.
