Missouri Purple Martins - A Mid-season Update

Even though the heat is sometimes unbearable here in Missouri, I still try to push through with the nest changes. The martins' timing this year meant that I had a total of 57 nest changes that all came due this week. I ended up changing 63 nests as I worked through them. Thank goodness my back survi...

Re: Time to close the bottom of the Owl guard cages

You come up with some really great ideas Kathy, including this latest one. Your blog is awesome! Your Martins are extremely fortunate to have you caring for them! Thank you for your kind words, Matt. My ideas are born out of desperation and lots & lots of wine. I don't think I've ever encount...

Re: GHO attack

Yes, my cages go up & down with the gourds. Mostly because I needed to be able to lower my racks at night if storms were coming and I didn't want to leave my gourds exposed all night for the owl. You will need to space the cages out far enough that the owl can't reach the porches. That also leaves e...

Time to close the bottom of the Owl guard cages

This Great Horned Owl just won't give up. We have tons of rabbits and other wildlife here and she is just hyper-focused on my martins. This year, she has learned how to get up inside the cages, so now I've had to close the bottom off. But I'm having to strike a balance between keeping the bottom ope...

Re: GHO attack

Hi, Once an owl has eaten martins at your colony, they are very hard to discourage with any scare tactics. You will need physical barriers now. I've blogged about the cages I've had to build here to deter my GHO. If you have any questions, please let me know! Here's the link to the one I built on th...

Do you have predator guards on your poles? Make sure your poles are protected against any climbing predators like snakes and raccoons.

Re: Barred or Great Horned Owl?

Once an owl has eaten at your colony, it has a 'learned' behavior. No matter what type of gourd or house you have, you won't stop him now, until you put up a physical blockade. Nite guard lights, etc, won't stop him. I've been dealing with a Great Horned Owl now for more than 5 years. Here are some ...

Re: Hawk attack

I've been going through the same thing for a month . Like clock work the hawk would come in just before dark. The martins would'nt even see the hawk most times . My loud clapping would disrupt the hawk attacks . I did loose one bird when my pet chicken distracted me one evening . I have since used ...

Re: Hawk attack

Setup a couple of bird feeders on either side of your gourd rack, put up some decoys and as Larry mentioned cages protect them when they're sitting on porches.
Check out my latest blog post for how I setup these things too.

Missouri Sunsets, Spring and Purple Martins-over 100 here now

I now have more than 20 'winged orcas' (a very appropriate description for my tree swallows - thanks, Trudy Adams) providing sentry duty and watching for hawks here in south central Missouri. Since the weather has warmed, I've been trying to get a rough idea of how many martins have arrived and righ...

Re: SUBBIES ARRIVE IN NEW CONCORD,OHIO RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

there are a bunch of adults with the subbies this year that is different I need to get my binoculars and scan my colony. I thought I saw a sub-adult last night, but I dismissed it as the sun was setting and I thought the low light was playing tricks on me. That would explain why they were so loud l...

Dick....."150 subbies"? Hmmmm.... Are you sure? Have you seen a male subbie doing the male mating call (with the clicking at the end?). I haven't seen any sub-adults here, but maybe I should go look again.

Re: Can hawks make purple martins shun a house they used for years?

I always get a little ticked when I drive by someone's place and see a martin house pole's without predator guards on it !! Snakes and predators do their dirty work after dark so be assured you're losing eggs and birds. I learned this as a kid living on a farm snakes would eat all our chickens egg'...

Re: Hypothetical on returning Martins

here's a thought on that. i read somewhere (forum or in the book, "a purple martin journey") that according to banding studies, most martins change mates regularly. most animal species exhibiting sexual dimorphism (males looking different than females) will not mate for life. each year the survivin...

Hi Kathty,i was wondering if you had any idea the number of birds you had last year at this time? Hey Lynn, Last year - 25-30 around the same timeframe.. I pulled out all my logs and listed my whole 12 year running history here, because I was curious about the same thing. http://kathyfreeze.blogspo...
