Re: Standing on the shoulders of those before us

This is a great topic, Ed! I've spent a lot of my time and $$$ here in Missouri, mentoring many, many new landlords and helping existing landlords improve their sites. I have a list of 78 'mentees' now. My analysis may be anecdotal, but from what I'm reading here, I think it's a good bet that this i...

loco,
Do you freeze your superworms first, before you flip them, or do you just flip them out there live?

Purple Martins at Port Wilson Lighthouse, Port Townsend, Washington

I just returned from our vacation to Washington state, touring the lighthouses along the coast, whale watching, etc. While there, I was delighted to hear a familiar sound. I even ranked this sighting right up there with being able to see humpback whales and Orcas. How weird am I? http://kathyfreeze....

An Interesting Perspective on Fledging in South Central Missouri

We have had such a great purple martin season! We have not spotted the Great Horned Owl on any of the cameras and there has not been any evidence of any nightly raids in 40 nights now! What has happened to my GHO - whether she's dead, or scared away by all the tricks I've used this year, she's found...

Re: Season Two of the PMCA's Nest Cam is now live!

How 'bout that fight that broke out in the nest when an intruder entered yesterday . . . maybe some of the pros can tell us newbies - was the intruder a female (as one commenter opines) or a young male PM (which fits with their reputation). No wonder it is so difficult to tell them apart . . . even...

Re: Calcium, calcium, calcium

Hey everyone, Just an obvious reminder to the seasoned martin landlords, but especially to the newbie landlords to put out crushed egg shells and crushed oyster shells for the martins. I place my eggs and oyster shells on a raised platform for my martins. The calcium from the eggs and oyster shells...

Re: I need sparrow advice

I can't get the "hold" on the springers right. But I can nail a sparrow with my RWS 850 air rifle at 75 -100 also. And I can trap like a wild woman. 8) Oh - and don't laugh - that's 75 to 100 FEET  Anything over that and the English House sparrow / starling is LOL'ing at me.

Re: When a Great Horned Owl attacks the Cage

Kathy, Thanks for posting the video. It is a real reminder of what goes on in the middle of the night. I have cages up on all my racks now and my worry level has went way down. I also have a camera system on my racks but haven't seen anything yet like you had. Thanks again for your help and insight...

Re: When a Great Horned Owl attacks the Cage

Hi Cathy, For those with an owl cage, it may be a good idea to add a solid floor below the cage because owls will and do enter from below. Hi Dave, I've been worried that she may figure that out some day, but so far, she hasn't. One of the concerns about adding any protection under the gourd rack i...

When a Great Horned Owl attacks the Cage

...in this case, she flies away, empty "handed". This was the last time for which I have video of the Great Horned Owl attacking my colony - back on 5/23. The cages won't STOP an attack, but they will PREVENT the owl from being as successful as she normally would, without the cages. One ma...

Colony Chatter Blog Post: Time to Peek Inside!

The next post for the PMCA blog is up! The Purple martin nest is a mysterious mix of twigs, grass, some odds & ends and finally green leaves. Nest checks help us keep track of how the martins are doing and we can quickly identify any problems. Enjoy the next PMCA blog post here: [url] https://ww...
